1 Dies sind die Worte Agurs, des Sohns Jakes, Lehre und Rede des Mannes Leithiel, Leithiel und Uchal.
The words of Agur, son of Jakeh, [even] the oracle, —The utterance of the man, for Ithiel, for Ithiel and Ucal.
2 Denn ich bin der allernärrischste, und Menschenverstand ist nicht bei mir.
Surely, more brutish, am, I, than any man, nor doth, the understanding of a son of earth, pertain to me;
3 Ich habe Weisheit nicht gelernet, und was heilig sei, weiß ich nicht.
Neither have I learned wisdom, nor, the knowledge of the Holy Ones, can I acquire.
4 Wer fähret hinauf gen Himmel und herab? Wer fasset den Wind in seine Hände? Wer bindet die Wasser in ein Kleid? Wer hat alle Enden der Welt gestellet? Wie heißt er und wie heißt sein Sohn? Weißt du das?
Who hath ascended the heavens and then descended? Who hath gathered the wind into his two hands? Who hath wrapped up the waters in a mantle? Who hath set up all the ends of the earth? What is his name and what the name of his son, when thou knowest?
5 Alle Worte Gottes sind durchläutert und sind ein Schild denen, die auf ihn trauen.
Every saying of God is refined, A shield, is, he, to them who seek refuge in him.
6 Tue nichts zu seinen Worten, daß er dich nicht strafe, und werdest lügenhaftig erfunden.
Do not add unto his words, lest he convict thee, and thou be found false.
7 Zweierlei bitte ich von dir, die wollest du mir nicht weigern, ehe denn ich sterbe;
Two things, have I asked of thee, withhold them not from me, ere yet I die:
8 Abgötterei und Lügen laß ferne von mir sein; Armut und Reichtum gib mir nicht; laß mich aber mein bescheiden Teil Speise dahinnehmen.
Vanity and falsehood, remove far from me, Neither poverty nor riches, give me, Feed me with the food appointed me:
9 Ich möchte sonst, wo ich zu satt würde, verleugnen und sagen: Wer ist der HERR? Oder wo ich zu arm würde, möchte ich stehlen und mich an dem Namen meines Gottes vergreifen.
Lest I be full, and deny, and say—Who is Yahweh? or lest I be impoverished and steal, and do violence to the Name of my God.
10 Verrate den Knecht nicht gegen seinen HERRN; er möchte dir fluchen und du die Schuld tragen müssest.
Do not slander a servant to his master, lest he revile thee, and thou be found guilty.
11 Es ist eine Art, die ihrem Vater flucht und ihre Mutter nicht segnet;
A generation! Its father, it revileth, and, its mother, it doth not bless.
12 eine Art, die sich rein dünkt und ist doch von ihrem Kot nicht gewaschen;
A generation! Pure in its own eyes, yet, from its filth, hath it not been bathed,
13 eine Art, die ihre Augen hoch trägt und ihre Augenlider emporhält;
A generation! How lofty are its eyes, and its eyelashes uplifted.
14 eine Art, die Schwerter für Zähne hat, die mit ihren Backenzähnen frißt und verzehret die Elenden im Lande und die Armen unter den Leuten.
A generation! Swords, are its teeth, and, knives, its incisors, —to devour the humbled out of the earth, and the needy, from among men.
15 Die Igel hat zwo Töchter: Bring her, bring her! Drei Dinge sind nicht zu sättigen, und das vierte spricht nicht: Es ist genug:
The vampire, hath two daughters, Give! Give! Three, there are will not be satisfied, four, have not said, Enough!
16 die Hölle, der Frauen verschlossene Mutter, die Erde wird nicht Wassers satt, und das Feuer spricht nicht: Es ist genug. (Sheol h7585)
Hades, and barrenness, —A land not satisfied with water, and fire, that saith not, Enough! (Sheol h7585)
17 Ein Auge das den Vater verspottet und verachtet, der Mutter zu gehorchen, das müssen die Raben am Bach aushacken und die jungen Adler fressen.
The eye that mocketh a father, and despiseth to obey a mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young of the eagle shall eat it.
18 Drei Dinge sind mir zu wunderlich, und das vierte weiß ich nicht:
Three, things there are, too difficult for me, yea, four, which I do not understand:
19 des Adlers Weg im Himmel, der Schlangen Weg auf einem Felsen, des Schiffs Weg mitten im Meer und eines Mannes Weg an einer Magd.
The way of an eagle in the heavens, the way of a serpent on the rock, —the way of a ship in the heart of the sea, and the way of a man with a maid.
20 Also ist auch der Weg der Ehebrecherin; die verschlinget und wischet ihr Maul und spricht: Ich habe kein Übels getan.
So, is the way of a woman committing adultery, —she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no iniquity!
21 Ein Land wird durch dreierlei unruhig, und das vierte mag es nicht ertragen:
Under three things, a land is stirred, yea, under four, she cannot bear up:
22 ein Knecht, wenn er König wird; ein Narr, wenn er zu satt ist;
Under a servant, when he reigneth, and a base man, when he is surfeited with food;
23 eine Feindselige, wenn sie geehelicht wird, und eine Magd, wenn sie ihrer Frauen Erbe wird.
Under a hateful woman, when she is married, and a handmaid when she driveth out her mistress.
24 Vier sind klein auf Erden und klüger denn die Weisen:
Four, things there are, the small of the earth, —yet, they, are wiser than the wise:
25 die Ameisen, ein schwach Volk, dennoch schaffen sie im Sommer ihre Speise;
The ants, a people, not strong, —yet prepare they, in summer, their food;
26 Kaninchen, ein schwach Volk, dennoch legt es sein Haus in den Felsen;
The conies, a people of, no power, yet set they, among the crags, their house;
27 Heuschrecken haben, keinen König, dennoch ziehen sie aus ganz mit Haufen;
King, is there none, to, the locusts, —yet go forth in swarms, do they all;
28 die Spinne wirkt mit ihren Händen und ist in der Könige Schlössern.
The lizard, with hands, reneweth its hold, —yet, the same, is in the palaces of the king.
29 Dreierlei haben einen feinen Gang, und das vierte gehet wohl:
Three, things there are which step along well, ye, four, which excel in going:
30 Der Löwe, mächtig unter den Tieren, und kehrt nicht um vor jemand;
The lion, hero among beasts, which turneth aside from the face of no one;
31 ein Wind von guten Lenden; und ein Widder; und der König, wider den sich niemand darf legen.
The greyhound, or the he-goat, —and a king, having a band of soldiers with him.
32 Hast du genarret und zu hoch gefahren und Böses vorgehabt, so lege die Hand aufs Maul.
If thou hast acted basely by lifting thyself up, —if thou hast plotted evil, [put thy] hand to [thy] mouth!
33 Wenn man Milch stößt, so macht man Butter draus; und wer die Nase hart schneuzet, zwingt Blut heraus; und wer den Zorn reizet, zwingt Hader heraus.
Surely, the pressing of milk, bringeth forth curd, and, the pressing of the nose, bringeth forth blood, and, the pressing of wrath, bringeth forth strife.
