1 Rühme dich nicht des morgenden Tages; denn du weißest nicht, was heute sich begeben mag.
Boast not thyself of to-morrow; For thou knowest not what a day may bring forth!
2 Laß dich einen andern loben und nicht deinen Mund, einen Fremden und nicht deine eigenen Lippen.
Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; A stranger, and not thine own lips.
3 Stein ist schwer und Sand ist Last; aber des Narren Zorn ist schwerer denn die beiden.
A stone is heavy and sand is weighty; But a fool's wrath is heavier than both.
4 Zorn ist ein wütig Ding, und Grimm ist ungestüm; und wer kann vor dem Neid bestehen?
Wrath is cruel, and anger overwhelming; But who is able to stand before jealousy?
5 Öffentliche Strafe ist besser denn heimliche Liebe.
Better is open rebuke Than love kept concealed.
6 Die Schläge des Liebhabers meinen's recht gut; aber das Küssen des Hassers ist ein Gewäsch.
Faithful are the wounds of a friend; But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
7 Eine volle Seele zertritt wohl Honigseim; aber einer hungrigen Seele ist alles Bittre süß.
He who is fed to the full loatheth the honeycomb; But to the hungry any bitter thing is sweet.
8 Wie ein Vogel ist, der aus seinem Nest weicht, also ist, der von seiner Stätte weicht.
As a bird that wandereth from its nest, So is a man who wandereth from his place.
9 Das Herz freuet sich der Salbe und Räuchwerk; aber ein Freund ist lieblich um Rats willen der Seele.
Oil and perfume gladden the heart; Sweet also is one's friend by hearty counsel.
10 Deinen Freund und deines Vaters Freund verlaß nicht. Und gehe nicht ins Haus deines Bruders, wenn dir's übel gehet; denn ein Nachbar ist besser in der Nähe weder ein Bruder in der Ferne.
Thine own friend and thy father's friend forsake not; And go not into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity. Better is a neighbor that is near, than a brother far off.
11 Sei weise, mein Sohn, so freuet sich mein Herz, so will ich antworten dem, der mich schmähet.
Be wise, my son, and make my heart glad, That I may give an answer to him that reproacheth me.
12 Ein Witziger siehet das Unglück und verbirgt sich; aber die Albernen gehen durch und leiden Schaden.
A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; The simple pass on, and are punished.
13 Nimm dem sein Kleid der für einen andern Bürge wird, und pfände ihn um der Fremden willen.
Take his garment who is surety for another; Yea, take a pledge of him who is bound for a stranger.
14 Wer seinen Nächsten mit lauter Stimme segnet und früh aufstehet, das wird ihm für einen Fluch geredet.
He who blesseth his neighbor with a loud voice, rising early for it, It shall be accounted to him as a curse.
15 Ein zänkisch Weib und stetiges Triefen, wenn's sehr regnet, werden wohl miteinander verglichen.
A continual dropping in a very rainy day And a quarrelsome wife are alike.
16 Wer sie aufhält, der hält den Wind und will das Öl mit der Hand fassen.
He who restraineth her restraineth the wind; And his right hand layeth hold of oil.
17 Ein Messer wetzt das andere und ein Mann den andern.
Iron sharpeneth iron; So one man sharpeneth the face of another.
18 Wer seinen Feigenbaum bewahret, der isset Früchte davon; und wer seinen HERRN bewahret, wird geehret.
He that watcheth the fig-tree shall eat its fruit; So he that is careful for his master shall come to honor.
19 Wie der Schemen im Wasser ist gegen das Angesicht, also ist eines Menschen Herz gegen den andern.
As in water face answereth to face, So doth the heart of man to man.
20 Hölle und Verderbnis werden nimmer voll, und der Menschen Augen sind auch unsättig. (Sheol h7585)
The realms of the dead are never full; So the eyes of man are never satisfied. (Sheol h7585)
21 Ein Mann wird durch den Mund des Lobers bewähret wie das Silber im Tiegel und das Gold im Ofen.
The refining-pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; So let a man be to the mouth that giveth him praise.
22 Wenn du den Narren im Mörser zerstießest mit dem Stämpfel wie Grütze, so ließe doch seine Narrheit nicht von ihm.
Though thou shouldst beat a fool in a mortar, Among bruised wheat, with a pestle, Yet will not his folly depart from him.
23 Auf deine Schafe hab acht und nimm dich deiner Herde an;
Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, And look well to thy herds!
24 denn Gut währet nicht ewiglich, und die Krone währet nicht für und für.
For riches last not for ever; Not even a crown endureth from generation to generation.
25 Das Heu ist aufgegangen und ist da das Gras, und wird Kraut auf den Bergen gesammelt.
The hay disappeareth, and the tender grass showeth itself, And the herbage of the mountains is gathered in.
26 Die Lämmer kleiden dich, und die Böcke geben dir das Ackergeld.
The lambs are thy clothing, And the goats the price of thy field.
27 Du hast Ziegenmilch genug zur Speise deines Hauses und zur Nahrung deiner Dirnen.
There is goat's milk enough for thy food, For the food of thy household, And for the sustenance of thy maidens.
