5 Mose 4

1 »Und nun, Israel, höre auf die Satzungen und auf die Verordnungen, deren Beobachtung ich euch lehren will, damit ihr am Leben bleibt und in den Besitz des Landes kommt, das der HERR, der Gott eurer Väter, euch geben will!

And now, Israel, hearken to the statutes and to the ordinances which I teach you, to do [them], that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which Jehovah the God of your fathers giveth you.

2 Ihr sollt zu den Geboten, die ich euch zur Pflicht mache, nichts hinzufügen und nichts davon wegnehmen, damit ihr die Gebote des HERRN, eures Gottes, beobachtet, die ich euch zur Pflicht mache.

Ye shall not add to the word which I command you, neither shall ye take from it, that ye may keep the commandments of Jehovah your God which I command you.

3 Ihr habt mit eigenen Augen gesehen, was der HERR wegen des Baal-Peor getan hat; denn alle Männer, die dem Baal-Peor nachgingen, hat der HERR, dein Gott, aus deiner Mitte vertilgt,

Your eyes have seen what Jehovah did because of Baal-Peor; for all the men that followed Baal-Peor, Jehovah thy God hath destroyed them from among you;

4 während ihr, die ihr am HERRN, eurem Gott, festgehalten habt, heute noch alle am Leben seid.

but ye that did cleave to Jehovah your God are alive every one of you this day.

5 Bedenkt wohl: ich habe euch Satzungen und Verordnungen gelehrt, wie der HERR, mein Gott, mir geboten hat, damit ihr nach ihnen handelt in dem Lande, in das ihr einzieht, um es in Besitz zu nehmen.

See, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, even as Jehovah my God commanded me, that ye may do so in the land into which ye enter to possess it.

6 So beobachtet sie denn und haltet sie! Denn darin soll eure Weisheit und eure Einsicht nach dem Urteil der übrigen Völker bestehen, die, wenn sie von all diesen Satzungen Kenntnis erhalten werden, bekennen müssen: ›Wahrlich, ein weises und einsichtiges Volk ist diese große Volksgemeinde!‹

And ye shall keep and do them; for that will be your wisdom and your understanding before the eyes of the peoples that shall hear all these statutes, and say, Verily this great nation is a wise and understanding people.

7 Denn wo gäbe es sonst noch ein großes Volk, das eine Gottheit hätte, die ihm so nahe stände, wie der HERR, unser Gott, zu uns steht, sooft wir zu ihm rufen?

For what great nation is there that hath God near to them as Jehovah our God is in everything we call upon him for?

8 Und wo gäbe es sonst noch ein großes Volk, das so gerechte Satzungen und Verordnungen hätte wie dies ganze Gesetz, das ich euch heute vorlege?«

And what great nation is there that hath righteous statutes and ordinances, as all this law which I set before you this day?

9 »Nur hüte dich und nimm dich wohl in acht, daß du die Ereignisse nicht vergißt, die du mit eigenen Augen gesehen hast, und laß sie dir dein ganzes Leben lang nicht aus der Erinnerung entschwinden! Nein, tu sie deinen Kindern und Kindeskindern kund!

Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things that thine eyes have seen (and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life; but thou shalt make them known to thy sons and to thy sons' sons),

10 (Gedenke insbesondere) des Tages, als du am Horeb vor dem HERRN, deinem Gott, standest, als der HERR mir gebot: ›Versammle mir das Volk: ich will sie meine Worte hören lassen, damit sie mich fürchten lernen, solange sie auf dem Erdboden leben, und es auch ihre Kinder lehren!‹

the day that thou stoodest before Jehovah thy God in Horeb, when Jehovah said to me, Gather me the people together, that I may cause them to hear my words, that they may learn them, and fear me all the days that they live upon the earth, and teach them to their children.

11 Da tratet ihr nahe heran und stelltet euch am Fuß des Berges auf, während der Berg bis in das Innerste des Himmels hinein in Feuerglut brannte, von Finsternis, Gewölk und Wetterdunkel umgeben.

And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire to the heart of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and obscurity.

