Hesekiel 18
1 Weiter erging das Wort des HERRN an mich folgendermaßen:
Yahweh gave me another message. [He said, ]
2 »Wie kommt ihr dazu, im Lande Israel diesen Spruch im Munde zu führen, daß ihr sagt: ›Die Väter haben saure Trauben gegessen, und den Söhnen werden die Zähne stumpf davon‹?
“You people quote [RHQ] this proverb [and say that it is] about Israel: ‘Parents/People eat sour grapes, but it is their children who have a very sour taste in their mouths', [which means that you think that it is not fair for you to be punished for your ancestors’ sins].
3 So wahr ich lebe!« – so lautet der Ausspruch Gottes des HERRN –: »ihr sollt fortan diesen Spruch in Israel nicht mehr im Munde führen!
But [I], Yahweh the Lord, declare that [as surely] as I am alive, you Israeli people will no longer quote that proverb.
4 Bedenkt wohl: alle Seelen gehören mir, die Seele des Vaters so gut wie die des Sohnes – beide gehören mir: die Seele, die da sündigt, die soll sterben!«
Everyone [who is alive] belongs to me. That includes children and their parents; they all belong to me. And it is those who sin who will [because of their sins].
5 »Wenn also jemand gerecht ist und Recht und Gerechtigkeit übt,
[So, ] suppose there is a righteous person [always] does what is fair and right [DOU].
6 an den Opfermahlen auf den Bergen nicht teilnimmt und seine Augen nicht zu den Götzen des Hauses Israel erhebt, das Weib seines Nächsten nicht entehrt und einem Weibe zur Zeit ihrer Unreinheit nicht naht,
He does not [meat sacrificed to idols] on the hilltops, he does not request help from idols. He does not have sex with someone else’s wife or have sex with a woman during her monthly menstrual period.
7 niemanden übervorteilt, dem Schuldner sein Pfand zurückgibt, sich keine Erpressung zuschulden kommen läßt, dem Hungrigen von seinem Brot abgibt und den Nackten mit Kleidung versieht,
He does not mistreat/oppress people; if [borrows money from him and gives him his cloak to guarantee that he will pay the money back], he always gives the cloak back to that [before the sun goes down]. He does not rob people. He gives food to hungry people. He gives clothing to people who need clothes.
8 kein Geld auf Wucher ausleiht und keine Zinsen nimmt, seine Hand vom Unrecht fernhält, in Streitsachen zwischen den Parteien der Wahrheit gemäß richtet,
When he lends money to people, he does not [do it just to] charge big interest. He does not do [SYN] things that are evil. He [always] decides things fairly.
9 nach meinen Satzungen wandelt und meine Gebote beobachtet, indem er sie getreulich erfüllt: der ist ein gerechter Mann, er soll gewißlich am Leben bleiben!« – so lautet der Ausspruch Gottes des HERRN.
He faithfully obeys all [DOU] my laws. That man is truly righteous; he will remain alive. [That is what I, ] Yahweh the Lord, promise.
10 »Ist er nun aber Vater eines gewalttätigen Sohnes, der Blut vergießt und eine von jenen Sünden begeht –
But suppose that man has a son who acts violently, who murders people and does any of these other things, even though his father has not done any of them:
11 während jener dies alles nicht getan hat –, wenn er sogar an den Opfermahlen auf den Bergen teilnimmt und das Weib seines Nächsten entehrt,
He [meat sacrificed to idols] on the hilltops. He has sex with other people’s wives.
12 den Armen und Notleidenden übervorteilt, Erpressung verübt, Gepfändetes nicht zurückgibt und seine Augen zu den Götzen erhebt, Abscheuliches begeht,
He mistreats/oppresses poor and needy people. He robs people. If someone gives him his cloak to [that he will pay the money back], he never gives the cloak back to [before the sun goes down]. He seeks help from idols. He does [other] detestable things.
