5 Mose 1

1 Dies sind die Worte, die Mose an ganz Israel gerichtet hat jenseits des Jordans in der Wüste, in der Steppe, gegenüber Suph, zwischen Paran, Thophel, Laban, Hazeroth und Disahab.

These are the words which Moses spoke unto all Israel on this side of the Jordan, in the wilderness, in the plain opposite Suph, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Chazeroth, and Di-zahab.

2 Elf Tagereisen lang ist der Weg vom Horeb nach dem Gebirge Seir bis Kades-Barnea. –

It is a journey of eleven days from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadesh-barnea'.

3 Im vierzigsten Jahre, am ersten Tage des elften Monats, war es: da trug Mose den Israeliten alles genau so vor, wie der HERR es ihm für sie geboten hatte,

And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spoke unto the children of Israel, according to all that the Lord had commanded him concerning them;

4 nachdem er den Amoriterkönig Sihon, der in Hesbon wohnte, und Og, den König von Basan, der in Astharoth wohnte, bei Edrei geschlagen hatte.

After he had smitten Sichon the king of the Emorites, who dwelt in Cheshbon, and 'Og the king of Bashan, who dwelt at 'Ashtaroth in Edre'i.

5 Jenseits des Jordans, im Lande der Moabiter, unternahm es Mose, die folgende Unterweisung vorzutragen:

On this side of the Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to explain this law, saying,

6 »Der HERR, unser Gott, hat am Horeb so zu uns gesprochen: ›Ihr habt nun lange genug an diesem Berge verweilt;

The Lord our God spoke unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have tarried long enough at this mount;

7 brecht jetzt auf und zieht unverweilt nach dem Bergland der Amoriter und zu all ihren Nachbarn, die in der Jordanebene, in dem Bergland, in der Niederung, im Südland und an der Meeresküste wohnen, (also) in das Land der Kanaanäer und nach dem Libanon bis an den großen Strom, den Euphratstrom.

Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mountain of the Emorites, and unto all its neighboring places, in the plain, in the mountain, and in the lowlands, and in the southern country, and by the coast of the sea, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto the Lebanon, up to the great river, the river Euphrates.

8 Ich übergebe euch hiermit das Land: zieht hinein und nehmt es in Besitz, das Land, dessen Verleihung der HERR euren Vätern Abraham, Isaak und Jakob und ihrer Nachkommenschaft nach ihnen eidlich zugesagt hat.‹«

Behold, I have given up the land before you: go in and take possession of the land which the Lord hath sworn unto your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give it unto them and to their seed after them.

9 »Damals sagte ich zu euch: ›Ich allein bin nicht imstande, (die Sorge für) eure Angelegenheiten zu tragen.

And I said unto you at that time, as followeth, I am not able alone to bear you:

10 Der HERR, euer Gott, hat euch so zahlreich werden lassen, daß ihr schon jetzt den Sternen des Himmels an Menge gleichkommt.

The Lord your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.

11 Der HERR, der Gott eurer Väter, möge eure jetzige Zahl noch tausendmal größer werden lassen und euch so segnen, wie er euch verheißen hat!

May the Lord the God of your fathers make you a thousand times as many more as ye are; and bless you, as he hath spoken unto you.

12 Wie vermöchte ich aber allein die Last und Bürde eurer Angelegenheiten und eurer Streitsachen zu tragen?

How can I by myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife!

13 Bringt aus euren Stämmen weise, verständige und erfahrene Männer her, damit ich sie zu Oberhäuptern über euch einsetze!‹

Furnish for yourselves wise and understanding men, and those known among your tribes, and I will place them as chiefs over you.

14 Da antwortetet ihr mir: ›Der Vorschlag, den du gemacht hast, eignet sich trefflich zur Ausführung.‹

And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good to do.

15 Da nahm ich eure Stammeshäupter, weise und erfahrene Männer, und setzte sie zu Oberhäuptern über euch ein als Oberste über die Tausendschaften oder Hundertschaften und als Anführer von je fünfzig oder je zehn und auch als Obmänner für eure Stämme.

And I took the chiefs of your tribes, wise and known men, and I set them as heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and as officers for your tribes.

16 Zu gleicher Zeit gab ich euren Richtern folgende Anweisung: ›Wenn ihr eure Volksgenossen bei Streitsachen verhört, so entscheidet mit Gerechtigkeit, mag jemand mit einem von seinen Volksgenossen oder mit einem bei ihm wohnenden Fremdling einen Streit haben!

And I commanded your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously, between a man and his brother, and between his stranger.

