1 Mose 42
1 Als nun Jakob erfuhr, daß in Ägypten Getreide zu haben sei, sagte er zu seinen Söhnen: »Was seht ihr euch lange an?«
Now Jacob [Supplanter] saw that there was grain in Egypt [Abode of slavery], and Jacob [Supplanter] said to his sons, “Why do you look at one another?”
2 Dann fuhr er fort: »Wisset wohl: ich habe gehört, daß in Ägypten Getreide zu haben ist; zieht hinab und kauft uns dort Getreide, damit wir zu leben haben und nicht verhungern!«
He said, “Behold, I have sh'ma ·heard obeyed· that there is grain in Egypt [Abode of slavery]. Go down there, and buy for us from there, so that we may live, and not die.”
3 So machten sich denn zehn von den Brüdern Josephs auf den Weg, um Getreide in Ägypten zu kaufen;
Joseph [May he add]’s ten brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt [Abode of slavery].
4 Benjamin aber, den Vollbruder Josephs, ließ Jakob nicht mit seinen Brüdern ziehen; denn er fürchtete, es könne ihm ein Unfall zustoßen.
But Jacob [Supplanter] didn’t send Benjamin [Son of right hand, Son of south], Joseph [May he add]’s brother, with his brothers; for he said, “Lest perhaps harm happen to him.”
5 So kamen denn die Söhne Israels, um Getreide zu kaufen wie andere Leute, die auch hinzogen; denn es herrschte Hungersnot im Lande Kanaan.
The sons of Israel [God prevails] came to buy among those who came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan [Humbled].
6 Nun war Joseph der Gebieter im Lande; er war es, der allem Volk im Lande das Getreide verkaufte. Als nun die Brüder Josephs zu ihm kamen, verneigten sie sich vor ihm mit dem Angesicht bis zur Erde.
Joseph [May he add] was the governor over the land. It was he who sold to all the people of the land. Joseph [May he add]’s brothers came, and bowed themselves down to him with their faces to the earth.
7 Sobald Joseph seine Brüder sah, erkannte er sie, gab sich ihnen aber nicht zu erkennen, sondern redete sie hart an und fragte sie: »Woher seid ihr gekommen?« Sie antworteten: »Aus dem Lande Kanaan, um Lebensmittel zu kaufen.«
Joseph [May he add] saw his brothers, and he recognized them, but acted like a stranger to them, and spoke roughly with them. He said to them, “Where did you come from?” They said, “From the land of Canaan [Humbled] to buy food.”
8 Wiewohl Joseph nun seine Brüder erkannt hatte, erkannten sie ihn doch nicht.
Joseph [May he add] recognized his brothers, but they didn’t recognize him.
9 Da mußte Joseph an die Träume denken, die er einst in bezug auf sie geträumt hatte, und er sagte zu ihnen: »Kundschafter seid ihr! Ihr seid nur hergekommen, um zu erspähen, wo das Land offen steht!«
Joseph [May he add] remembered the dreams which he dreamed about them, and said to them, “You are spies! You have come to see the nakedness of the land.”
10 Sie antworteten ihm: »O nein, Herr! Deine Knechte sind gekommen, um Lebensmittel zu kaufen.
They said to him, “No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food.
11 Wir alle sind Söhne eines Mannes, ehrliche Leute sind wir, deine Knechte sind keine Kundschafter!«
We are all one man’s sons; we are honest men. Your servants are not spies.”
12 Doch er antwortete ihnen: »Nein, sondern ihr seid hergekommen, um zu erkunden, wo das Land offen steht!«
He said to them, “No, but you have come to see the nakedness of the land!”
13 Sie erwiderten: »Wir, deine Knechte, sind zwölf Brüder, die Söhne eines Mannes im Lande Kanaan; der jüngste ist allerdings augenblicklich bei unserm Vater, und der eine ist nicht mehr da.«
They said, “We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan [Humbled]; and behold, the youngest is today with our father, and one is no more.”
