Ester 6
1 Als in der folgenden Nacht der König nicht schlafen konnte, ließ er sich das Buch der Denkwürdigkeiten, die Reichschronik, holen; aus dieser wurde ihm dann vorgelesen.
During that night, the sleep of the king fled, —and he commanded to bring in the book of remembrance, the chronicles, and they were read before the king.
2 Da fand sich darin verzeichnet, daß Mardochai den Bigthana und Theres, die beiden königlichen Kammerherren aus der Zahl der Schwellenhüter, zur Anzeige gebracht hatte, weil sie mit dem Plan umgegangen waren, den König Ahasveros aus dem Wege zu räumen.
And it was found written, how that Mordecai had told concerning Bigthana and Teresh, the two eunuchs of the king guarding the threshold, —who had sought to thrust forth a hand upon King Ahasuerus.
3 Als nun der König fragte: »Welche Ehre und Auszeichnung ist dem Mardochai dafür zuteil geworden?« und die Leibdiener, die den Dienst beim Könige hatten, ihm die Antwort gaben, es sei ihm gar keine Belohnung zuteil geworden,
Then said the king, What honour and dignity hath been done unto Mordecai, for this? Then said the king’s young men, who were ministering unto him, Nothing hath been done for him.
4 fragte der König weiter: »Wer ist im Vorhofe?« Nun war Haman gerade in den äußeren Vorhof des königlichen Palastes getreten, um beim König zu beantragen, man möge Mardochai an den Pfahl hängen, den er für ihn hatte aufrichten lassen.
Then said the king, Who is in the court? Now, Haman, had come into the outer court of the kings house, to speak unto the king, to hang Mordecai, upon the gallows which he had prepared for him.
5 Als nun die Leibdiener dem König sagten, Haman sei es, der im Vorhof stehe, befahl der König, er solle eintreten.
So the king’s young men said unto him, Lo! Haman, standing in the court. And the king said, Let him come in.
6 Als nun Haman eingetreten war, fragte ihn der König: »Was kann man einem Manne tun, den der König auszuzeichnen wünscht?« Da dachte Haman bei sich: »Wen anders sollte der König eher auszuzeichnen wünschen als mich?«
So Haman came in, and the king said unto him, What shall be done unto the man in whose honour, the king delighteth? Then said Haman, in his own heart, Unto whom will the king delight to do honour, more than unto me?
7 Er antwortete also dem König: »Wenn der König jemanden auszuzeichnen wünscht,
So Haman said unto the king, —As touching the man in whose honour, the king, delighteth,
8 so bringe man ein königliches Gewand herbei, das der König selbst bereits getragen, und ein Pferd, auf dem der König selbst schon geritten hat und auf dessen Kopfe die Königskrone angebracht ist;
let them bring in royal apparel wherewith the king hath clothed himself, —and the horse whereon the king hath ridden, and the royal crown which hath been set upon his own head;
9 man übergebe dann das Gewand und das Pferd einem der vornehmsten Fürsten des Königs, damit dieser den Mann, den der König auszuzeichnen wünscht, damit bekleide und ihn auf dem Pferde über den Hauptplatz der Stadt reiten lasse und dabei vor ihm her ausrufe: ›So tut man dem Manne, den der König auszuzeichnen wünscht!‹«
and let the apparel and the horse be delivered unto the hand of one of the king’s rulers, one of the nobles, and so let them array the man, in whose honour, the king, delighteth, —and cause him to ride upon the horse through the broadway of the city, and let them proclaim before him, Thus and thus, shall it be done unto the man in whose honour, the king, delighteth!
10 Da sagte der König zu Haman: »Nimm sofort ein solches Gewand und das Pferd, so wie du gesagt hast, und mache es so mit dem Juden Mardochai, der im Tor des Königs(palastes) sitzt! Unterlaß nichts von allem, was du vorgeschlagen hast!«
Then said the king unto Haman, Haste, take the apparel and the horse, just as thou hast said, and do even so unto Mordecai the Jew, who is sitting in the kings gate, —do not let fail a thing, of all which thou hast spoken!
11 Da holte Haman das erforderliche Kleid und das Pferd, bekleidete Mardochai (damit), ließ ihn auf dem Hauptplatz der Stadt umherreiten und rief vor ihm her aus: »So tut man dem Manne, den der König auszuzeichnen wünscht!«
So Haman took the apparel and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, —and caused him to ride through the broadway of the city, and proclaimed before him, Thus and thus, shall it be done unto the man in whoso honour, the king, delighteth!
12 Hierauf kehrte Mardochai an das Tor des Königspalastes zurück; Haman aber eilte traurig und mit verhülltem Haupt nach Hause
Then Mordecai returned unto the gate of the king, —but, Haman, hurried unto his own house, mourning, and with covered head.
13 und erzählte seiner Gattin Seres und seinen sämtlichen Freunden alles, was ihm widerfahren war. Da sagten seine klugen Freunde und seine Frau Seres zu ihm: »Wenn Mardochai, vor dem du jetzt zum erstenmal den kürzeren gezogen hast, ein geborener Jude ist, so wirst du nichts gegen ihn ausrichten, sondern ihm gegenüber ganz den kürzeren ziehen!«
And Haman recounted unto Zeresh his wife, and unto all his friends, everything that had befallen him. Then said his wise men, and Zeresh his wife, unto him, If, of the seed of the Jews, is Mordecai before whom thou hast begun to fall, thou shalt not prevail against him, but shalt, utterly fall, before him.
14 Während sie so noch mit ihm sprachen, erschienen die Kammerherren des Königs und geleiteten Haman eiligst zu dem Mahl, das Esther zugerichtet hatte.
While yet they were speaking with him, the eunuchs of the king, had come, —and they hastened to bring Haman, unto the banquet which Esther had prepared.
