2 Chronik 32
1 Nach diesen Begebenheiten und dieser von Hiskia bewiesenen Treue zog Sanherib, der König von Assyrien, heran, drang in Juda ein und belagerte die festen Plätze in der Absicht, sie für sich zu erobern.
After these things and this faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and entered into Judah, and encamped against the fortified cities, and thought to break into them.
2 Als nun Hiskia sah, daß Sanherib herangerückt war und sich zum Angriff auf Jerusalem anschickte,
And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was minded to fight against Jerusalem,
3 entschloß er sich im Einvernehmen mit seinen höchsten Beamten und seinen Heerführern, die Wasserquellen außerhalb der Stadt zu verschütten, und sie waren ihm dabei behilflich.
he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the fountains of waters that were outside the city; and they helped him.
4 Es wurden also Leute in großer Zahl aufgeboten, welche die sämtlichen Quellen und den Bach, der mitten durch das Land floß, verschütteten, indem sie sagten: »Warum sollen die Könige von Assyrien, wenn sie kommen, Wasser in Menge vorfinden?«
And there was gathered together much people, and they stopped all the fountains, and the torrent that flows through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water?
5 Alsdann machte er sich mit Entschlossenheit ans Werk und ließ die Stadtmauer überall, wo sie niedergerissen war, wiederherstellen und Türme auf ihr errichten und draußen noch eine zweite Mauer aufführen; auch befestigte er das Millo in der Davidsstadt und ließ Waffen und Schilde in Menge herstellen.
And he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised it up to the towers, and [built] another wall outside, and fortified the Millo of the city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance.
6 Weiter setzte er kriegstüchtige Anführer über das Heer ein, versammelte diese um sich auf dem freien Platz am Stadttor und sprach ihnen Mut zu mit den Worten:
And he set captains of war over the people, and assembled them to him on the open place at the gate of the city, and spoke consolingly to them saying,
7 »Seid mutig und entschlossen! Fürchtet euch nicht und seid unverzagt vor dem König von Assyrien und vor dem ganzen Haufen, der mit ihm zieht! Denn mit uns ist ein Stärkerer als mit ihm:
Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him; for there are more with us than with him:
8 mit ihm ist nur ein Arm von Fleisch, mit uns aber ist der HERR, unser Gott, der wird uns helfen und unsere Kriege führen!« Und das Volk fühlte sich durch die Worte Hiskias, des Königs von Juda, ermutigt.
with him is an arm of flesh, but with us is Jehovah our God to help us and to fight our battles. And the people depended upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.
9 Darnach sandte Sanherib, der König von Assyrien, während er selbst mit seiner ganzen Heeresmacht vor Lachis stand, (einige von) seinen Dienern nach Jerusalem an Hiskia, den König von Juda, und an alle Judäer, die sich in Jerusalem befanden, mit der Botschaft:
After this, Sennacherib king of Assyria sent his servants to Jerusalem (but he himself was before Lachish, and all his power with him), unto Hezekiah king of Judah, and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying,
10 »So läßt Sanherib, der König von Assyrien, euch sagen: ›Worauf verlaßt ihr euch, daß ihr in Jerusalem eingeschlossen sitzen bleibt?
Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria: On what do ye rely that ye abide in the siege in Jerusalem?
11 Ja, Hiskia ist es, der euch irreführt, um euch dem Tode durch Hunger und Durst preiszugeben, indem er euch verheißt: Der HERR, unser Gott, wird uns aus der Gewalt des Königs von Assyrien erretten!
Does not Hezekiah persuade you, to give yourselves over to die by famine and by thirst, saying, Jehovah our God will deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
12 Ist das nicht derselbe Hiskia, der den Höhendienst und die Altäre eures Gottes weggeschafft und in Juda und Jerusalem das Gebot erlassen hat: Vor einem einzigen Altar sollt ihr anbeten, und nur auf ihm dürft ihr opfern?
Has not the same Hezekiah removed his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem saying, Ye shall worship before one altar, and burn incense upon it?
13 Wißt ihr nicht, wie ich und meine Väter mit allen Völkern der (anderen) Länder verfahren sind? Haben etwa die Götter der Völker in den (übrigen) Ländern ihr Land aus meiner Gewalt irgendwie zu erretten vermocht?
Do ye not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the countries? Were the gods of the nations of the countries in any wise able to deliver their country out of my hand?
14 Wo ist unter allen Göttern dieser Völker, die meine Väter dem Untergange geweiht haben, einer gewesen, der sein Volk aus meiner Gewalt hätte erretten können? Wie sollte euer Gott da euch aus meiner Gewalt zu erretten vermögen?
Who is there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers have utterly destroyed, that was able to deliver his people out of my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of my hand?
15 So laßt euch denn jetzt nicht von Hiskia betören und euch nicht auf solche Weise irreführen und schenkt ihm keinen Glauben! Denn kein Gott irgendeines Volkes und irgendeines Reiches hat (bisher) sein Volk aus meiner und meiner Väter Gewalt zu erretten vermocht; geschweige denn, daß euer Gott euch aus meiner Gewalt sollte erretten können!‹«
And now, let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you in this manner, neither yet believe him; for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hand, nor out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of my hand?
16 Seine Gesandten redeten dann noch mehr gegen Gott den HERRN und gegen seinen Knecht Hiskia;
And his servants spoke yet more against Jehovah, the [true] God, and against his servant Hezekiah.