17 Ihr dürft beim Rechtsprechen die Person nicht ansehen: den Niedrigsten müßt ihr ebenso wie den Vornehmsten anhören und euch vor niemand scheuen; denn das Gericht ist Gottes Sache. Sollte aber ein Rechtsfall für euch zu schwierig sein, so legt ihn mir vor, damit ich die Untersuchung dabei führe.‹

Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; the small as well as the great shall ye hear; ye shall not be afraid of any man; for the judgment belongeth to God: and the cause that is too hard for you shall ye bring unto me, and I will hear it.

18 So gab ich euch damals Anweisung für alles, was ihr tun solltet.«

And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do.

19 »Als wir dann vom Horeb aufgebrochen waren, durchwanderten wir jene ganze große und schreckliche Wüste, die ihr gesehen habt, in der Richtung nach dem Bergland der Amoriter hin, wie der HERR, unser Gott, uns geboten hatte, und kamen bis Kades-Barnea.

And we departed from Horeb, and we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye have seen, by the way of the mountain of the Emorites, as the Lord our God had commanded us; and we came as far as Kadesh-barnea'.

20 Da sagte ich zu euch: ›Ihr seid nun bis zum Bergland der Amoriter gekommen, das der HERR, unser Gott, uns geben will.

And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Emorites, which the Lord our God doth give unto us.

21 Ihr wißt, daß der HERR, euer Gott, euch dies Land übergeben hat; so zieht denn hinauf und nehmt es nach dem Befehl des HERRN, des Gottes eurer Väter, in Besitz: fürchtet euch nicht und seid unverzagt!‹

Behold, the Lord thy God hath given up the land before thee: go up and take possession of it, as the Lord the God of thy fathers hath spoken unto thee; do not fear, and be not discouraged.

22 Da tratet ihr alle zu mir und sagtet: ›Wir wollen einige Männer vor uns her senden, die uns das Land auskundschaften und uns Bericht erstatten sollen über den Weg, auf dem wir hinaufziehen müssen, und über die Städte, zu denen wir gelangen werden.‹

And ye all came near unto me and said, Let us send out men before us, that they may search out for us the land, and bring us word again concerning the way by which we must go up, and the cities to which we shall come.

23 Weil der Vorschlag mir zusagte, wählte ich zwölf Männer aus eurer Mitte, je einen Mann für den Stamm.

And the thing was pleasing in my eyes; and I took of you twelve men, one man for every tribe:

24 Die zogen dann unverweilt in das Bergland hinauf und kamen bis zum Tal Eskol und kundschafteten (das Land) aus.

And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and spied it out.

25 Sie nahmen auch einige von den Früchten des Landes mit, brachten sie zu uns herab und erstatteten uns Bericht mit den Worten: ›Es ist ein schönes Land, das der HERR, unser Gott, uns geben will.‹

And they took in their hand some of the fruit of the land, and brought it down unto us; and they brought us word again, and said, The land which the Lord our God doth give us is good.

26 Doch ihr wolltet nicht hinaufziehen, sondern widersetztet euch dem Befehl des HERRN, eures Gottes,

But you would not go up, and ye rebelled against the order of the Lord your God;

27 und sagtet murrend in euren Zelten: ›Weil der HERR uns haßte, hat er uns aus Ägypten weggeführt, um uns in die Hand der Amoriter fallen zu lassen, damit sie uns vernichten.

And ye murmured in your tents, and said, On account of the hatred of the Lord toward us, hath he brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Emorites, to destroy us.

28 Wohin sollen wir hinaufziehen? Unsere Volksgenossen haben uns das Herz mutlos gemacht, indem sie berichtet haben: Die Leute sind dort zahlreicher als wir und höher gewachsen, die Städte groß und bis an den Himmel befestigt, und sogar Riesen haben wir dort gesehen.‹«

Whither shall we go up? our brethren have made faint our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fortified up to heaven; and moreover the sons of the 'Anakim have we seen there.

29 »Da sagte ich zu euch: ›Laßt euch nicht entmutigen und fürchtet euch nicht vor ihnen!

And I said unto you, Have no dread, nor be ye afraid of them.

30 Der HERR, euer Gott, der vor euch einherzieht, wird selbst für euch streiten, ganz so, wie er euch in Ägypten sichtbar geholfen hat

The Lord your God who goeth before you, he it is who will fight for you; all just as he did for you in Egypt before your eyes;

31 und auch in der Wüste, wo, wie ihr gesehen habt, der HERR, euer Gott, euch getragen hat, wie ein Vater seinen Sohn trägt, auf dem ganzen Wege, den ihr gezogen seid, bis zu eurer Ankunft an diesem Orte.‹

And in the wilderness which thou hast seen, where the Lord thy God bore thee, as a man doth bear his son, on all the way that ye have gone, until ye came unto this place.