13 Geld auf Wucher ausleiht und Zinsen nimmt: sollte ein solcher Mensch am Leben bleiben? Nein, er soll nicht am Leben bleiben! Weil er alle diese Abscheulichkeiten verübt hat, soll er unfehlbar den Tod erleiden: die Strafe für seine Blutschuld soll ihn treffen!«
When he lends money, he [very big] interest. If you think that such a person [be allowed to] remain alive [RHQ], you are certainly wrong. Because he has done those detestable things, he will surely be executed, and it will be his own fault [IDM].
14 »Wenn der nun aber Vater eines Sohnes ist, der alle Sünden sieht, die sein Vater begeht, und, obgleich er sie sieht, dennoch nicht ebenso handelt:
But suppose that man has a son who sees all the sins that his father commits, but he does not do those things:
15 er nimmt nicht teil an den Opfermahlen auf den Bergen und erhebt seine Augen nicht zu den Götzen des Hauses Israel, er entehrt nicht das Weib seines Nächsten
He does not [meat sacrificed to idols] on the hilltops. He does not request help from idols. He does not have sex with other people’s wives.
16 und übervorteilt niemand, er läßt sich kein Pfand geben und verübt keine Erpressung, er gibt dem Hungrigen von seinem Brot ab und versieht den Nackten mit Kleidung,
He does not mistreat/oppress people. If he lends money to someone, he does not require that person to give him his cloak to guarantee that he will pay the money back. He does not rob anyone. He gives food to those who need it. He gives clothes to those who need clothes.
17 er hält seine Hand vom Unrecht fern, leiht kein Geld auf Wucher aus und nimmt keine Zinsen, er beobachtet meine Satzungen und wandelt nach meinen Geboten: der soll wegen der Verschuldung seines Vaters nicht sterben, sondern sicherlich am Leben bleiben.
He does not commit sins, [like his father did], and does not charge big interest [DOU] when he lends money. He faithfully obeys [all] [DOU] my laws. That person will not be executed for his father’s sins; he will surely remain alive.
18 Sein Vater aber, der Bedrückung verübt und Erpressung am Bruder begangen und inmitten seiner Volksgenossen nicht gut gehandelt hat: fürwahr, der soll wegen seiner Verschuldung sterben!
But his father will be executed for the sins that he committed, because he cheated people and robbed people and did [other] things that are evil.
19 Wenn ihr aber fragt: ›Warum soll der Sohn die Schuld seines Vaters nicht mittragen?‹, so bedenkt wohl: Der Sohn hat doch Recht und Gerechtigkeit geübt, hat alle meine Satzungen beobachtet und nach ihnen gehandelt: darum soll er am Leben bleiben!
[If] you ask, ‘Why should the [man’s] son not (suffer/be punished) for the evil things that his father did?’, [I will answer that] the son has done what is fair and right [DOU] and has obeyed all my laws, so he will surely remain alive.
20 Ein jeder, der Sünde tut, der soll sterben; aber der Sohn soll die Schuld seines Vaters nicht mittragen und der Vater nicht die Schuld seines Sohnes; nein, dem Gerechten soll der Lohn für seine Gerechtigkeit zuteil werden und ebenso dem Gottlosen die Strafe für seine Gottlosigkeit!«
It is those who sin who will [because of their sins]. People will not be punished for the sins of their parents, or for the sins of their children. Good/Righteous people will be rewarded for their being good/righteous, and evil people will be punished for [doing] evil.
21 »Bekehrt sich jedoch der Gottlose von all seinen Sünden, die er begangen hat, und beobachtet er alle meine Satzungen und übt er Recht und Gerechtigkeit, so soll er gewißlich am Leben bleiben, soll nicht sterben!
But if a wicked person (turns away from/quits) doing all the evil things that he did previously, and if he starts to obey faithfully all my laws, and does what is fair and right [DOU], he will surely remain alive; he will not be executed.
22 Keine von allen Sünden, die er begangen hat, soll ihm noch angerechnet werden: um der Gerechtigkeit willen, die er geübt hat, soll er am Leben bleiben.
He will not be punished for the sins he committed [previously]. Because of the good/righteous things that he has done [since that time], he [be allowed to] remain alive.
23 Habe ich etwa Wohlgefallen am Tode des Gottlosen?« – so lautet der Ausspruch Gottes des HERRN – »und nicht vielmehr daran, daß er sich von seinem bösen Wandel bekehrt und am Leben bleibt?