14 Aber Joseph entgegnete ihnen: »Es ist doch so, wie ich euch gesagt habe: ihr seid Kundschafter!
Joseph [May he add] said to them, “It is like I told you, saying, ‘You are spies!’
15 Daran sollt ihr geprüft werden: Beim Leben des Pharaos: ihr sollt von hier nicht weggehen, wenn euer jüngster Bruder nicht hierher kommt.
By this you shall be tested. By the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go out from here, unless your youngest brother comes here.
16 Schickt einen von euch hin, daß er euren Bruder hole! Ihr anderen aber bleibt so lange gefangen, bis eure Aussagen geprüft sind, ob ihr mit der Wahrheit umgeht oder nicht! So wahr der Pharao lebt: ihr seid Kundschafter!«
Send one of you, and let him get your brother, and you shall be bound, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you, or else by the life of Pharaoh surely you are spies.”
17 Hierauf ließ er sie beisammen drei Tage lang in Gewahrsam nehmen.
He put them all together into custody for three days.
18 Am dritten Tage aber sagte Joseph zu ihnen: »Wollt ihr am Leben bleiben, so müßt ihr es folgendermaßen machen; denn ich bin ein gottesfürchtiger Mann.
Joseph [May he add] said to them the third day, “Do this, and live, for I fear God.
19 Wenn ihr ehrliche Leute seid, so soll nur einer von euch Brüdern als Gefangener hier in eurem bisherigen Gewahrsam zurückbleiben; ihr anderen aber mögt hinziehen und Getreide für den Bedarf eurer Familien mitnehmen!
If you are honest men, then let one of your brothers be bound in your prison; but you go, carry grain for the famine of your houses.
20 Aber euren jüngsten Bruder müßt ihr zu mir herbringen; dann sollen eure Aussagen als wahr gelten, und ihr braucht nicht zu sterben!« Sie gingen darauf ein,
Bring your youngest brother to me; so will your words be verified, and you won’t die.” They did so.
21 sagten aber einer zum andern: »Wahrlich, das haben wir an unserm Bruder verschuldet! Denn wir sahen seine Seelenangst, als er uns anflehte, aber wir hörten nicht auf ihn; deshalb ist jetzt dieses Unglück über uns gekommen!«
They said to one another, “We are certainly guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us, and we wouldn’t sh'ma ·hear obey·. Therefore this distress has come upon us.”
22 Da antwortete ihnen Ruben: »Habe ich euch damals nicht gesagt: ›Versündigt euch nicht an dem Knaben!‹, aber ihr wolltet nicht hören; so wird denn jetzt auch sein Blut von uns gefordert!«
Reuben [See, a son!] answered them, saying, “Didn’t I tell you, saying, ‘Don’t sin ·err (the standard goal)· against the child,’ and you wouldn’t sh'ma ·hear obey·? Therefore also, behold, his blood is required.”
23 Sie wußten aber nicht, daß Joseph sie verstand; denn er verhandelte mit ihnen durch einen Dolmetscher.
They didn’t know that Joseph [May he add] sh'ma ·hear understand obey· them; for there was an interpreter between them.
24 Da wandte er sich von ihnen ab und weinte. Als er dann wieder zu ihnen zurückgekehrt war und mit ihnen gesprochen hatte, ließ er Simeon aus ihrer Mitte ergreifen und vor ihren Augen in Fesseln legen.
He turned himself away from them, and wept. Then he returned to them, and spoke to them, and took Simeon [Hearing] from among them, and bound him before their eyes.
25 Dann gab Joseph Befehl, man solle ihre Säcke mit Getreide füllen, ihr Geld aber einem jeden wieder in seinen Sack legen und ihnen auch Zehrung für den Weg mitgeben. Als das geschehen war,
Then Joseph [May he add] gave an enjoinment to fill their bags with grain, and to restore each man’s money into his sack, and to give them food for the way. So it was done to them.
26 luden sie ihr Getreide auf ihre Esel und zogen von dannen.
They loaded their donkeys with their grain, and departed from there.
27 Als aber einer von ihnen in der Herberge seinen Sack öffnete, um seinem Esel Futter zu geben, bemerkte er sein Geld, das in seinem Sack obenauf lag.
