2 Samuel 11

1 Im folgenden Jahre aber sandte David zu der Zeit, wo die Könige ins Feld zu ziehen pflegen, Joab samt seinen Hauptleuten und der Heeresmacht von ganz Israel aus. Sie verwüsteten das Land der Ammoniter und belagerten Rabba, während David in Jerusalem geblieben war.

And it came to pass, at the return of the same season of the year, at the time when kings go forth, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of 'Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David remained behind at Jerusalem.

2 Da begab es sich eines Abends, daß David sich von seinem Lager erhob und, als er auf dem Dache des königlichen Palastes umherging, vom Dache aus eine Frau sich baden sah; die Frau war von ungewöhnlicher Schönheit.

And it happened at evening-tide, that David arose from off his couch, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and he saw from the roof a woman bathing herself; and the woman was of a very beautiful appearance.

3 Als er sich nun durch Boten nach der Frau erkundigen ließ und man ihm berichtete, daß es Bathseba, die Tochter Eliams, die Frau des Hethiters Uria sei,

And David sent and inquired after the woman; and some one said, Behold, this is Beth-sheba', the daughter of Eli'am, the wife of Uriyah the Hittite.

4 sandte David Boten hin und ließ sie holen. Sie kam zu ihm, und er wohnte ihr bei – sie hatte sich aber eben von ihrer Verunreinigung gereinigt –; darauf kehrte sie in ihre Wohnung zurück.

And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her, and she had just purified herself from her uncleanness; and she returned unto her house.

5 Als die Frau dann guter Hoffnung wurde und dem David Mitteilung von ihrem Zustande machte,

And the woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, I am with child.

6 da ließ David dem Joab sagen: »Schicke mir den Hethiter Uria her!«, und Joab kam dem Befehle nach.

And David sent to Joab, Send unto me Uriyah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriyah to David.

7 Als nun Uria zu David kam, erkundigte dieser sich nach dem Befinden Joabs, nach dem Ergehen des Heeres und nach dem Stande des Krieges.

And when Uriyah was come unto him, David asked after the well-being of Joab, and after the well-being of the people, and how the war prospered.

8 Darauf sagte David zu Uria: »Gehe jetzt in dein Haus hinunter und nimm ein Fußbad«; und als Uria den Palast des Königs verließ, wurde eine königliche Ehrenmahlzeit hinter ihm hergetragen;

And David said to Uriyah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriyah went forth out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess of food from the king.

9 aber Uria legte sich am Eingang des Königspalastes bei allen übrigen Dienern seines Herrn nieder und ging nicht in sein Haus hinunter.

But Uriyah laid himself down at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.

10 Als man nun dem König meldete, Uria sei nicht in sein Haus hinabgegangen, fragte ihn David: »Du bist doch von der Reise heimgekommen: warum gehst du nicht in deine Wohnung?«

And they told David, saying, Uriyah is not gone down unto his house: and David said unto Uriyah, Art thou not come from a journey? why then art thou not gone down unto thy own house?

11 Da antwortete Uria dem Könige: »Die Lade sowie Israel und Juda sind in Hütten untergebracht, und mein Herr Joab und die Diener meines Herrn müssen auf freiem Felde lagern, und da sollte ich in mein Haus gehen, um zu essen und zu trinken, und sollte es mir bei meiner Frau wohl sein lassen? So wahr der HERR lebt und so wahr du selbst lebst: das tue ich nicht!«

Then said Uriyah unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah abide in booths; and my Lord Joab and the servants of my Lord are encamped in the open field: and should I alone go unto my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.

12 Darauf sagte David zu Uria: »Du magst auch heute noch hier bleiben: morgen werde ich dich entlassen.« So blieb denn Uria an diesem Tage noch in Jerusalem.

And David said unto Uriyah, Tarry here also this day, and tomorrow will I send thee off. So Uriyah remained in Jerusalem on that day and the following.

13 Am folgenden Tage aber lud David ihn ein, bei ihm zu essen und zu trinken, und er machte ihn trunken; aber am Abend ging Uria wieder hin, um sich auf sein Lager bei den übrigen Leuten seines Herrn schlafen zu legen, und ging nicht in sein Haus hinunter.

And David invited him, and he ate and drank before him, and he made him drunken; and he went out in the evening to lie down on his resting-place with the servants of his lord; but to his house he did not go down.

