1 Samuel 5
1 Die Philister aber hatten die Lade Gottes erbeutet und brachten sie von Eben-Eser nach Asdod;
After the army of the Philistia people-group captured God’s sacred chest in Ebenezer [town], they took it to Ashdod [which is one of their biggest cities].
2 dort nahmen die Philister die Lade Gottes, brachten sie in den Tempel Dagons und stellten sie neben Dagon hin.
They carried it into the temple of [their god] Dagon, and placed it alongside a statue of Dagon.
3 Als aber die Einwohner von Asdod am nächsten Morgen früh in den Tempel Dagons kamen, fanden sie Dagon vor der Lade des HERRN am Boden auf dem Angesicht liegen. Da nahmen sie Dagon und stellten ihn wieder an seinen Platz.
But early the next morning, when the people of Ashdod [went to see it, they saw that] the statue had fallen on its face in front of Yahweh’s sacred chest! So they set the statue up in its place again.
4 Als sie aber am folgenden Tage frühmorgens kamen, fanden sie Dagon wieder auf seinem Angesicht am Boden vor der Lade des HERRN liegen, und zwar lagen der Kopf Dagons und seine beiden Hände abgetrennt auf der Schwelle des Tempels; nur sein Fischrumpf war neben ihr noch übriggeblieben.
But the following morning, [they saw that] it had fallen down in front of the sacred chest again. But this time, the statue’s head and hands had broken off, and were lying in the doorway. Only its body remained intact/unbroken.
5 Daher treten in Asdod die Priester Dagons und alle, die in den Dagontempel hineingehen, nicht auf die Schwelle Dagons bis auf den heutigen Tag.
That is the reason that since that time, the priests of Dagon and everyone else who enters the temple of Dagon in Ashdod do not step on the doorsill [where the hands and head of Dagon fell].
6 Hierauf legte sich die Hand des HERRN schwer auf die Einwohner von Asdod; er setzte sie in Schrecken und suchte die Stadt und ihr Gebiet mit Pestbeulen heim.
Then Yahweh [SYN] powerfully caused the people of Ashdod and the people who lived in nearby villages to have (a very great plague/serious illness) of tumors.
7 Als nun die Leute von Asdod diese ihre schlimme Lage erkannten, sagten sie: »Die Lade des Gottes Israels darf nicht bei uns bleiben! Denn seine Hand lastet schwer auf uns und unserm Gott Dagon.«
The men of Ashdod realized why this was happening, and they cried out, “The god of the Israeli people is punishing us and is also punishing our god Dagon. So we cannot allow the sacred chest of the god of the Israelis to remain here!”
8 Da beriefen sie durch Boten sämtliche Fürsten der Philister in ihre Stadt zusammen und fragten: »Was sollen wir mit der Lade des Gottes Israels machen?« Da antworteten jene: »Nach Gath soll die Lade des Gottes Israels überführt werden!«, und sie ließen sie auch wirklich dorthin bringen.
They summoned the five kings of the Philistia people-group, and asked them, “What should we do with the sacred chest of the god of the Israelis?” The kings replied, “Take the sacred chest to Gath [city].” So they moved it to Gath.
9 Aber als sie dorthin geschafft worden war, kam die Hand des HERRN über die Stadt mit einer ganz gewaltigen Bestürzung, und er schlug auch hier die Leute der Stadt, junge und alte, so daß Pestbeulen an ihnen zum Ausbruch kamen.
But after they took it to Gath, Yahweh powerfully struck the people of that city also, with the result that many men, including young men and old men, got tumors on their skin. Then the people became very afraid.
10 Als man dann die Lade Gottes nach Ekron gebracht hatte, schrien die Einwohner der Stadt nach Ankunft der Lade Gottes in Ekron: »Man hat die Lade des Gottes Israels zu uns hergebracht, um uns und unsere Einwohnerschaft umzubringen!«
So they took the sacred chest to Ekron [city]. But when the men carried the sacred chest into Ekron, the people there cried out, “Why are you bringing the sacred chest of the God of the Israelis into our city [RHQ]? [By doing that] you will cause us and the rest of our people to die!”
11 Da ließen sie wiederum alle Fürsten der Philister durch Boten zusammenrufen und baten: »Schickt die Lade des Gottes der Israeliten wieder zurück an den Ort, wohin sie gehört, damit sie nicht uns und unser Volk umbringt!« Denn es war ein tödlicher Schrecken über die ganze Stadt gekommen: überaus schwer lastete die Hand Gottes auf ihr;
The people were terrified/in panic because [they knew that] God was starting to punish them severely. So they summoned the [five] kings of the Philistia people-group again, and [pleaded with them], saying, “Take this sacred chest of the god of the Israelis back to its own place! If you do not do that quickly, we will all die!”
12 denn die Leute, die nicht starben, litten qualvoll an Pestbeulen, und das Wehgeschrei der Stadt stieg zum Himmel empor.
Some of the people in Ekron had already died, and the rest of the people were suffering because of tumors on their skin. So they all cried out to their gods [MTY] [to help them].
