Matthaeus 3
1 Zu der Zeit kam Johannes der Täufer und predigte in der Wüste des jüdischen Landes
In those days came John the Baptist preaching in the desert of Judea;
2 und sprach: Tut Buße; das Himmelreich ist nahe herbeikommen!
"Repent," said he, "for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
3 Und er ist der, von dem der Prophet Jesaja gesagt hat und gesprochen: Es ist eine Stimme eines Predigers in der Wüste: Bereitet dem HERRN den Weg und machet richtig seine Steige!
This Johnit was of whom it was said through Isaiah, the prophet, The voice of one who cries aloud in the desert, "Prepare a way for the Lord, Make the paths straight for him."
4 Er aber, Johannes, hatte ein Kleid von Kamelhaaren und einen ledernen Gürtel um seine Lenden; seine Speise aber war Heuschrecken und wilder Honig.
This Johnwore a garment of camel’s hair, and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.
5 Da ging zu ihm hinaus die Stadt Jerusalem und das ganze jüdische Land und alle Länder an dem Jordan
Then Jerusalem began to go out to him, and all Judea, and the whole neighborhood of the Jordan,
6 und ließen sich taufen von ihm im Jordan und bekannten ihre Sünden.
and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
7 Da er nun viel Pharisäer und Sadduzäer sah zu seiner Taufe kommen, sprach er zu ihnen: Ihr Otterngezüchte, wer hat denn euch geweiset, daß ihr dem künftigen Zorn entrinnen werdet?
But when Johnsaw that many of the Pharisees and Sadducees were coming for baptism, he said. "O brood of vipers! Who has warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Sehet zu, tut rechtschaffene Früchte der Buße!
Then bring forth fruit worthy of repentance.
9 Denket nur nicht, daß ihr bei euch wollt sagen: Wir haben Abraham zum Vater. Ich sage euch: Gott vermag dem Abraham aus diesen Steinen Kinder zu erwecken.
And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father’-I tell you that out of these very stones God is able to raise up descendants for Abraham.
10 Es ist schon die Axt den Bäumen an die Wurzel gelegt. Darum, welcher Baum nicht gute Früchte bringet, wird abgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen.
And already the axe is lying at the roots of the trees. Any tree, therefore, that does not bear good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire.
11 Ich taufe euch mit Wasser zur Buße; der aber nach mir kommt, ist stärker denn ich, dem ich auch nicht genugsam bin, seine Schuhe zu tragen; der wird euch mit dem Heiligen Geist und mit Feuer taufen.
I indeed am baptizing you in water, unto repentance; but One is coming after me, mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire.
12 Und er hat seine Worfschaufel in der Hand; er wird seine Tenne fegen und den Weizen in seine Scheune sammeln; aber die Spreu wird er verbrennen mit ewigem Feuer
His winnowing-fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse the threshing-floor. He will store his wheat in the granary, but will burn up the chaff in unquenchable fire."
13 Zu der Zeit kam Jesus aus Galiläa an den Jordan zu Johannes, daß er sich von ihm taufen ließe.
At that very time Jesus was on his way from Galilee to the Jordan, to John, to be baptized by him.
14 Aber Johannes wehrete ihm und sprach: Ich bedarf wohl, daß ich von dir getauft werde, und du kommest zu mir?
But he tried to prevent him. "It is I," he said, "who need to be baptized by you, and are you coming to me?"
15 Jesus aber antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Laß jetzt also sein; also gebührt es uns, alle Gerechtigkeit zu erfüllen. Da ließ er's ihm zu.
But Jesus answered, "Permit it now, for so it is fitting for us to fulfill every religious duty."
16 Und da Jesus getauft war, stieg er bald herauf aus dem Wasser; und siehe, da tat sich der Himmel auf über ihm. Und Johannes sah den Geist Gottes gleich als eine Taube herabfahren und über ihn kommen.
Then he consented. And after Jesus was baptized, as soon as he rose out of the water, lo! the heavens opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon him,
17 Und siehe, eine Stimme vom Himmel herab sprach: Dies ist mein lieber Sohn, an welchem ich Wohlgefallen habe.
while a voice from heaven said, "This is my son, the beloved, In whom I delight."
