Daniel 5
1 Der König Belsazar veranstaltete für seine tausend Großen ein prächtiges Gastmahl und trank Wein, vor den Tausend sitzend.
King Belshazzar prepared a great feast for a thousand of his lords, and before these thousand did he drink wine.
2 In der Weinlaune befahl Belsazar dann, man solle die goldenen und silbernen Gefäße herbeibringen, die sein Vater Nebukadnezar aus dem Tempel zu Jerusalem weggenommen hatte, damit aus ihnen der König und seine Großen, seine Gemahlinnen und Nebenfrauen tränken.
Belshazzar ordered, through the counsel of the wine, to bring in the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken away out of the temple which was in Jerusalem: that the king, and his lords, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therefrom.
3 So wurden denn die goldenen (und silbernen) Gefäße, die man aus dem Tempel des Hauses Gottes zu Jerusalem geraubt hatte, herbeigebracht; und der König und seine Großen, seine Gemahlinnen und Nebenfrauen tranken.
Then they brought in the golden vessels that were taken away out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his lords, his wives, and his concubines, drank from them.
4 Sie tranken Wein und sangen dabei Loblieder auf ihre Götter von Gold und Silber, von Kupfer, Eisen, Holz und Stein.
They drank wine, and praised their gods of gold, and of silver, of copper, of iron, of wood, and of stone.
5 In demselben Augenblick kamen die Finger einer Menschenhand zum Vorschein und schrieben, dem Kronleuchter gegenüber, auf die getünchte Wand des königlichen Saales, so daß der König den Rücken der schreibenden Hand sah.
At that same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote opposite to the chandelier upon the plaster of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.
6 Da entfärbte sich das Antlitz des Königs, beängstigende Gedanken überfielen ihn, und alle Kraft wich aus seinen Gliedern, so daß seine Knie schlotterten.
Then was the king's color changed, and his thoughts troubled him: so that the bands of his loins were loosed, and his knees knocked one against the other.
7 Der König rief laut, man solle die Beschwörer, die Chaldäer und die Wahrsager herbeiholen, und sagte zu den Weisen Babylons: »Wer die Schrift dort lesen kann und mir ihre Deutung zu geben weiß, der soll in Purpur gekleidet werden und eine goldene Kette am Halse tragen und der Dritte in der Regierung des Reiches sein.«
the king called with might to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king commenced, and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whatsoever man will read this writing, and tell me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall rule as the third in the kingdom.
8 Da traten denn alle Weisen des Königs heran, konnten aber weder die Schrift lesen noch ihre Deutung dem König angeben.
Then came in all the wise men of the king; but they were not able to read the writing, nor to make its interpretation known to the king.
9 Als nun der König Belsazar in die höchste Angst geriet und sich im Gesicht verfärbte und seine Großen fassungslos waren,
Then was king Belshazzar greatly terrified, and his color was changed on him, and his lords were confounded.
10 begab sich die Königinmutter infolge der Aufforderungen des Königs und seiner Großen in den Speisesaal und richtete folgende Worte an den König: »O König, mögest du ewig leben! Du brauchst dich nicht ängstigenden Gedanken hinzugeben und dich im Gesicht nicht zu verfärben!
[Now] the queen in consequence of the words of the king and of his lords came into the banquet-house; the queen commenced and said, O king, live for ever; let thy thoughts not trouble thee, nor let thy color be changed:
11 Es gibt in deinem Reiche einen Mann, in welchem der Geist der heiligen Götter wohnt und bei dem schon während der Regierung deines Vaters Erleuchtung, Scharfsinn und Weisheit von geradezu göttlicher Art gefunden worden sind, so daß dein Vater, der König Nebukadnezar, ihn zum Obersten der Gelehrten und Beschwörer, der Chaldäer und Wahrsager erhoben hat, dein eigener Vater, o König,
There is a man in thy kingdom in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father enlightenment and intelligence and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him: and king Nebuchadnezzar thy father appointed him chief of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers: —yes, thy father, O king.—
12 weil eben ein außergewöhnlicher Geist, Verstand und Scharfsinn in der Auslegung von Träumen und in der Lösung von Rätseln und in der Erklärung geheimnisvoller Dinge bei ihm zu finden waren, nämlich bei Daniel, dem der König den Namen Beltsazar gegeben hat. So lasse man also Daniel rufen: der wird die Deutung schon geben!«
Forasmuch as a superior spirit, and knowledge, and intelligence, interpreting of dreams, and solving of riddles, and of untying knotty [doubts], were found in him, in Daniel, to whom the king assigned the name of Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will tell the interpretation.
13 Als nun Daniel vor den König hereingeführt war, redete dieser ihn folgendermaßen an: »Du bist also Daniel, einer von den in die Verbannung geführten Judäern, die mein königlicher Vater aus Juda hergebracht hat?
Then was Daniel brought in before the king: the king commenced and said unto Daniel, Art thou Daniel, who art of the children of the exiles of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Judah?
14 Ich habe von dir gehört, daß ein göttlicher Geist in dir wohnt und daß Erleuchtung, Scharfsinn und außergewöhnliche Weisheit bei dir gefunden werden.
And I have heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that enlightenment and intelligence and superior wisdom are found in thee.
15 Nun sind soeben die Weisen und Beschwörer vor mich geführt worden, um die Schrift dort zu lesen und mir ihren Sinn zu deuten; sie sind aber nicht imstande gewesen, mir die Deutung der Worte zu geben.