[I], Yahweh the Lord, declare that I certainly am not [RHQ] happy about wicked people dying. Instead, I am happy when they turn away from their wicked behavior, [because of that, they] remain alive.
24 Wenn aber ein Gerechter sich von seiner Gerechtigkeit abwendet und Böses verübt, alle die Abscheulichkeiten begeht, die der Gottlose zu verüben pflegt: sollte er da am Leben bleiben? Nein, keine von all seinen gerechten Taten, die er vollbracht hat, soll ihm angerechnet werden: um des Treubruchs willen, dessen er sich schuldig gemacht, und wegen der Sünde, die er begangen hat, ihretwegen soll er sterben!
But if a righteous person stops doing righteous things and [starts to] commit sins and does the same detestable things that wicked people do, he will certainly not [RHQ] [be allowed to] remain alive. I will not think about the righteous things that he did previously. Because he did not [do what pleases me], and because of [all] the sins that he has committed, he will be executed.
25 Wenn ihr nun sagt: ›Das Verfahren des Herrn ist nicht das richtige!‹, so hört doch, ihr vom Hause Israel! Sollte wirklich mein Verfahren nicht das richtige sein? Ist nicht vielmehr euer Verfahren unrichtig?
But you say, ‘Yahweh does not act fairly!’ You Israeli people, listen to what I say: It is certainly not [RHQ] what I do that is unfair, it is what you continually do that is not fair/right!
26 Wenn der Gerechte sich von seiner Gerechtigkeit abwendet und Böses verübt, so muß er deswegen sterben: wegen des Bösen, das er begangen hat, deswegen muß er sterben.
If a righteous person (turns away from/quits) doing what is righteous and commits sins, he will [for committing those sins].
27 Wenn sich dagegen der Gottlose von der Gottlosigkeit, die er begangen hat, abwendet und Recht und Gerechtigkeit übt, so wird ein solcher Mensch seine Seele am Leben erhalten.
But if a wicked person turns away from doing wicked things and does what is just and right [DOU], he will save [from being executed/punished].
28 Wenn er zur Einsicht kommt und von allen Übertretungen, deren er sich schuldig gemacht hat, abläßt, so soll er gewißlich das Leben behalten und nicht sterben!
Because he has thought about all the evil things that he did and has turned away from doing them, he will [be allowed to] live. He will not be executed [for having done evil things].
29 Wenn also das Haus Israel sagt: ›Das Verfahren des Herrn ist nicht das richtige‹ – sollte wirklich mein Verfahren nicht das richtige sein, Haus Israel? Ist nicht vielmehr euer Verfahren unrichtig?«
But [you] Israeli people [MTY] say, ‘Yahweh does not act fairly.’ You people of Israel, my behavior is certainly not [RHQ] unfair! It is your behavior that is not right.
30 »Darum werde ich einen jeden von euch, ihr vom Hause Israel, nach seinem Wandel richten« – so lautet der Ausspruch Gottes des HERRN. »Kehrt um und wendet euch von all euren Übertretungen ab, damit sie euch nicht weiter ein Anlaß zur Verschuldung werden!
Therefore, you Israeli people [MTY], I, Yahweh the Lord, will judge each of you according to what you have done. Repent! Turn [away] from all your wicked behavior! Then you will not be destroyed [PRS] because of your sins.
31 Werft alle eure Übertretungen, durch die ihr euch gegen mich vergangen habt, von euch ab und schafft euch ein neues Herz und einen neuen Geist! Denn warum wollt ihr sterben, Haus Israel?
Get rid of all your wicked behavior, and get a new way of thinking [IDM, DOU]. You Israeli people [MTY], (do you really want to be executed for your sins?/you act as though you want to be executed [for your sins]) [RHQ].
32 Ich habe ja kein Wohlgefallen am Tode dessen, der sterben muß« – so lautet der Ausspruch Gottes des HERRN –; »darum bekehrt euch, so werdet ihr leben!«
[I], Yahweh the Lord, declare that I am not pleased about your dying. So repent, and remain alive!”
