1 Wenn du sitzest und issest mit einem HERRN, so merke, wen du vor dir hast,
When you sit down for a meal with a ruler, look carefully at what is placed before you,
2 und setze ein Messer an deine Kehle, willst du das Leben behalten.
and cut down if you have a big appetite.
3 Wünsche dir nicht seiner Speise, denn es ist falsch Brot.
Don't be greedy for his fancy food, for it's offered with deceptive motives.
4 Bemühe dich nicht, reich zu werden, und laß ab von deinen Fündlein!
Don't wear yourself out trying to get rich—be wise enough not to bother!
5 Laß deine Augen nicht fliegen dahin, das du nicht haben kannst; denn dasselbe macht ihm Flügel wie ein Adler und fleugt gen Himmel.
It disappears in the blink of an eye, suddenly growing wings and flying off into the sky like an eagle.
6 Iß nicht Brot bei einem Neidischen und wünsche dir seiner Speise nicht.
Don't accept meal invitations from miserly people; don't be greedy for their fancy food,
7 Denn wie ein Gespenst ist er inwendig. Er spricht: Iß und trink! und sein Herz ist doch nicht an dir.
for what they're thinking inside is what they really are. They say, “Come on, eat and drink!”—but in their minds they don't really care about you.
8 Deine Bissen, die du gegessen hattest mußt du ausspeien und mußt deine freundlichen Worte verloren haben.
You'll vomit up the little pieces you've eaten, and your kind words of appreciation will be wasted.
9 Rede nicht vor des Narren Ohren; denn er verachtet die Klugheit deiner Rede.
Don't talk to stupid people because they'll ridicule your wise words.
10 Treibe nicht zurück die vorigen Grenzen und gehe nicht auf der Waisen Acker!
Don't move ancient boundary markers, and don't encroach on fields belonging to orphans,
11 Denn ihr Erlöser ist mächtig; der wird ihre Sache wider dich ausführen.
for their Protector is powerful and he will plead their case against you.
12 Gib dein Herz zur Zucht und deine Ohren zu vernünftiger Rede.
Focus your mind on instruction; listen intently to words of knowledge.
13 Laß nicht ab, den Knaben zu züchtigen; denn wo du ihn mit der Rute hauest, so darf man ihn nicht töten.
Don't keep from disciplining your children—a beating won't kill them.

15 Mein Sohn, so du weise bist, so freuet sich auch mein Herz;
My son, if you think wisely then I'll be happy;
16 und meine Nieren sind froh, wenn deine Lippen reden, was recht ist.
I'll be delighted when you say what's right.
17 Dein Herz folge nicht den Sündern, sondern sei täglich in der Furcht des HERRN.
Don't think enviously of sinners, but always remember to honor the Lord,
18 Denn es wird dir hernach gut sein und dein Warten wird nicht fehlen.
for there's definitely a future for you, and your hope will not be crushed.
19 Höre, mein Sohn, und sei weise und richte dein Herz in den Weg.
Pay attention, my son, and be wise; make sure your mind concentrates on following the right way.
20 Sei nicht unter den Säufern und Schlemmern;
Don't join in with people who drink too much wine or who stuff themselves with meat.
21 denn die Säufer und Schlemmer verarmen, und ein Schläfer muß zerrissene Kleider tragen.
For people who get drunk and overeat lose all they've got, and they spend so much time dozing that all they have left to wear is rags.
22 Gehorche deinem Vater, der dich gezeugt hat, und verachte deine Mutter nicht, wenn sie alt wird!
Pay attention to your father, and don't disregard your mother when she's old.
23 Kaufe Wahrheit und verkaufe sie nicht, Weisheit, Zucht und Verstand.
Invest in truth—and don't sell it! Invest in wisdom, instruction, and understanding.
24 Ein Vater des Gerechten freuet sich, und wer einen Weisen gezeugt hat, ist fröhlich darüber.
Children who do right make their fathers very happy; a wise son brings joy to his father.
25 Laß sich deinen Vater und deine Mutter freuen und fröhlich sein, die dich gezeuget hat.
Make your father and mother happy; bring joy to her who gave birth to you.
26 Gib mir, mein Sohn, dein Herz und laß deinen Augen meine Wege wohlgefallen.
My son, give me your undivided attention, and cheerfully follow my example.
27 Denn eine Hure ist eine tiefe Grube, und die Ehebrecherin ist eine enge Grube.
A prostitute is like being trapped in a pit; an immoral woman is like getting stuck a narrow well,
28 Auch lauert sie wie ein Räuber und die Frechen unter den Menschen sammelt sie zu sich.
Like a robber, she lies in wait ready to ambush men and make more of them unfaithful to their wives.
29 Wo ist Weh? Wo ist Leid? Wo ist Zank? Wo ist Klagen? Wo sind Wunden ohne Ursache? Wo sind rote Augen?
Who's in trouble? Who's in pain? Who's arguing? Who's complaining? Who's injured for no reason? Who's got bloodshot eyes?
30 Nämlich, wo man beim Wein liegt und kommt auszusaufen, was eingeschenkt ist.
—those who spend a long time drinking wine, those who are always trying some new cocktail.
31 Siehe den Wein nicht an, daß er so rot ist und im Glase so schön stehet. Er gehet glatt ein;
Don't let the look of wine tempt you—how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup, how smooth it feels as it goes down.
32 aber danach beißt er wie eine Schlange und sticht wie eine Otter.
In the end it bites like a serpent, it stings like a snake.
33 So werden deine Augen nach andern Weibern sehen, und dein Herz wird verkehrte Dinge reden,
You'll hallucinate, seeing strange things, and your confused mind will make you say all kinds of craziness.
34 und wirst sein wie einer, der mitten im Meer schläft, und wie einer schläft oben auf dem Mastbaum.
You'll stumble around like you're on the rolling ocean, you'll be tossed about like someone lying down at the top of a ship's mast, saying,
35 Sie schlagen mich, aber es tut mir nicht weh; sie klopfen mich, aber ich fühle es nicht. Wann will ich aufwachen, daß ich's mehr treibe?