And now the wise men, the astrologers, had been brought before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me its interpretation; but they were not able to tell the interpretation of the matter.
16 Von dir aber habe ich gehört, daß du Deutungen zu geben und geheimnisvolle Dinge zu erklären vermagst. Nun denn, wenn du die Schrift dort zu lesen und mir ihren Sinn anzugeben vermagst, so sollst du in Purpur gekleidet werden und eine goldene Kette am Halse tragen und der Dritte in der Regierung des Reiches sein!«
But I have truly heard concerning thee, that thou art able to give interpretations, and untie knotty [doubts]: now if thou art able to read the writing, and make known to me its interpretation, thou shalt be clothed with purple, with a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt rule as the third in the kingdom.
17 Da gab Daniel dem König folgende Antwort: »Deine Geschenke magst du für dich behalten und deine Belohnungen einem andern geben; jedoch die Schrift will ich dem Könige lesen und ihren Sinn ihm angeben.
Then answered Daniel and said before the king, Let thy gifts remain in thy possession, and bestow thy bounty on another: nevertheless will I read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.
18 O König! Der höchste Gott hatte deinem Vater Nebukadnezar Herrschaft und Macht, Ruhm und Herrlichkeit verliehen;
O thou king! the most high God gave kingdom, and greatness, and glory, and honor unto Nebuchadnezzar thy father;
19 und infolge der Macht, die er ihm verliehen hatte, zitterten und bebten vor ihm alle Völker, Stämme und Zungen. Er tötete, wen er wollte, und ließ am Leben, wen er wollte; er erhöhte, wen er wollte, und erniedrigte, wen er wollte.
And because of the greatness that he had given unto him, all people, nations, and languages trembled and shook before him: whom he pleased he slew; and whom he pleased he kept alive; and whom he pleased he lifted up; and whom he pleased he brought low.
20 Als aber sein Herz sich überhob und sein Sinn stolz wurde bis zur Vermessenheit, wurde er von seinem Königsthron herabgestürzt und seine Würde ihm genommen.
But, when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit hardened to deal presumptuously, he was cast down from the throne of his kingdom, and his dignity did they take from him;
21 Aus der Verbindung mit Menschen wurde er ausgestoßen, tierisches Wesen nahm von ihm Besitz, und bei den Wildeseln war sein Aufenthalt; man gab ihm Gras zur Nahrung wie den Rindern, und sein Leib wurde vom Tau des Himmels benetzt, bis er zur Erkenntnis kam, daß der höchste Gott über das Königtum der Menschen verfügt und in dieses einsetzen kann, wen er will.
And from the sons of men was he driven forth, and his heart became equal with [that of] the beasts, and with the wild asses was his dwelling; they suffered him to eat herbs like oxen, and with the dew of heaven was his body made wet: till he acknowledged that the most high God ruleth over the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he pleaseth.
22 Du aber, Belsazar, sein Sohn, hast dein Herz nicht demütig gemacht, wiewohl du dieses alles wußtest,
And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thy heart, though thou knewest all this;
23 hast dich vielmehr über den Herrn des Himmels erhoben, so daß man die Gefäße seines Tempels vor dich hat bringen müssen, damit du mit deinen Großen, deinen Gemahlinnen und Nebenfrauen Wein aus ihnen tränkest; und auf die Götter von Silber und Gold, von Kupfer und Eisen, Holz und Stein, die weder sehen noch hören können und keinen Verstand besitzen, hast du Loblieder gesungen, dagegen dem Gott, in dessen Hand dein Lebensodem steht und von dem dein ganzes Schicksal abhängt, hast du keine Ehre erwiesen.
But against the Lord of heaven hast thou lifted thyself up; and the vessels of his house have they brought before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine from them; and the gods of silver, and gold, of copper, iron, wood, and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor know, hast thou praised; and the God in whose hand thy soul is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:
24 Infolgedessen ist diese gewölbte Hand von ihm gesandt und die Schrift dort hingezeichnet worden.
Thereupon was sent from before him the part of the hand, and this writing was noted down.
25 Was dort aber geschrieben steht, lautet so: Mene, mene, tekel upharsin;
And this is the writing that was noted down, M'ne, M'ne, T'kel, Upharsin.
26 und dies ist die Deutung der Worte: Mene = gezählt hat Gott die Tage deines Königtums und ihm ein Ende bereitet;
This the interpretation of the matter: M'ne, God hath numbered thy kingdom, and made an end of it.
27 Tekel = gewogen bist du auf der Waage und zu leicht erfunden;
T'kel, Thou least been weighed in the balances, and been found wanting.
28 Peres = zerteilt wird dein Reich und wird den Medern und Persern gegeben.«
P'ress; Thy kingdom hath been divided, and is given to the Medes and Persians.
29 Hierauf gab Belsazar Befehl, und man kleidete Daniel in Purpur, legte ihm eine goldene Kette um den Hals und rief öffentlich von ihm aus, daß er als Dritter im Reiche herrschen solle. –
Then gave Belshazzar the order, and they clothed Daniel with purple, with a chain of gold about his neck, and they made a proclamation concerning him, that he should rule as the third in the kingdom.
30 Noch in derselben Nacht wurde Belsazar, der Chaldäerkönig, ermordet,
In that very night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.
31 und Darius, der Meder, erhielt die Herrschaft im Alter von zweiundsechzig Jahren.
And Darius the Median obtained the kingdom, when he was sixty and two years old.