14 Am nächsten Morgen aber schrieb David einen Brief an Joab und ließ ihn durch Uria überbringen.

And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriyah.

15 In dem Briefe hatte er folgendes geschrieben: »Stellt Uria vornhin, wo am hitzigsten gekämpft wird, und zieht euch dann hinter ihm zurück, damit er erschlagen wird und den Tod findet.«

And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set Uriyah in front, opposite to the hottest fight, and then withdraw from behind him, that he may be smitten and die.

16 So stellte denn Joab bei der Belagerung der Stadt den Uria an eine Stelle, von der er wußte, daß dort tapfere Gegner standen.

And it came to pass, when Joab was enclosing the city, that he placed Uriyah toward the spot of which he knew that valiant men were there.

17 Als dann die Städter einen Ausfall machten und mit Joab handgemein wurden, fielen manche von der Mannschaft, von den Leuten Davids; und auch der Hethiter Uria fand dabei den Tod.

And the men of the city went out and fought with Joab; and there fell some of the people, of the servants of David, and there died also Uriyah the Hittite.

18 Als hierauf Joab an David einen Bericht über den ganzen Verlauf des Kampfes schickte,

Then did Joab send, and told unto David all the events of the war.

19 gab er dem Boten den Befehl: »Wenn du dem König den ganzen Verlauf des Kampfes bis zu Ende berichtet hast

And he charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast finished telling all the events of the war to the king,

20 und der König dann vor Zorn aufbraust und dich fragt: ›Warum seid ihr zum Angriff so nahe an die Stadt herangerückt? Wußtet ihr nicht, daß man von der Mauer herab schießen würde?

And it happen that the king's wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore did you approach unto the city to fight? knew ye not, that they would shoot down from off the wall?

21 Wer hat Abimelech, den Sohn Jerubbeseths, erschlagen? Hat nicht ein Weib den oberen Stein einer Handmühle von der Mauer auf ihn herabgeworfen, so daß er in Thebez den Tod fand? Warum seid ihr so nahe an die Mauer herangerückt?‹ – dann sage nur: ›Auch dein Knecht, der Hethiter Uria, ist ums Leben gekommen.‹«

Who smote Abimelech the son of Yerubbesheth? did not a woman throw down upon him a piece of an upper mill-stone from off the wall so that he died at Thebez? why did ye approach unto the wall? then must thou say, Also thy servant Uriyah the Hittite is dead.

22 Darauf ging der Bote hin und richtete nach seiner Ankunft den Auftrag Joabs bei David genau aus.

And the messenger went, and came and told unto David all for which Joab had sent him.

23 Er meldete dem Könige nämlich: »Weil die Feinde uns überlegen und bis aufs freie Feld gegen uns vorgedrungen waren, so mußten wir sie bis an den Eingang des Stadttors zurückdrängen.

And the messenger said unto David, Because the men overpowered us and came out against us into the field; but we set upon them, as far as the entrance of the gate.

24 Da aber schossen die Schützen von der Mauer herab auf deine Leute, und dabei fielen einige von den Leuten des Königs; auch dein Knecht, der Hethiter Uria, fand den Tod.«

And the archers then shot at thy servants from off the wall; and there died some of the servants of the king, and also thy servant Uriyah the Hittite is dead.

25 Da sagte David zu dem Boten: »Melde dem Joab folgendes: ›Laß dir diesen Vorfall nicht leid sein! Denn das Schwert frißt eben bald diesen, bald jenen. Setze nur deine Belagerung der Stadt entschlossen fort und zerstöre sie!‹ So sollst du ihm Mut zusprechen!«

Then said David to the messenger, Thus shalt thou say to Joab, Let this thing not be displeasing in thy eyes; for at times this, at other times the other will the sword devour; continue firmly in thy war against the city, and overthrow it: and thus do thou encourage him.

26 Als nun die Frau Urias den Tod ihres Mannes erfuhr, hielt sie die Totenklage um ihren Gatten;

And when the wife of Uriyah heard that Uriyah her husband had died, she mourned for her lord.

27 sobald aber die Trauerzeit vorüber war, ließ David sie in sein Haus holen. Sie wurde also seine Frau und gebar ihm einen Sohn. Aber die Tat, die David verübt hatte, erregte das Mißfallen des HERRN.

And when the [time of] mourning was past, David sent and took her to his house, and she became his wife; and she bore him a son. But the thing which David had done was displeasing in the eyes of the Lord.
