1 Nun befanden sich siebzig Söhne Ahabs in Samaria. Daher schrieb Jehu Briefe und sandte sie nach Samaria an die Befehlshaber der Stadt sowie an die Ältesten und an die Erzieher der königlichen Prinzen; die lauteten so:

And Achab had seventy sons in Samaria. And Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria, unto the rulers of Yizre'el, the elders, and to those that brought up Achab's children, saying,

2 »Und nun, wenn dieses Schreiben an euch gelangt – ihr seid ja über die Söhne eures Herrn sowie über die Wagen und Rosse, über die festen Plätze und Waffenvorräte bestellt –:

And now as soon as this letter cometh to you, seeing that there are with you your master's sons, and there are with you the chariots and the horses, and the fortified city, and the armor:

3 so wählt euch den besten und tüchtigsten unter den Söhnen eures Herrn aus und setzt ihn auf den Thron seines Vaters und kämpft für das Haus eures Herrn!«

Select then the best and the most fitting of your master's sons, and set him on his father's throne, and fight for your master's house.

4 Aber sie fürchteten sich gar sehr und sagten: »Nachdem sich die beiden Könige gegen ihn nicht haben behaupten können, wie sollten wir da bestehen?«

But they were exceedingly much afraid, and said, Behold, the two kings could not stand before him: how then shall we be able to stand?

5 So ließen denn der Hausminister und der Stadtoberste sowie die Ältesten und die Erzieher folgende Botschaft an Jehu gelangen: »Wir sind deine Knechte und wollen allen deinen Befehlen nachkommen; wir wollen niemand zum König machen: tu, was dir beliebt!«

And the superintendent over the house, and the commander over the city, and the elders, and the bringers up of the children, sent to Jehu, saying, We are thy servants, and all that thou mayest say unto us will we do; we will not set up any one as king: do what is good in thy eyes.

6 Da schrieb Jehu einen zweiten Brief an sie, der so lautete: »Wenn ihr es mit mir haltet und mir gehorsam sein wollt, so nehmt die Köpfe der Männer, der Söhne eures Herrn, und kommt damit morgen um diese Zeit zu mir nach Jesreel.« Die Söhne des Königs befanden sich nämlich, siebzig an der Zahl, bei den vornehmsten Männern der Stadt, die sie zu erziehen hatten.

Then wrote he to them a letter the second time, saying, If ye be for me, and if ye will hearken unto my voice, then take the heads of the men, your master's sons, and come to me to Yizre'el by this time tomorrow. Now the king's sons, seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, who brought them up.

7 Sobald nun das Schreiben an sie gelangte, nahmen sie die Prinzen und ermordeten alle siebzig; ihre Köpfe legten sie dann in Körbe beisammen und sandten sie an ihn nach Jesreel.

And it came to pass, when the letter came to them, that they took the king's sons and slaughtered them, seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets, and sent them to him to Yizre'el.

8 Als dann der Bote hinkam und ihm meldete, man habe die Köpfe der Söhne des Königs gebracht, befahl er: »Schichtet sie in zwei Haufen am Eingang des Tores bis morgen früh auf!«

And the messenger came, and told him, saying, They have brought the heads of the king's sons. And he said, Place ye them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until the morning.

9 Am folgenden Morgen aber ging er hinaus und trat vor das ganze Volk mit den Worten: »Ihr seid ohne Schuld! Ich bin es ja gewesen, der sich gegen meinen Herrn verschworen und ihn ums Leben gebracht hat; doch wer hat diese alle ermordet?

And it came to pass in the morning, that he went out, and stood, and said to all the people, Ye are righteous: behold, I conspired against my master, and slew him; but who hath killed all these?

10 So erkennt denn hieraus, daß keine Drohung, die der HERR gegen das Haus Ahabs ausgesprochen hat, unerfüllt bleibt; nein, der HERR hat alles ausgeführt, was er durch den Mund seines Knechtes Elia angekündigt hat.«

Know now that there shall not fall of the word of the Lord unto the earth, the least that the Lord hath spoken concerning the house of Achab; and the Lord hath done that which he spoke by means of his servant Elijah.

11 Hierauf ließ Jehu alle, die in Jesreel vom Hause Ahabs noch übrig waren, umbringen, auch alle seine Großen, seine Vertrauten und seine Priester, bis er ihm keinen einzigen mehr am Leben übriggelassen hatte.

And Jehu smote all that yet remained of the house of Achab in Yizre'el, and all his great men, and his acquaintance, and his priests, until he had left him none that escaped.