32 Aber trotz alledem bliebt ihr ohne Vertrauen auf den HERRN, euren Gott,

Yet in this thing do ye not believe in the Lord your God,

33 der doch auf dem Wege vor euch einherzog, um einen Platz zum Aufschlagen eurer Lager für euch ausfindig zu machen: bei Nacht im Feuer, damit ihr auf dem Wege sehen könntet, den ihr ziehen solltet, und bei Tag in der Wolke.«

Who goeth before you on the way to seek out for you a place for your encamping, in fire by night, to cause you to see on the way in which ye are to go, and in a cloud by day.

34 »Als nun der HERR euer lautes Reden vernahm, wurde er zornig und schwur:

And the Lord heard the voice of your words; and he was wroth, and swore, saying,

35 ›Wahrlich, kein einziger von diesen Männern, von diesem nichtswürdigen Geschlecht, soll das schöne Land zu sehen bekommen, dessen Verleihung ich euren Vätern zugeschworen habe,

Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I have sworn to give unto your fathers;

36 außer Kaleb, dem Sohn Jephunnes; dieser soll es zu sehen bekommen, und ihm und seinen Söhnen will ich das Land geben, dessen Boden er bereits betreten hat, zum Lohn dafür, daß er dem HERRN in allen Stücken gehorsam gewesen ist.‹

Save Caleb the son of Yephunneh, he shall see it, and to him will I give the land upon which he hath trodden, and to his children; because he hath wholly followed the Lord.

37 Auch mir zürnte der HERR um euretwillen, so daß er aussprach: ›Auch du sollst nicht dorthin kommen:

also with me was the Lord angry for your sakes, saying, also thou shalt not go in thither.

38 Josua, der Sohn Nuns, dein Diener, der soll dorthin kommen; ihm sprich Mut ein, denn er soll das Land den Israeliten als Erbbesitz austeilen.

Joshua the son of Nun, who standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: him encourage; for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.

39 Auch eure kleinen Kinder, von denen ihr gesagt habt, sie würden eine Beute (der Feinde) werden, und eure jungen Söhne, die heute noch nicht Gutes und Böses zu unterscheiden wissen, die sollen dorthin kommen! Denn ihnen will ich das Land geben, und sie sollen es in Besitz nehmen.

And your little ones, of whom ye said, They will become a prey, and your children who know not this day either good or evil, these shall go in thither; and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.

40 Ihr aber – kehrt um und zieht in die Wüste in der Richtung nach dem Schilfmeer!‹

But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.

41 Da gabt ihr mir zur Antwort: ›Wir haben uns gegen den HERRN versündigt; wir wollen nun doch hinaufziehen und kämpfen, ganz wie der HERR, unser Gott, uns geboten hat!‹ So gürtetet ihr euch denn sämtlich eure Waffen um und wolltet leichtfertig in das Bergland hinaufziehen.

And ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against the Lord; we indeed will go up and we will fight, according to all that the Lord our God hath commanded us; and ye girded on every man his weapons of war, and ye insisted to go up into the mountain.

42 Da gebot mir der HERR: ›Warne sie hinaufzuziehen und zu kämpfen! Denn ich bin nicht in eurer Mitte; sonst werdet ihr von euren Feinden eine Niederlage erleiden!‹

And the Lord said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, and do not fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.

43 Ich warnte euch also, doch ihr wolltet nicht hören, sondern widersetztet euch dem Befehl des HERRN und zogt in Vermessenheit in das Bergland hinauf.

And I spoke unto you; but ye would not hear; and ye rebelled against the order of the Lord, and you were presumptuous, and went up into the mountain.

44 Da rückten die Amoriter, die in jenem Gebirge wohnten, euch entgegen und verfolgten euch wie ein Bienenschwarm und zersprengten euch [in Seir] bis Horma.

And the Emorites, who dwelt in that mountain: came out against you, and they pursued you, as the bees do, and they overthrew you in Seir, as far as Chormah.

45 Nach eurer Rückkehr jammertet ihr dann vor dem HERRN; er aber achtete nicht auf euer Wehklagen und schenkte euch kein Gehör.

And ye returned and wept before the Lord; but the Lord hearkened not to your voice, nor gave ear unto you.

46 So mußtet ihr denn in Kades die lange Zeit bleiben, die ihr dort zugebracht habt.«

And ye tarried in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye tarried there.
