Job 22
1 Da antwortete Eliphas von Theman und sprach:
Then answered Eliphaz the Themanite, and said,
2 Kann denn ein Mann Gottes etwas nützen? Nur sich selber nützt ein Kluger.
Can a man be serviceable unto God? Truly the intelligent is serviceable unto himself.
3 Meinst du, dem Allmächtigen liege daran, daß du gerecht seist? Was hilft's ihm, wenn deine Wege ohne Tadel sind?
Is it any pleasure to the Almighty that thou art righteous? or is it any gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?
4 Meinst du wegen deiner Gottesfurcht strafe er dich und gehe mit dir ins Gericht?
Is it out of fear of thee that he will reproach thee? or go with thee into judgment?
5 Nein, deine Bosheit ist zu groß, und deiner Missetaten ist kein Ende.
Is not thy evil great? and no end to thy iniquities?
6 Du hast etwa deinem Bruder ein Pfand genommen ohne Ursache; du hast den Nackten die Kleider ausgezogen;
For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brothers for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.
7 du hast die Müden nicht getränkt mit Wasser und hast dem Hungrigen dein Brot versagt;
Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and from the hungry thou hast withholden bread.
8 du hast Gewalt im Lande geübt und prächtig darin gegessen;
But as for the man of a strong arm, he obtained the land, and the highly honored could dwell therein.
9 die Witwen hast du leer lassen gehen und die Arme der Waisen zerbrochen.
Widows hast thou sent away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.
10 Darum bist du mit Stricken umgeben, und Furcht hat dich plötzlich erschreckt.
Therefore are snares round about thee, and sudden dread terrifieth thee.
11 Solltest du denn nicht die Finsternis sehen und die Wasserflut, die dich bedeckt?
Or seest thou not the darkness? and the abundance of water which covereth thee?
12 Ist nicht Gott hoch droben im Himmel? Siehe, die Sterne an droben in der Höhe!
Is not God in the height of heaven? and beholding the highest elevation of the stars, however high they are?
13 Und du sprichst: “Was weiß Gott? Sollte er, was im Dunkeln ist, richten können?
But thou sayest, “What doth God know? can he judge behind the darkness?
14 Die Wolken sind die Vordecke, und er sieht nicht; er wandelt im Umkreis des Himmels.”
Thick clouds are a covering for him, so that he will not see; and he walketh along on the circle of heaven.”
15 Achtest du wohl auf den Weg, darin vorzeiten die Ungerechten gegangen sind?
Wilt thou [thus] observe the path of ancient times which the men of injustice have trodden?
16 die vergangen sind, ehe denn es Zeit war, und das Wasser hat ihren Grund weggewaschen;
Who were shrivelled up before their time, whose foundation was flooded away like a river;
17 die zu Gott sprachen: “Hebe dich von uns! was sollte der Allmächtige uns tun können?”
Who said unto God, “'Depart from us:” and what wrought the Almighty for them?
18 so er doch ihr Haus mit Gütern füllte. Aber der Gottlosen Rat sei ferne von mir.
And yet it was he that filled their houses with good things; but the counsel of the wicked be [still] far from me.
19 Die Gerechten werden es sehen und sich freuen, und der Unschuldige wird ihrer spotten:
The righteous will see it, and be glad; and the innocent will laugh them to scorn.
20 “Fürwahr, unser Widersacher ist verschwunden; und sein Übriggelassenes hat das Feuer verzehrt.”
“Is not he destroyed that rose up against us, and hath not the fire consumed what they had left?”
21 So vertrage dich nun mit ihm und habe Frieden; daraus wird dir viel Gutes kommen.
Do but become acquainted with him, and be at peace: thereby will happiness come unto thee.
22 Höre das Gesetz von seinem Munde und fasse seine Reden in dein Herz.
Do but accept instruction from his mouth, and lay up his saying in thy heart.
23 Wirst du dich bekehren zu dem Allmächtigen, so wirst du aufgebaut werden. Tue nur Unrecht ferne hinweg von deiner Hütte
If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, so thou wilt but remove wrong-doing far away from thy tents.
24 und wirf in den Staub dein Gold und zu den Steinen der Bäche das Ophirgold,
And throw down in the dust precious metals, and [the gold of] Ophir to the stones of the brooks:
25 so wird der Allmächtige dein Gold sein und wie Silber, das dir zugehäuft wird.
Then will the Almighty be thy precious metal, and brightly-shining silver unto thee.
26 Dann wirst du Lust haben an dem Allmächtigen und dein Antlitz zu Gott aufheben.
For then wilt thou have in the Almighty thy delight, and thou canst lift up unto God thy face.
27 So wirst du ihn bitten, und er wird dich hören, und wirst dein Gelübde bezahlen.
Thou wilt make entreaty unto him, and he will hear thee, and thy vows wilt thou pay.
28 Was du wirst vornehmen, wird er dir lassen gelingen; und das Licht wird auf deinem Wege scheinen.
And if thou decree a thing, it will be fulfilled unto thee; and upon thy ways the light will shine.
29 Denn die sich demütigen, die erhöht er; und wer seine Augen niederschlägt, der wird genesen.
For when men are brought low, thou wilt say, Pride [hath done it]; but those of lowly eyes [God] will help.
30 Auch der nicht unschuldig war wird errettet werden; er wird aber errettet um deiner Hände Reinigkeit willen.
He will even deliver him who is not guiltless: and thou wilt be delivered by the purity of thy hands.
