1 Und Ahab sagte Isebel alles an, was Elia getan hatte und wie er hatte alle Propheten Baals mit dem Schwert erwürgt.
And Achab told Izebel all that Elijah had done, and withal that he had slain all the prophets with the sword.
2 Da sandte Isebel einen Boten zu Elia und ließ ihm sagen: Die Götter tun mir dies und das, wo ich nicht morgen um diese Zeit deiner Seele tue wie dieser Seelen einer.
Then sent Izebel a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So may the gods do to me, and may they thus continue, if about this time tomorrow I do not render thy life as the life of any one of them.
3 Da er das sah, machte er sich auf und ging hin um seines Lebens willen und kam gen Beer-Seba in Juda und ließ seinen Diener daselbst.
And when he saw this, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba', which belongeth to Judah, and he left his young man there.
4 Er aber ging hin in die Wüste eine Tagereise und kam hinein und setzte sich unter einen Wacholder und bat, daß seine Seele stürbe, und sprach: Es ist genug, so nimm nun, HERR, meine Seele; ich bin nicht besser denn meine Väter.
But he himself went forward into the wilderness a day's journey, and he came and sat down under a certain broom-bush: and he requested for himself to die; and he said, It is enough, now, O Lord, take away my soul; for I am not better than my fathers.
5 Und er legte sich und schlief unter dem Wacholder. Und siehe, ein Engel rührte ihn an und sprach zu ihm: Steh auf und iß!
And he laid himself down and slept under a certain broom-bush, and, behold then, an angel was touching him, and said unto him, Arise, eat.
6 Und er sah sich um, und siehe, zu seinen Häupten lag ein geröstetes Brot und eine Kanne mit Wasser. Und da er gegessen und getrunken hatte, legte er sich wieder schlafen.
And he looked about, and, behold, there was at his head a cake baked on coals, and a cruise of water; and he ate and drank, and laid himself down again.
7 Und der Engel des HERRN kam zum andernmal wieder und rührte ihn an und sprach: Steh auf und iß! denn du hast einen großen Weg vor dir.
And the angel of the Lord came again, the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise, eat; because the journey is yet far for thee.
8 Er stand auf und aß und trank und ging durch die Kraft derselben Speise vierzig Tage und vierzig Nächte bis an den Berg Gottes Horeb
And he arose, and ate and drank; and he went on the strength of that eating forty days and forty nights unto the mount of God, Horeb.
9 und kam daselbst in eine Höhle und blieb daselbst über Nacht. Und siehe, das Wort des HERRN kam zu ihm und sprach zu ihm: Was machst du hier, Elia?
And he came there unto a cave, and remained there over night: and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and said unto him, What dost thou here, Elijah?
10 Er sprach: Ich habe geeifert um den HERRN, den Gott Zebaoth; denn die Kinder Israel haben deinen Bund verlassen und deine Altäre zerbrochen und deine Propheten mit dem Schwert erwürgt, und ich bin allein übriggeblieben, und sie stehen darnach, daß sie mir mein Leben nehmen.
And he said, I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thy altars have they thrown down, and thy prophets have they slain with the sword: and I am left by myself alone, and they have sought my life, to take it away.
11 Er sprach: Gehe heraus und tritt auf den Berg vor den HERRN! Und siehe, der HERR ging vorüber und ein großer, starker Wind, der die Berge zerriß und die Felsen zerbrach, vor dem HERRN her; der HERR war aber nicht im Winde. Nach dem Winde aber kam ein Erdbeben; aber der HERR war nicht im Erdbeben.
And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord: and, behold, the Lord passed by, and a wind, great and strong, rending the mountains, and breaking in pieces the rocks [went] before the Lord; but not in the wind was the Lord: and after the wind was an earthquake: but not in the earthquake was the Lord;
12 Und nach dem Erdbeben kam ein Feuer; aber der HERR war nicht im Feuer. Und nach dem Feuer kam ein stilles, sanftes Sausen.
And after the earthquake was a fire; but not in the fire was the Lord; and after the fire was the sound of a soft whisper.
13 Da das Elia hörte, verhüllte er sein Antlitz mit seinem Mantel und ging heraus und trat in die Tür der Höhle. Und siehe, da kam eine Stimme zu ihm und sprach: Was hast du hier zu tun, Elia?
And it came to pass, when Elijah heard it, that he concealed his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave: and, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What dost thou here, Elijah?
14 Er sprach: Ich habe um den HERRN, den Gott Zebaoth, geeifert; denn die Kinder Israel haben deinen Bund verlassen, deine Altäre zerbrochen, deine Propheten mit dem Schwert erwürgt, und ich bin allein übriggeblieben, und sie stehen darnach, daß sie mir das Leben nehmen.

15 Aber der HERR sprach zu ihm: Gehe wiederum deines Weges durch die Wüste gen Damaskus und gehe hinein und salbe Hasael zum König über Syrien,
And the Lord said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus; and go, anoint Chazael to be king over Syria;
16 Und Jehu, den Sohn Nimsis, zum König über Israel, und Elisa, den Sohn Saphats, von Abel-Mehola, zum Propheten an deiner Statt.
And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel; and Elisha' the son of Shaphat of Abel-mecholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy stead.
17 Und es soll geschehen, daß wer dem Schwert Hasaels entrinnt, den soll Jehu töten.
And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Chazael shall Jehu slay; and him that escapeth the sword of Jehu shall Elisha' slay.
18 Und ich will übriglassen siebentausend in Israel: alle Kniee, die sich nicht gebeugt haben vor Baal, und allen Mund, der ihn nicht geküßt hat.
And I will leave in Israel seven thousand, all the knees which have not been bent unto Ba'al, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.
19 Und er ging von dannen und fand Elisa, den Sohn Saphats, daß er pflügte mit zwölf Jochen vor sich hin; und er war selbst bei dem zwölften. Und Elia ging zu ihm und warf seinen Mantel auf ihn.
And he departed thence, and found Elisha' the son of Shaphat, who was ploughing; twelve yoke of oxen were before him, and he was with the twelfth: and Elijah passed up to him, and cast his mantle toward him.
20 Er aber ließ die Rinder und lief Elia nach und sprach: Laß mich meinen Vater und meine Mutter küssen, so will ich dir nachfolgen. Er sprach zu ihm: Gehe hin und komme wieder; bedenke, was ich dir getan habe!
And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss but my father and my mother, and I will [then] follow thee: and he said unto him, Go, return; for what have I done to thee?
21 Und er lief wieder von ihm und nahm ein Joch Rinder und opferte es und kochte das Fleisch mit dem Holzwerk an den Rindern und gab's dem Volk, daß sie aßen. Und machte sich auf und folgte Elia nach und diente ihm.
And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and with the instruments of the oxen he boiled the flesh for them, and he gave it unto the people, and they did eat; and then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.
