Esra 4

1 Als aber die Widersacher Judas und Benjamins vernahmen, daß die aus der Verbannung Zurückgekehrten dabei waren, dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, einen Tempel zu bauen,

Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the exile were building the temple unto the Lord the God of Israel:

2 begaben sie sich zu Serubbabel und den Familienhäuptern und sagten zu ihnen: »Wir möchten zusammen mit euch bauen; denn wir verehren euren Gott ebenso wie ihr und wir opfern ihm seit der Zeit des Assyrerkönigs Assarhaddon, der uns hierhergebracht (hier angesiedelt) hat.«

Then came they near to Zerubbabel, and to the chiefs of the divisions, and said unto them, Let us build with you; for like you will we seek your God; and unto him do we sacrifice since the days of Essar-chaddon the king of Asshur, who hath brought us up hither.

3 Aber Serubbabel und Jesua und die übrigen Familienhäupter der Israeliten antworteten ihnen: »Es geht nicht an, daß ihr und wir zusammen unserm Gott einen Tempel bauen, sondern wir wollen allein dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, (einen Tempel) bauen, wie der König Kores, der König von Persien, uns geboten hat.«

But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua', and the rest of the of the divisions of Israel, said unto them, It is not obligatory on you and on us to build a house unto our God; but we ourselves together must build unto the Lord the God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.

4 Da suchte die Bevölkerung des Landes dem jüdischen Volke Schwierigkeiten für sein Unternehmen zu schaffen und sie vom Bauen abzuschrecken;

Then did the people of the land weaken the hands of the people of Judah, and frightened them off from building;

5 auch gewannen sie durch Bestechung einflußreiche Männer (vom persischen Hofe) gegen sie, um ihr Vorhaben zu hintertreiben, solange der König Kores von Persien lebte und bis zur Regierung des Perserkönigs Darius.

And they hired against them counsellors, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus the king of Persia, and even until the reign of Darius the king of Persia.

6 Als aber Ahasveros zur Herrschaft gekommen war, verfaßten sie zu Anfang seiner Regierung eine Anklageschrift gegen die Bewohner von Juda und Jerusalem;

And in the reign of Achashverosh, in the beginning of his reign they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

7 und unter der Regierung Arthasasthas richteten Bislam, Mithredath, Tabeel und alle seine Genossen an Arthasastha, den König von Persien, einen Bericht, der mit aramäischer Schrift geschrieben und ins Aramäische übersetzt war.

And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes the king of Persia: and the writing of the letter was written in Aramic, and interpreted in Aramic.

8 Der Statthalter Rehum und der Staatsschreiber Simsai verfaßten einen Bericht an den König Arthasastha gegen Jerusalem mit folgendem Wortlaut:

Rechum the counsellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a certain letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king, as followeth:

9 Der Statthalter Rehum und der Staatsschreiber Simsai und alle ihre Genossen, die Dinäer [und Apharsathchäer], die Tarpeläer, Apharsachäer, Arkewäer, Babylonier, Susaniter, Dehiter und Elamiter

Then [wrote] Rechum the counsellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions, from Din, and Apharsathach, Tarpel, Apharass, Erech, Babylon, Shushan, Dehav, and 'Elam,

10 und alle übrigen Völkerschaften, die der große und erlauchte Osnappar weggeführt und in den Ortschaften Samarias und in den übrigen Gebieten jenseits des Euphrats angesiedelt hat, und so weiter: –

And the rest of the nations whom the great and honored Assnapper had brought into exile, and settled in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and so forth.

11 dies ist die Abschrift des Berichts, den sie an ihn sandten: »An den König Arthasastha: Deine Knechte, die Männer jenseits des Euphrats und so weiter.

This is the copy of the letter which they sent unto him, even unto king Artaxerxes: Thy servants the men on this side the river, and so forth.

12 Es sei dem König zu wissen getan, daß die Juden, die von dir zu uns heraufgezogen (und) nach Jerusalem gekommen sind, die aufrührerische und böse Stadt wieder aufbauen und ihre Mauern wieder herstellen und die Grundlagen ausbessern.

Be it made known unto the king, that the Jews who removed away from thee are come up to us unto Jerusalem: they are building the rebellious and the bad city, and are completing the walls, and are joining together the foundations.

