Josua 17

1 Und das Los fiel dem Stamm Manasse, denn er ist Josephs erster Sohn, und fiel auf Machir, den ersten Sohn Manasses, den Vater Gileads, denn er war ein streitbarer Mann; darum ward ihm Gilead und Basan.

This was the lot for the tribe of Manasseh, for he was the firstborn of Joseph. As for Makir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gilead and Bashan.

2 Den andern Kindern aber Manasses und ihren Geschlechtern fiel es auch, nämlich den Kindern Abiesers, den Kindern Heleks, den Kindern Asriels, den Kindern Sechems, den Kindern Hephers und den Kindern Semidas. Das sind die Kinder Manasses, des Sohns Josephs, Mannsbilder unter ihren Geschlechtern.

So this was for the rest of the descendants of Manasseh according to their families: for the descendants of Abiezer, for the descendants of Helek, for the descendants of Asriel, for the descendants of Shechem, for the descendants of Hepher, and for the descendants of Shemida: these were the male descendants of Manasseh the son of Joseph according to their families.

3 Aber Zelaphehad, der Sohn Hephers, des Sohns Gileads, des Sohns Machirs, des Sohns Manasses, hatte keine Söhne, sondern Töchter; und ihre Namen sind diese: Mahela, Noa, Hagla, Milka, Thirza.

But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters: and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

4 Und traten vor den Priester Eleasar und vor Josua, den Sohn Nuns, und vor die Obersten und sprachen: Der HERR hat Mose geboten, daß er uns sollte Erbteil geben unter unsern Brüdern. Und man gab ihnen Erbteil unter den Brüdern ihres Vaters nach dem Befehl des HERRN.

They came near before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the leaders, saying, "YHWH commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers." Therefore according to the commandment of YHWH he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father.

5 Es fielen aber auf Manasse zehn Schnüre außer dem Lande Gilead und Basan, das jenseit des Jordans liegt.

Ten parts fell to Manasseh, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is beyond the Jordan;

6 Denn die Töchter Manasses nehmen Erbteil unter seinen Söhnen, und das Land Gilead ward den andern Kindern Manasses.

because the daughters of Manasseh had an inheritance among his sons. The land of Gilead belonged to the rest of the sons of Manasseh.

7 Und die Grenze Manasses war von Asser an gen Michmethath, die vor Sechem lieget, und langet zur Rechten an die von En-Thapuah.

The border of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethath, which is before Shechem. The border went along to the right hand to Jashub and to En Tappuah.

8 Denn das Land Thapuah ward Manasse; und ist die Grenze Manasses an die Kinder Ephraim.

The land of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh; but Tappuah, on the border of Manasseh, belonged to the descendants of Ephraim.

9 Danach kommt sie herab gen Nahal-Kana gegen mittagwärts zu den Bachstädten, die Ephraims sind, unter den Städten Manasses; aber von Mitternacht ist die Grenze Manasses am Bach und endet sich am Meer,

The border went down to Wadi Kanah, southward of the wadi. These cities belonged to Ephraim among the cities of Manasseh. The border of Manasseh was on the north side of the wadi, and ended at the sea.

10 dem Ephraim gegen Mittag und dem Manasse gegen Mitternacht; und das Meer ist seine Grenze; und soll stoßen an Asser von Mitternacht und an Isaschar von Morgen.

Southward it was Ephraim's, and northward it was Manasseh's, and the sea was his border. They reached to Asher on the north, and to Issachar on the east.

11 So hatte nun Manasse unter Isaschar und Asser Beth-Sean und ihre Töchter, Jeblaam und ihre Töchter und die zu Dor und ihre Töchter und die zu En-Dor und ihre Töchter und die zu Thaanach und ihre Töchter und die zu Megiddo und ihre Töchter und das dritte Teil Napheths.

And Manasseh had in Issachar and in Asher, Beth Shean and its towns, and Ibleam and its towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Endor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; three regions.

12 Und die Kinder Manasse konnten diese Städte nicht einnehmen, sondern die Kanaaniter fingen an zu wohnen in demselbigen Lande.

Yet the descendants of Manasseh couldn't drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

13 Da aber die Kinder Israel mächtig wurden, machten sie die Kanaaniter zinsbar und vertrieben sie nicht.

It happened, when the children of Israel had grown strong, that they put the Canaanites to forced labor, and did not utterly drive them out.

14 Da redeten die Kinder Joseph mit Josua und sprachen: Warum hast du mir nur ein Los und eine Schnur des Erbteils gegeben? Und ich bin doch ein groß Volk, wie mich der HERR so gesegnet hat.

The descendants of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, "Why have you given me just one lot and one part for an inheritance, since I am a great people, because YHWH has blessed me so far?"

15 Da sprach Josua zu ihnen: Weil du ein groß Volk bist; so gehe hinauf in den Wald und haue um daselbst im Lande der Pheresiter und Riesen, weil dir das Gebirge Ephraim zu enge ist.

Joshua said to them, "If you are a great people, go up to the forest, and clear land for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the Rephaim; since the hill country of Ephraim is too narrow for you."

16 Da sprachen die Kinder Joseph: Das Gebirge werden wir nicht erlangen; denn es sind eiserne Wagen bei allen Kanaanitern; die im Tal des Landes wohnen, bei welchen liegt Beth-Sean und ihre Töchter und Jesreel im Tal.

The descendants of Joseph said, "The hill country is not enough for us. All the Canaanites who dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both those who are in Beth Shean and its towns, and those who are in the Valley of Jezreel."

17 Josua sprach zum Hause Josephs, zu Ephraim und Manasse: Du bist ein groß Volk, und weil du so groß bist, mußt du nicht ein Los haben,

Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, "You are a great people, and have great power. You shall not have one lot only;

18 sondern das Gebirge soll dein sein, da der Wald ist; den haue um, so wird er deines Loses Ende sein, wenn du die Kanaaniter vertreibest, die eiserne Wagen haben und mächtig sind.

but the hill country shall be yours. Although it is a forest, you shall cut it down, and its farthest extent shall be yours; for you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have chariots of iron, and though they are strong."