12 Hierauf machte sich Jehu auf den Weg, um sich nach Samaria zu begeben. Als er unterwegs bei Beth-Eked-Haroim war,

And he arose and departed, and came to Samaria; he was just at the binding-house of the shepherds, on the way:

13 traf er die Brüder Ahasjas, des Königs von Juda, an, und fragte sie, wer sie seien. Sie antworteten: »Wir sind die Brüder Ahasjas und sind hergekommen, um die Söhne des Königs und die Söhne der Königin-Mutter zu besuchen.«

When Jehu met with the brothers of Achazyahu the king of Judah, and he said, Who are ye? And they said, The brothers of Achazyahu are we; and we are come down to salute the children of the king and the children of the queen.

14 Da gab er den Befehl: »Ergreift sie lebendig!« Da ergriff man sie lebendig, ermordete sie (und warf sie) in die Zisterne von Beth-Eked, zweiundvierzig Mann; keinen einzigen von ihnen ließ er am Leben.

And he said, Seize them alive. And they seized them alive, and slaughtered them at the pit of the binding-house, two and forty men; and he left not one of them remaining.

15 Als er dann von dort weiterzog, traf er auf Jonadab, den Sohn Rechabs, der ihm entgegenkam. Der begrüßte ihn, er aber fragte ihn: »Bist du aufrichtig gegen mich gesinnt, wie ich gegen dich?« Als Jonadab mit »Ja« antwortete, sagte Jehu: »Wenn es wirklich so ist, so gib mir deine Hand!« Da reichte er ihm seine Hand, und Jehu ließ ihn zu sich in den Wagen steigen

And he went away thence, and met Yehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him: and he saluted him, and said to him, Is all right in thy heart, as my heart is with thy heart? And Yehonadab answered, It is; it is: give me thy hand. And he gave him his hand; and he took him up to him into the chariot.

16 und sagte: »Komm mit mir und sieh dir mit Freuden meinen Eifer für den HERRN an!« So nahm er ihn denn in seinem Wagen mit

And he said, Come with me, and behold my zeal for the Lord. So they made him ride in his chariot.

17 und ließ nach seiner Ankunft in Samaria alle umbringen, die in Samaria von Angehörigen Ahabs noch übrig waren, bis er sie alle ausgerottet hatte, wie der HERR es dem Elia zuvor angekündigt hatte.

And when he came to Samaria, he smote all that yet remained unto Achab in Samaria, till he had exterminated him, according to the word of the Lord which he had spoken to Elijah.

18 Hierauf ließ Jehu das ganze Volk zusammenkommen und sagte zu ihnen: »Ahab hat dem Baal nur eine geringe Verehrung erwiesen, Jehu aber wird ihm eifriger dienen.

And Jehu assembled all the people, and said unto them, Achab hath served Ba'al a little: Jehu will serve him much.

19 Daher laßt jetzt alle Propheten Baals, alle seine Diener und alle seine Priester zu mir kommen, keiner darf fehlen! Denn ich habe für Baal ein großes Opferfest im Sinn: jeder, der dabei fehlt, ist des Todes!« Jehu ging aber mit Hinterlist so zu Werke, um die Baalsdiener auszurotten.

And now call unto me all the prophets of Ba'al, all his worshippers, and all his priests: let no one be missing; for I have a great sacrifice to make for Ba'al; whosoever will be missing, shall not live. But Jehu did it in subtilty, in order to destroy the worshippers of Ba'al.

20 Dann befahl Jehu: »Kündigt eine Festversammlung zu Ehren Baals an!« Als man sie öffentlich bekanntgemacht hatte,

And Jehu said, Sanctify a solemn assembly for Ba'al. And they proclaimed it.

21 sandte Jehu Boten in alle Teile Israels umher. Da fanden sich alle Verehrer Baals ein, kein einziger blieb übrig, der nicht erschienen wäre. Als sie sich dann in den Baalstempel begeben hatten, so daß der Tempel von einem Ende bis zum andern mit Menschen angefüllt war,

And Jehu sent throughout all Israel: and there came all the worshippers of Ba'al, so that there was not a man remaining that came not; and they came into the house of Ba'al; and the house of Ba'al was full from one end to another.

22 gab er dem Aufseher über die Kleiderkammer den Befehl, allen Baalsverehrern Gewänder zu verabreichen. Als der die Gewänder für sie herausgegeben hatte,

And he said unto him that was over the wardrobe, Bring forth vestments for all the worshippers of Ba'al. And he brought forth for them the vestments.

23 begab sich Jehu mit Jonadab, dem Sohne Rechabs, in den Baalstempel und sagte zu den Baalsverehrern: »Seht genau nach, daß sich hier unter euch ja kein Verehrer Gottes des HERRN befinde, sondern ausschließlich Verehrer Baals!«

And Jehu went, with Yehonadab the son of Rechab, into the house of Ba'al, and he said unto the worshippers of Ba'al, Search, and look that there be not here with you any of the servants of the Lord, but the worshippers of Ba'al entirely alone.