12 Der HERR redete dann zu euch mitten aus dem Feuer heraus; den Schall seiner Worte vernahmt ihr wohl, aber nur den Schall; eine Gestalt dagegen nahmt ihr nicht wahr.

And Jehovah spoke to you from the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words, but ye saw no form; only [ye heard] a voice.

13 Er verkündete euch seinen Bund, den er euch zu halten gebot, die zehn Gebote, die er dann auf zwei Steintafeln schrieb.

And he declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to do, the ten words; and he wrote them on two tables of stone.

14 Mir aber trug der HERR damals auf, euch Satzungen und Verordnungen zu lehren, die ihr befolgen solltet in dem Lande, in das ihr hinüberziehen würdet, um es in Besitz zu nehmen.

And Jehovah commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and ordinances, that ye might do them in the land whither ye are passing over to possess it.

15 Da ihr nun an dem Tage, als der HERR am Horeb aus dem Feuer heraus zu euch redete, keinerlei Gestalt von ihm gesehen habt,

And take great heed to your souls (for ye saw no form on the day that Jehovah spoke to you in Horeb from the midst of the fire),

16 so hütet euch mit aller Sorgfalt davor, euch dadurch zu versündigen, daß ihr euch ein Gottesbild in der Gestalt irgendeiner Bildsäule anfertigt, die Nachbildung eines männlichen oder weiblichen Wesens,

lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the form of any figure, the pattern of male or female,

17 die Nachbildung irgendeines vierfüßigen Tieres, das auf der Erde lebt, die Nachbildung eines beschwingten Vogels, der am Himmel fliegt,

the pattern of any beast that is on the earth, the pattern of any winged fowl that flieth in the heaven,

18 die Nachbildung irgendeines Tieres, das auf dem Erdboden kriecht, die Nachbildung irgendeines Fisches, der im Wasser unter der Erde lebt.

the pattern of anything that creepeth on the ground, the pattern of any fish that is in the waters under the earth;

19 Laß dich auch, wenn du deine Augen zum Himmel hin erhebst, durch den Anblick der Sonne, des Mondes und der Sterne, des ganzen Himmelsheeres, nicht dazu verführen, dich vor ihnen niederzuwerfen und ihnen zu dienen. Denn der HERR, dein Gott, hat sie allen anderen Völkern unter dem ganzen Himmel zur Verehrung zugewiesen:

and lest thou lift up thine eyes to the heavens, and see the sun, and the moon, and the stars, the whole host of heaven, and be drawn away and bow down to them and serve them, which Jehovah thy God hath assigned unto all peoples under the whole heaven.

20 euch aber hat der HERR genommen und euch aus dem Eisenschmelzofen, aus Ägypten, herausgeführt, damit ihr sein Eigentumsvolk würdet, wie ihr es am heutigen Tage seid.

But you hath Jehovah taken, and hath brought you forth out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, that ye might be to him a people of inheritance, as it is this day.

21 Gegen mich aber ist der HERR um euretwillen in solchen Zorn geraten, daß er geschworen hat, ich solle nicht den Jordan überschreiten und nicht das schöne Land betreten, das der HERR, dein Gott, dir zum Besitz geben will;

And Jehovah was angry with me on your account, and swore that I should not go over the Jordan, and that I should not enter in to that good land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee [for] an inheritance;

22 sondern ich muß in diesem Lande sterben, ohne über den Jordan zu kommen, während ihr hinüberziehen werdet und jenes schöne Land in Besitz nehmt.

for I shall die in this land, I shall not go over the Jordan; but ye shall go over, and possess this good land.

23 So hütet euch nun, den Bund, den der HERR, euer Gott, mit euch geschlossen hat, zu vergessen und euch ein Gottesbild anzufertigen, ein Abbild von irgend etwas, das der HERR, dein Gott, dir verboten hat;

Take heed to yourselves lest ye forget the covenant of Jehovah your God, which he made with you, and make yourselves a graven image, the form of anything which Jehovah thy God hath forbidden thee.

