Ester 3
1 Nach diesen Begebenheiten erhob der König Ahasveros den Agagiten Haman, den Sohn Hammedathas, zu den höchsten Ehren und Würden und wies ihm seinen Stuhl über dem aller Fürsten in seiner Umgebung an.
After these things, did King Ahasuerus promote to power Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and exalted him, —and placed his seat above all the rulers who were with him.
2 So mußten denn alle Diener des Königs, die sich am königlichen Hofe befanden, die Knie vor Haman beugen und sich vor ihm niederwerfen; denn so hatte der König es ihm zu Ehren befohlen. Mardochai aber beugte die Knie nicht und warf sich auch nicht nieder.
And, all the kings servants who were in the kings gate, used to bend and bow themselves down unto Haman, for, so, had the king given command concerning him, —but, Mordecai, bent not nor bowed himself down.
3 Da fragten ihn die Diener des Königs, die am Hofe des Königs waren, warum er den Befehl des Königs unbeachtet lasse.
Then said the king’s servants who were in the king’s gate unto Mordecai, —
4 Als sie diese Frage Tag für Tag an ihn richteten, ohne daß er auf sie hörte, meldeten sie es dem Haman, um zu sehen, ob die Rechtfertigung Mardochais anerkannt werden würde; er hatte ihnen nämlich mitgeteilt, daß er ein Jude sei.
Wherefore art, thou, transgressing the command of the king? And it came to pass, when they had spoken unto him day by day, and he had not hearkened unto them, that they told Haman, to see whether the account of Mordecai would stand, for he had told them, that, he, was a Jew.
5 Als nun Haman selbst sah, daß Mardochai vor ihm die Knie nicht beugte und sich nicht niederwarf, geriet er in die höchste Wut;
And, when Haman saw that Mordecai did not bend nor bow down unto him, then was Haman filled with wrath;
6 doch da er es unter seiner Würde hielt, an Mardochai allein die Hand zu legen – man hatte ihm nämlich mitgeteilt, welchem Volke Mardochai angehöre –, so faßte er den Plan, alle Juden, die im ganzen Reiche des Ahasveros lebten, zugleich mit Mardochai auszurotten.
but, it was contemptible in his eyes, to thrust forth a hand on Mordecai alone, for they had told him of the people of Mordecai, —and Haman sought to destroy all the Jews who were throughout all the kingdom of Ahasuerus, the people of Mordecai.
7 Im ersten Monat – das ist der Monat Nisan –, im zwölften Regierungsjahr des Königs Ahasveros, warf man das Pur, d. h. das Los, in Gegenwart Hamans von einem Tage zum andern und von einem Monat zum andern bis zum zwölften Monat, das ist der Monat Adar (und das Los fiel auf den dreizehnten Tag).
In the first month—the same, was the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus, was Pur cast—the same, is the Lot, before Haman, from day to day, and from month to month, —and the lot fell on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the same, is the month Adar.
8 Dann sagte Haman zum König Ahasveros: »Da ist ein einzigartiges Volk, das unter den Völkern in allen Provinzen deines Reiches zerstreut und abgesondert lebt und dessen Gesetze von denen aller anderen Völker abweichen; da sie sich nun nach den Gesetzen des Königs nicht richten, so ist es für den König nicht geziemend, sie ruhig gewähren zu lassen.
Then said Haman unto King Ahasuerus, There is a certain people, scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples, throughout all the provinces of thy kingdom, —whose laws, are diverse from every people, and, the laws of the king, they observe not, for the king, therefore, it is not fit, to suffer them.
9 Wenn es dem König genehm ist, so möge ihre Ausrottung durch einen schriftlichen Erlaß verfügt werden; ich werde dann auch zehntausend Talente Silber in die Hände der Schatzmeister darwägen können, damit diese sie in die königlichen Schatzhäuser abführen.«
If, unto the king, it seem good, let it be written, to destroy them, —and, ten thousand talents of silver, will I weigh out upon the hands of them who are doing the business, to bring [it] into the treasuries of the king.
10 Da zog der König seinen Siegelring von der Hand und reichte ihn dem Agagiten Haman, dem Sohne Hammedathas, dem Judenfeinde,
So then the king took his signet-ring from off his hand, and gave it unto Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the adversary of the Jews;
11 indem er zu ihm sagte: »Das Geld sei dir überlassen und das Volk ebenso: du magst mit ihm nach deinem Belieben verfahren.«
and the king said unto Haman, The silver, is granted thee, —and the people, to do with them, as may seem good in thine eyes.
12 Da wurden die königlichen Staatsschreiber am dreizehnten Tage des ersten Monats berufen, und es wurde genau nach der Weisung Hamans an die königlichen Landpfleger und die Statthalter der einzelnen Provinzen und an die Fürsten eines jeden Volkes mit der Schrift jeder einzelnen Provinz und in der besonderen Sprache jedes Volkes eine schriftliche Verfügung im Namen des Königs Ahasveros erlassen und mit dem Siegelringe des Königs untersiegelt.
Then were called the scribes of the king, in the first month, on the thirteenth day therein, and it was written according to all that Haman commanded unto the satraps of the king, and unto the pashas, who were over every province, and unto the rulers of every people, every province according to the writing thereof, and every people according to the tongue thereof, —in the name of King Ahasuerus, was it written, and sealed with the signet- ring of the king.
13 Die Schreiben wurden dann durch die Eilboten in alle Provinzen des Königs versandt, daß alle Juden, jung und alt, Kinder und Weiber, an einem Tage, nämlich am dreizehnten des zwölften Monats – das ist der Monat Adar –, ausgerottet, ermordet und umgebracht werden sollten; ihr Vermögen solle der Plünderung anheimfallen.
Then were sent letters, by the hand of the runners, into all the provinces of the king, To destroy, to slay and to cause to perish all Jews, both young and old, little ones and women, in one day, on the thirteenth of the twelfth month, the same, is the month Adar, —and the spoil of them to be a prey.
14 Damit aber die Verfügung in jeder einzelnen Provinz erlassen würde, ward eine Abschrift des Schreibens allen Völkern bekanntgemacht, damit sie sich auf den genannten Tag bereithielten.
A copy of the writing, to be delivered as an edict throughout every province, was published to all the peoples, —that they should be ready against this day.
15 Die Eilboten machten sich nach dem Befehl des Königs eilends auf den Weg, während der Erlaß in der Residenz Susa veröffentlicht wurde. Der König und Haman aber setzten sich hin, um zu zechen, während in der Stadt Susa Bestürzung herrschte.
The runners, went forth, urged on by the word of the king, and, the edict, was given in Shusan the palace, —and, the king and Haman, sat down to drink, but, the city of Shusan, was perplexed.