24 Hierauf schickten sie sich an, die Schlacht- und Brandopfer darzubringen. Jehu hatte aber draußen achtzig Mann aufgestellt und zu ihnen gesagt: »Wer einen von den Männern, die ich euch in die Hände liefere, entkommen läßt, soll mit seinem eigenen Leben für ihn haften!«

And they went in to prepare sacrifices and burnt-offerings; but Jehu had set for himself without eighty men, and said, [If there be] a man that escapeth from the men whom I deliver into your hands, [there shall be given] life for his life.

25 Als man dann mit der Darbringung des Brandopfers fertig war, befahl Jehu den Leibwächtern und Rittern: »Geht hinein, haut sie nieder: keiner darf davonkommen!« Sie machten sie also mit dem Schwert nieder, warfen den Altar um und drangen in das Allerheiligste des Baalstempels ein;

And it came to pass, as soon as they had made an end of preparing the burnt-offering, that Jehu said to the runners and to the officers, Go in, smite them: let none come forth. And they smote them with the edge of the sword; and the runners and the captains cast them out, and went as far as the city of the house of Ba'al.

26 dann schafften sie die Götzensäulen aus dem Baalstempel hinaus und verbrannten sie,

And they brought forth the statues out of the house of Ba'al, and burnt every one of them.

27 zertrümmerten das Standbild Baals, rissen den Baalstempel nieder und machten Aborte daraus, die bis auf den heutigen Tag geblieben sind.

And they broke down the statue of Ba'al, and broke down the house of Ba'al, and made it a common sewer unto this day.

28 So rottete Jehu den Baalsdienst in Israel aus;

Thus Jehu exterminated Ba'al out of Israel.

29 jedoch von den Sünden, zu denen Jerobeam, der Sohn Nebats, die Israeliten verführt hatte, von diesen ließ auch Jehu nicht ab, nämlich von der Verehrung der goldenen Stierbilder, die in Bethel und Dan aufgestellt waren.

Nevertheless the sins of Jerobo'am the son of Nebat, who induced Israel to sin, Jehu departed not from in following them, [namely, ] the golden calves that were in Beth-el, and that were in Dan.

30 Der HERR ließ zwar dem Jehu verkünden: »Weil du alles, was mir wohlgefällig war, eifrig ausgeführt und am Hause Ahabs ganz nach meinem Sinn gehandelt hast, so sollen Nachkommen von dir bis ins vierte Glied auf dem Throne von Israel sitzen«;

And the Lord said unto Jehu, Forasmuch as thou hast acted well in doing what is right in my eyes, and hast done in accordance with all that was in my heart unto the house of Achab: children of the fourth generation after thee shall sit upon the throne of Israel.

31 aber Jehu ließ es sich nicht angelegen sein, mit ganzem Herzen nach der Weisung des HERRN, des Gottes Israels, zu wandeln; er ließ nicht ab von den Sünden, zu denen Jerobeam Israel verführt hatte.

But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the Lord the God of Israel with all his heart: he departed not from the sins of Jerobo'am, who induced Israel to sin.

32 Zu jener Zeit begann der HERR Teile vom Gebiet Israels loszureißen; denn Hasael schlug sie in allen Grenzgebieten Israels:

In those days the Lord began to cut Israel short; and Chazael smote them in all the boundary of Israel;

33 östlich vom Jordan die ganze Landschaft Gilead, die Stämme Gad, Ruben und Manasse, von Aroer an, das am Arnonflusse liegt, sowohl Gilead als auch Basan. –

From the Jordan to the rising of the sun, all the land of Gil'ad, the Gadites, and the Reubenites, and the Menassites, from 'Aro'er which is by the river Arnon, both Gil'ad and Bashan.

34 Die übrige Geschichte Jehus aber und alles, was er unternommen hat, sowie alle seine tapferen Taten, das findet sich bekanntlich aufgezeichnet im Buch der Denkwürdigkeiten der Könige von Israel.

Now the rest of the acts of Jehu, and all that he did, and all his mighty deeds, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

35 Als Jehu sich dann zu seinen Vätern gelegt und man ihn in Samaria begraben hatte, folgte ihm sein Sohn Joahas in der Regierung nach.

And Jehu slept with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria. And Jehoachaz his son became king in his stead.

36 Die Zeit aber, die Jehu in Samaria über Israel regiert hat, betrug achtundzwanzig Jahre.

And the time that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty and eight years.