24 denn der HERR, dein Gott, ist ein verzehrendes Feuer, ein eifersüchtiger Gott.«

For Jehovah thy God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

25 »Wenn euch dann Kinder und Kindeskinder geboren sind und ihr euch in dem Lande eingelebt habt und euch dann versündigt, indem ihr euch ein Gottesbild in irgendeiner Gestalt anfertigt und somit tut, was dem HERRN, eurem Gott, mißfällt, so daß ihr ihn erbittert,

When thou begettest sons, and sons' sons, and ye have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image, the form of anything, and do evil in the sight of Jehovah thy God, to provoke him to anger,

26 so rufe ich heute den Himmel und die Erde zu Zeugen gegen euch an, daß ihr dann unfehlbar gar bald aus dem Lande verschwinden werdet, in das ihr jetzt über den Jordan zieht, um es in Besitz zu nehmen. Ihr werdet dann nicht lange Zeit in ihm wohnen bleiben, sondern gänzlich daraus vertilgt werden.

I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land whereunto ye pass over the Jordan to possess it: ye shall not prolong your days on it, but shall be utterly destroyed.

27 Der HERR wird euch dann unter die Völker zerstreuen, und nur eine geringe Zahl von euch wird übrigbleiben unter den Heidenvölkern, zu denen der HERR euch führen wird.

And Jehovah will scatter you among the peoples, and ye shall be left a small company among the nations to which Jehovah will lead you.

28 Dort werdet ihr dann Göttern dienen, die von Menschenhänden aus Holz und Stein gemacht sind, die weder sehen noch hören, nicht essen und nicht atmen können.

And ye shall there serve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.

29 Aber von dort aus wirst du den HERRN, deinen Gott, suchen, und du wirst ihn finden, wenn du mit ganzem Herzen und ganzer Seele nach ihm verlangst.

And from thence ye shall seek Jehovah thy God, and thou shalt find him, if thou shalt seek him with thy whole heart and with thy whole soul.

30 Wenn du in Bedrängnis bist und alle diese Leiden dich in zukünftigen Tagen treffen, so wirst du zum HERRN, deinem Gott, zurückkehren und seinen Befehlen gehorchen.

In thy tribulation, and when all these things shall come upon thee, at the end of days, thou shalt return to Jehovah thy God, and shalt hearken to his voice,

31 Denn der HERR, dein Gott, ist ein barmherziger Gott: er wird dich nicht verlassen und dich nicht ins Verderben geraten lassen und wird den Bund nicht vergessen, den er deinen Vätern mit einem Eide bekräftigt hat.«

— for Jehovah thy God is a merciful God, — he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he swore unto them.

32 »Denn forsche doch in den früheren Zeiten nach, die vor dir gewesen sind, seit dem Tage, wo Gott Menschen auf der Erde geschaffen hat, und forsche von einem Ende des Himmels bis zu dessen anderem Ende nach, ob je etwas so Großes sich zugetragen hat oder etwas Derartiges gehört worden ist:

For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man on the earth, and from one end of the heavens to the other end of the heavens, whether there hath been anything as this great thing is, or if anything hath been heard like it?

33 ob je ein Volk die Stimme Gottes mitten aus dem Feuer heraus hat reden hören, wie du sie gehört hast, und dennoch am Leben geblieben ist;

Did [ever] people hear the voice of God speaking from the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, and live?

34 oder ob je ein Gott auch nur den Versuch gemacht hat, auf die Erde zu kommen, um sich ein Volk mitten aus einem andern Volk herauszuholen durch Prüfungen, durch Zeichen und Wunder, durch Krieg, mit starker Hand und hocherhobenem Arm und durch schreckenerregende Großtaten, wie das alles der HERR, euer Gott, in Ägypten vor euren Augen an euch getan hat.

Or hath God essayed to come to take him a nation from the midst of a nation, by trials, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a powerful hand, and by a stretched-out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that Jehovah your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?

35 Du hast es zu sehen bekommen, um zu erkennen, daß der HERR der (einzige) Gott ist und daß es keinen anderen außer ihm gibt.

Unto thee it was shewn, that thou mightest know that Jehovah, he is God — there is none other besides him.