13 Darum sei dem Könige kundgetan, daß, wenn diese Stadt wieder aufgebaut wird und deren Mauern wiederhergestellt werden, sie keine Abgaben, keine Steuern und Zölle mehr entrichten werden, so daß schließlich das Königshaus Schaden davon haben wird.

Be it now known unto the king, that, if this city be rebuilt, and the walls be completed, they will not give tax, tribute, and toll, and the royal revenues will suffer damage.

14 Weil wir nun in Amt und Sold des königlichen Hofes stehen und es uns nicht geziemt, eine Schädigung des Königs ruhig mitanzusehen, deswegen senden wir diesen Bericht an den König,

Now because we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not proper for us to see the king's dishonor, therefore have we sent and let the king know this:

15 damit man im Buche der Denkwürdigkeiten deiner Väter nachforsche. Du wirst dann im Buche der Denkwürdigkeiten finden und dich überzeugen, daß diese Stadt eine aufrührerische und für die Könige und Länder unheilvolle Stadt gewesen ist und daß seit den ältesten Zeiten Empörungen in ihr stattgefunden haben, weshalb diese Stadt ja auch zerstört worden ist.

That search may be made in the book of the memorable events of thy fathers, and thou wilt find in the book of the memorable events, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have practised sedition within the same from the most ancient time; for which cause this city was destroyed.

16 Wir machen also den König darauf aufmerksam, daß, wenn diese Stadt wieder aufgebaut wird und ihre Mauern wiederhergestellt werden, du infolgedessen nicht im Besitz der Länder jenseits des Euphrats verbleiben wirst.«

We let the king know that, if this city be rebuilt, and its walls be completed, by this means thou wilt have no more any portion on this side of the river.

17 Da sandte der König folgende Antwort: »An den Statthalter Rehum und den Staatsschreiber Simsai und alle ihre Genossen, die in Samaria und den übrigen Gegenden jenseits des Euphrats ansässig sind: »Gruß euch! und so weiter.

Then sent the king a reply unto Rechum the counsellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest of those beyond the river, Peace, and so forth.

18 Das Schreiben, das ihr uns habt zugehen lassen, ist mir Wort für Wort vorgelesen worden;

The letter which ye have sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.

19 und nachdem Befehl von mir erteilt worden war, nachzuforschen, hat es sich herausgestellt, daß die betreffende Stadt sich seit den ältesten Zeiten gegen die Könige aufgelehnt hat und daß Aufruhr und Empörungen in ihr angestiftet worden sind.

And an order was given by me, and search was made, and it was found that this city from the most ancient time hath lifted itself up against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been practised therein.

20 Auch haben mächtige Könige in Jerusalem regiert und über alle Länder jenseits des Euphrats geherrscht, und Abgaben, Steuern und Zölle sind ihnen entrichtet worden.

And that mighty kings have been over Jerusalem, who ruled over all the countries beyond the river; and that tax, tribute, and toll was given unto them.

21 So erlaßt nun den Befehl, daß jenen Männern der Wiederaufbau ihrer Stadt untersagt werde, bis von mir die Erlaubnis dazu erteilt wird;

Now give ye the order to stop these men, and this city shall not be built, until the order be given from me.

22 und seid auf der Hut, eine Nachlässigkeit in dieser Sache vorkommen zu lassen, damit nicht große Schädigung zum Nachteil des Königshauses daraus erwächst!«

Take heed now that ye commit no error in this: that not any injury may grow [out of this] to the damage of the kings.

23 Sobald hierauf die Abschrift des Erlasses des Königs Arthasastha vor Rehum und dem Staatsschreiber Simsai und ihren Genossen verlesen worden war, begaben sie sich eiligst nach Jerusalem zu den Juden und zwangen sie unter rücksichtsloser Anwendung von Gewalt zur Einstellung des Baues.

Thereupon so soon as the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rechum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they did go up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and stopped them by force and power.

24 Damals hörte die Arbeit am Hause Gottes in Jerusalem auf und blieb eingestellt bis zum zweiten Regierungsjahr des Königs Darius von Persien.

Then was stopped the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem, and it remained interrupted until the second year of the reign of Darius the king of Persia.
