Titus 1
1 Paulus, ein Knecht Gottes, aber ein Apostel Jesu Christi nach dem Glauben der Auserwählten Gottes und der Erkenntnis der Wahrheit zur Gottseligkeit,
Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, appointed to further the faith of God's chosen ones and the knowledge of the truth that is in accordance with godliness,
2 auf Hoffnung des ewigen Lebens, welches verheißen hat, der nicht lüget, Gott, vor den Zeiten der Welt, (aiōnios g166)
in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before time began; (aiōnios g166)
3 hat aber offenbaret zu seiner Zeit sein Wort durch die Predigt, die mir vertrauet ist nach dem Befehl Gottes, unsers Heilandes:
in his own time he revealed his word through the preaching with which I was entrusted by the command of God our Savior;
4 Titus, meinem rechtschaffenen Sohn, nach unser beider Glauben: Gnade, Barmherzigkeit, Friede von Gott dem Vater und dem HERRN Jesu Christo, unserm Heilande.
to Titus, my true child in our common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior.
5 Derhalben ließ ich dich in Kreta, daß du solltest vollends anrichten, da ich's gelassen habe und besetzen die Städte hin und her mit Ältesten, wie ich dir befohlen habe;
The reason I left yoʋ in Crete was for yoʋ to put in order what remained to be done and to appoint elders in every town, as I directed yoʋ.
6 wo einer ist untadelig, eines Weibes Mann, der gläubige Kinder habe, nicht berüchtiget, daß sie Schwelger und ungehorsam sind.
An elder must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, with faithful children who are not rebellious and cannot be accused of debauchery.
7 Denn ein Bischof soll untadelig sein, als ein Haushalter Gottes, nicht eigensinnig, nicht zornig, nicht ein Weinsäufer, nicht pochen, nicht unehrliche Hantierung treiben,
For an overseer, as God's steward, must be above reproach, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for sordid gain,
8 sondern gastfrei, gütig, züchtig, gerecht, heilig, keusch
but hospitable, a lover of goodness, sensible, just, holy, and self-controlled,
9 und halte ob dem Wort, das gewiß ist und lehren kann, auf daß er mächtig sei, zu ermahnen durch die heilsame Lehre und zu strafen die Widersprecher.
holding firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others with sound doctrine and refute those who contradict it.
10 Denn es sind viele freche und unnütze Schwätzer und Verführer, sonderlich die aus der Beschneidung,
For there are many rebellious people, full of meaningless talk and deception, especially those of the circumcision faction.
11 welchen man muß das Maul stopfen, die da ganze Häuser verkehren und lehren, was nicht taugt, um schändliches Gewinns willen.
They must be silenced, because they are ruining entire households by teaching what they ought not to teach, for the sake of sordid gain.
12 Es hat einer aus ihnen gesagt, ihr eigener Prophet: Die Kreter sind immer Lügner, böse Tiere und faule Bäuche.
One of their very own prophets said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, and lazy gluttons.”
13 Dies Zeugnis ist wahr. Um der Sache willen strafe sie scharf, auf daß sie gesund seien im Glauben
This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, so that they may become sound in the faith,
14 und nicht achten auf die jüdischen Fabeln und Menschengebote, welche sich von der Wahrheit abwenden.
not paying any attention to Jewish myths or the commandments of men who turn away from the truth.
15 Den Reinen ist alles rein; den Unreinen aber und Ungläubigen ist nichts rein, sondern unrein ist beides, ihr Sinn und Gewissen.
To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and their consciences are defiled.
16 Sie sagen, sie erkennen Gott; aber mit den Werken verleugnen sie es, sintemal sie sind, an welchen Gott Greuel hat, und gehorchen nicht und sind zu allem guten Werk untüchtig.
They profess to know God, but by their works they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient, and have proven themselves to be unqualified for any good work.