36 Vom Himmel her hat er dich seine Stimme hören lassen, um dich zu unterweisen, und auf der Erde hat er dich sein gewaltiges Feuer sehen lassen, und aus dem Feuer heraus hast du seine Worte vernommen.

From the heavens he made thee hear his voice, that he might instruct thee; and on the earth he shewed thee his great fire; and thou heardest his words from the midst of the fire.

37 Weil er also deine Väter geliebt und ihre Nachkommen nach ihnen erwählt und in eigener Person mit seiner großen Kraft dich aus Ägypten herausgeführt hat,

And because he loved thy fathers, and chose their seed after them, he brought thee out with his countenance, with his great power, out of Egypt,

38 um Völker, die dir an Größe und Macht überlegen waren, vor dir zu vertreiben und um dich herzubringen, damit er dir ihr Land als Eigentum gebe, wie es am heutigen Tage der Fall ist –

to dispossess nations from before thee greater and mightier than thou art, to bring thee in, to give thee their land for an inheritance, as it is this day.

39 so erkenne es heute und nimm es dir zu Herzen, daß der HERR (allein) Gott ist oben im Himmel und unten auf der Erde, sonst aber keiner.

Thou shalt know therefore this day, and consider it in thy heart, that Jehovah, he is God in the heavens above, and on the earth beneath: [there is] none else.

40 Darum beobachte seine Satzungen und Gebote, die ich dir heute zur Pflicht mache, damit es dir und deinen Kindern nach dir gut ergeht und du lange in dem Lande wohnen bleibst, das der HERR, dein Gott, dir für immer geben will.«

And thou shalt keep his statutes, and his commandments, which I command thee this day, that it may be well with thee and with thy sons after thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days on the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee, for ever.

41 Damals sonderte Mose im Ostjordanlande drei Städte aus,

Then Moses separated three cities on this side the Jordan toward the sun-rising,

42 damit ein Totschläger, der einen andern unvorsätzlich getötet hätte, ohne vorher mit ihm verfeindet gewesen zu sein, in eine von diesen Städten fliehen und dadurch sein Leben retten könnte.

that the manslayer might flee thither, who should kill his neighbour unawares, and hated him not previously, that fleeing to one of these cities, he might live:

43 Diese Städte waren: Bezer in der Steppe, im Gebiet der Hochebene, für den Stamm Ruben, ferner Ramoth in Gilead für den Stamm Gad und Golan in Basan für den Stamm Manasse.

Bezer in the wilderness, in the plateau, of the Reubenites, and Ramoth in Gilead, of the Gadites, and Golan in Bashan, of the Manassites.

44 Und dies ist das Gesetz, das Mose den Israeliten vorlegte;

And this is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel:

45 dies sind die Zeugnisse und die Satzungen und die Verordnungen, die Mose den Israeliten bei ihrem Auszug aus Ägypten vortrug,

these are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the ordinances that Moses declared to the children of Israel, when they came out of Egypt,

46 und zwar jenseits des Jordans in dem Tal gegenüber von Beth-Peor im Lande des ehemaligen Amoriterkönigs Sihon, der in Hesbon gewohnt hatte und den Mose und die Israeliten bei ihrem Auszug aus Ägypten geschlagen

on this side the Jordan, in the valley opposite to Beth-Peor, in the land of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel smote when they came out of Egypt;

47 und dessen Land sie in Besitz genommen hatten ebenso wie das Land Ogs, des Königs von Basan, (das Land) der beiden Amoriterkönige, die im Ostjordanlande gewohnt hatten

and they took possession of his land, and the land of Og the king of Bashan, two kings of the Amorites, who were on this side the Jordan, toward the sun-rising;

48 von Aroer am Ufer des Arnonflusses an bis zum Berge Sion – das ist der Hermon –,

from Aroer, which is on the bank of the river Arnon, as far as mount Sion, which is Hermon,

49 nebst der ganzen Steppe auf der Ostseite des Jordans bis an das Meer der Steppe am Fuß der Abhänge des Pisga.

and all the plain on this side the Jordan, eastward, and as far as the sea of the plain, under the slopes of Pisgah.