As one of them opened his sack to give his donkey food in the lodging place, he saw his money. Behold, it was in the mouth of his sack.
28 Da sagte er zu seinen Brüdern: »Mein Geld ist wieder da! Denkt euch nur: es liegt hier in meinem Sack!« Da entfiel ihnen der Mut; sie sahen einander erschrocken an und riefen aus: »Was hat Gott uns da angetan!«
He said to his brothers, “My money is restored! Behold, it is in my sack!” Their hearts failed them, and they turned trembling to one another, saying, “What is this that God has done to us?”
29 Als sie hierauf zu ihrem Vater Jakob ins Land Kanaan zurückkamen, erzählten sie ihm alles, was sie erlebt hatten, mit den Worten:
They came to Jacob [Supplanter] their father, to the land of Canaan [Humbled], and told him all that had happened to them, saying,
30 »Der Mann, der im Lande Herr ist, hat uns hart angelassen und uns wie Leute behandelt, die das Land auskundschaften wollten;
“The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly with us, and took us for spies of the country.
31 und als wir zu ihm sagten: ›Wir sind ehrliche Leute, wir sind nie Kundschafter gewesen;
We said to him, ‘We are honest men. We are no spies.
32 zwölf Brüder sind wir, die Söhne unsers Vaters; der eine ist nicht mehr da, und der jüngste befindet sich zur Zeit bei unserm Vater im Lande Kanaan‹, –
We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no more, and the youngest is today with our father in the land of Canaan [Humbled].’
33 da erwiderte uns der Mann, der im Lande Herr ist: ›Daran will ich erkennen, ob ihr ehrliche Leute seid: laßt einen von euch Brüdern bei mir zurück und nehmt den Bedarf für eure hungernden Familien mit und kehrt heim;
The man, the lord of the land, said to us, ‘By this I will know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me, and take grain for the famine of your houses, and go your way.
34 bringt dann aber euren jüngsten Bruder zu mir! Daran werde ich erkennen, daß ihr keine Kundschafter, sondern ehrliche Leute seid; dann will ich euch auch euren Bruder zurückgeben, und ihr könnt im Lande frei verkehren.‹«
Bring your youngest brother to me. Then I will know that you are not spies, but that you are honest men. So I will deliver your brother to you, and you shall trade in the land.’”
35 Als sie dann ihre Säcke leerten, fand jeder seinen Geldbeutel in seinem Sack; und als sie samt ihrem Vater sahen, daß es ihre Beutel waren, erschraken sie.
As they emptied their sacks, behold, each man’s bundle of money was in his sack. When they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid.
36 Da sagte ihr Vater Jakob zu ihnen: »Ihr beraubt mich meiner Kinder! Joseph ist nicht mehr da, Simeon ist nicht mehr da, und nun sollt ihr Benjamin holen! Über mich ist all dieses Leid hereingebrochen!«
Jacob [Supplanter], their father, said to them, “You have bereaved me of my children! Joseph [May he add] is no more, Simeon [Hearing] is no more, and you want to take Benjamin [Son of right hand, Son of south] away. All these things are against me.”
37 Da antwortete Ruben seinem Vater: »Meine beiden Söhne magst du töten, wenn ich ihn nicht zu dir zurückbringe! Vertraue ihn mir an: ich bringe ihn zu dir zurück!«
Reuben [See, a son!] spoke to his father, saying, “Kill my two sons, if I don’t bring him to you. Entrust him to my care, and I will bring him to you again.”
38 Doch Jakob entgegnete: »Mein Sohn soll nicht mit euch hinabziehen! Sein rechter Bruder ist tot, und er ist allein übriggeblieben; wenn ihm ein Unfall auf dem Wege zustieße, den ihr ziehen müßt, so würdet ihr mein graues Haar mit Herzeleid in die Unterwelt bringen!« (Sheol h7585)
He said, “My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he only is left. If harm happens to him along the way in which you go, then you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol ·Place of the dead·.” (Sheol h7585)