17 auch hatte er, um den HERRN, den Gott Israels, zu verhöhnen und zu lästern, einen Brief folgenden Inhalts geschrieben: »Sowenig die Götter der Völker in den (übrigen) Ländern ihr Volk aus meiner Gewalt errettet haben, ebensowenig wird der Gott Hiskias sein Volk aus meiner Gewalt erretten!«
And he wrote a letter to rail at Jehovah the God of Israel, and to speak against him saying, As the gods of the nations of the countries have not delivered their people out of my hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of my hand.
18 Sie riefen dies auch der Bevölkerung von Jerusalem, die auf der Mauer stand, mit lauter Stimme auf jüdisch zu, um sie zu schrecken und in Angst zu versetzen, damit sie so die Stadt in ihre Gewalt brächten,
And they cried with a loud voice in the Jewish [language] to the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall, to frighten them and to trouble them; that they might take the city.
19 und redeten von dem Gott Jerusalems wie von den Göttern der Heidenvölker der Erde, die doch nur Machwerke von Menschenhänden sind.
And they spoke of the God of Jerusalem as of the gods of the peoples of the earth, the work of man's hand.
20 Als nun infolgedessen der König Hiskia und der Prophet Jesaja, der Sohn des Amoz, beteten und um Hilfe zum Himmel schrien,
And because of this, king Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz prayed and cried to heaven.
21 da sandte der HERR einen Engel, der sämtliche Kriegsleute und Fürsten und Heerführer im Lager des Königs von Assyrien sterben ließ, so daß jener mit Schimpf und Schande in sein Land zurückkehrte; und als er sich dann in den Tempel seines Gottes begab, brachten ihn dort einige von seinen leiblichen Söhnen mit dem Schwerte um.
And Jehovah sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the princes and the captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. And he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels made him fall there with the sword.
22 So rettete der HERR den Hiskia und die Bewohner Jerusalems aus der Gewalt des Königs Sanherib von Assyrien und aus der Gewalt aller (seiner übrigen Feinde) und verschaffte ihnen Ruhe auf allen Seiten.
And Jehovah saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all, and protected them on every side.
23 Und viele brachten dem HERRN Gaben nach Jerusalem und dem König Hiskia kostbare Geschenke, so daß er fortan bei allen Völkern in hohem Ansehen stand.
And many brought gifts unto Jehovah to Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah; and he was thenceforth magnified in the sight of all the nations.
24 Als Hiskia zu jener Zeit auf den Tod erkrankte, betete er zum HERRN, und dieser erhörte ihn und gab ihm ein Wunderzeichen.
In those days Hezekiah was sick unto death, and he prayed to Jehovah; and he spoke to him and gave him a sign.
25 Aber Hiskia bewies sich für die ihm erwiesene Wohltat nicht dankbar, sondern sein Herz überhob sich; darum brach ein Zorngericht über ihn und über Juda und Jerusalem herein.
But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit [done] to him, for his heart was lifted up; and there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.
26 Weil aber Hiskia sich nunmehr wegen seines Hochmuts demütigte, er samt der Bevölkerung von Jerusalem, erging das Zorngericht des HERRN über sie nicht schon bei Lebzeiten Hiskias.
And Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of Jehovah came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah.
27 Hiskia besaß sehr großen Reichtum und bedeutende Macht und legte sich auch Schatzkammern an für Silber, Gold und Edelsteine, für Spezereien, Schilde und Kostbarkeiten aller Art,
And Hezekiah had very much riches and honour; and he made himself treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of pleasant vessels;
28 auch Vorratshäuser für den Ertrag von Getreide, Wein und Öl und Stallungen für allerlei Arten von Vieh und Hürden für die Herden.
storehouses also for the increase of corn and new wine and oil, and stalls for all manner of beasts, and [he procured] flocks for the stalls.
29 Auch Städte legte er sich an, und er besaß große Herden von Kleinvieh und Rindern; denn Gott hatte ihm ein sehr bedeutendes Vermögen verliehen.
And he provided for himself cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance; for God gave him very much substance.
30 Hiskia ist es auch gewesen, der den oberen Ausfluß des Wassers des Gihon verschüttet und es nach der Westseite hinunter nach der Davidsstadt geleitet hat; und bei allen seinen Unternehmungen hatte er Glück.
And he, Hezekiah, stopped the upper outlet of the waters of Gihon, and brought it straight down to the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.
31 Gleichwohl bei Gelegenheit der Gesandtschaft, welche die Fürsten von Babylon an ihn geschickt hatten, um Erkundigungen wegen des Wunderzeichens einzuziehen, das im Lande geschehen war, verließ ihn Gott, um ihn auf die Probe zu stellen, damit er seine Gesinnung völlig kennenlernte.
However in [the matter of] the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent to him to inquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all [that was] in his heart.
32 Die übrige Geschichte Hiskias aber und seine frommen Taten finden sich bekanntlich bereits aufgezeichnet in der Offenbarung des Propheten Jesaja, des Sohnes des Amoz, und im Buch der Könige von Juda und Israel.
And the rest of the acts of Hezekiah and his good deeds, behold, they are written in the vision of the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
33 Als Hiskia sich dann zu seinen Vätern gelegt hatte, begrub man ihn am Aufstieg zu den Gräbern der Nachkommen Davids; und ganz Juda und die Bevölkerung Jerusalems erzeigten ihm Ehre bei seinem Tode. Sein Sohn Manasse folgte ihm dann in der Regierung nach.
And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the highest place of the sepulchres of the sons of David; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honour at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.
