Rut 3

1 Und Naemi, ihre Schwieger, sprach zu ihr: Meine Tochter, ich will dir Ruhe schaffen, daß dir's wohlgehe.

One day, Naomi said to Ruth, “My daughter, should I not seek to secure a home for you where you will be happy and prosperous?

2 Nun, der Boas, unser Freund, bei des Dirnen du gewesen bist, worfelt diese Nacht Gerste auf seiner Tenne.

Is not Boaz, with whose girls you have been, a relative of ours?

3 So bade dich und salbe dich und lege dein Kleid an und gehe hinab auf die Tenne, daß dich niemand kenne, bis man ganz gegessen und getrunken hat.

Tonight he is going to winnow barley on the threshing-floor. So bathe and anoint yourself and put on your best clothes and go down to the threshing-floor. But do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking.

4 Wenn er sich dann leget, so merke den Ort, da er sich hinlegt; und komm und decke auf zu seinen Füßen und lege dich, so wird er dir wohl sagen, was du tun sollst.

Then when he lies down, mark the place where he lies. Go in, uncover his feet, lie down, and then he will tell you what to do.”

5 Sie sprach zu ihr: Alles was du mir sagest, will ich tun.

“I will do as you say.” Ruth said to her.

6 Sie ging hinab zur Tenne und tat alles, wie ihre Schwieger geboten hatte.

So she went down to the threshing-floor and did just as her mother-in-law told her.

7 Und da Boas gegessen und getrunken hatte, ward sein Herz guter Dinge; und kam und legte sich hinter eine Mandel. Und sie kam leise und deckte auf zu seinen Füßen und legte sich.

When Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in a happy mood, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain. Then Ruth came quietly and uncovered his feet and lay down.

8 Da es nun Mitternacht ward, erschrak der Mann und erschütterte; und siehe, ein Weib lag zu seinen Füßen.

At midnight the man was startled and turned over, and there was a woman lying at his feet!

9 Und er sprach: Wer bist du? Sie antwortete: Ich bin Ruth, deine Magd. Breite deinen Flügel über deine Magd, denn du bist der Erbe.

“Who are you?” he said. “I am Ruth your servant,” she answered, “Spread your cloak over your servant, for you are a near relative.”

10 Er aber sprach: Gesegnet seiest du dem HERRN, meine Tochter! Du hast eine bessere Barmherzigkeit hernach getan denn vorhin, daß du nicht bist den Jünglingen nachgegangen, weder reich noch arm.

He said, “May you be blest by the Lord, my daughter. You have shown me greater favor now than at first, for you have not followed young men, whether poor or rich.

11 Nun, meine Tochter, fürchte dich nicht! Alles, was du sagst, will ich dir tun; denn die ganze Stadt meines Volks weiß, daß du ein tugendsam Weib bist.

My daughter, have no fear. I will do for you all that you ask, for the whole town knows that you are a virtuous woman.

12 Nun, es ist wahr, daß ich der Erbe bin; aber es ist einer näher denn ich.

Now it is true that I am a near relative, but there is another man nearer than I.

13 Bleib über Nacht. Morgen, so er dich nimmt, wohl; gelüstet's ihn aber nicht, dich zu nehmen, so will ich dich nehmen, so wahr der HERR lebt. Schlaf bis morgen.

Stay here tonight, and then in the morning, if he will perform for you the duty of a kinsman, well, let him do it. But if he will not perform for you the duty of a kinsman, then as surely as the Lord lives, I will do it for you. Lie down until morning.”

14 Und sie schlief bis morgen zu seinen Füßen. Und sie stund auf, ehe denn einer den andern, kennen mochte; und er gedachte, daß nur niemand inne werde, daß ein Weib in die Tenne kommen sei!

So she lay at his feet until morning, but rose before anyone could recognize her, for Boaz said, “No one must know that a woman came to the threshing-floor.”

15 Und sprach: Lange her den Mantel, den du anhast, und halt ihn zu. Und sie hielt ihn zu. Und er maß sechs Maß Gerste und legte es auf sie. Und er kam in die Stadt.

He also said, “Bring the cloak which you have on and hold it.” So she held it while he poured into it six measures of barley and laid it on her shoulders. Then he went into the city.

16 Sie aber kam zu ihrer Schwieger, die sprach: Wie steht es mit dir, meine Tochter? Und sie sagte ihr alles, was ihr der Mann getan hatte,

When Ruth came to her mother-in-law, Naomi asked, “Is it you, my daughter?” Then Ruth told Naomi all that the man had done for her.

17 und sprach: Diese sechs Maß Gerste gab er mir, denn er sprach: Du sollst nicht leer zu deiner Schwieger kommen.

“He gave me these six measures of barley,” she said, “for he said I should not go to my mother-in-law empty-handed.”

18 Sie aber sprach: Sei stille, meine Tochter, bis du erfährest, wo es hinaus will; denn der Mann wird nicht ruhen, er bringe es denn heute zu Ende.

“Wait quietly, my daughter.” Naomi said, “Until you know how the affair will turn out, for the man will not rest unless he settles it all today.”
