Johannes 9
1 Und Jesus ging vorüber und sah einen, der blind geboren war.
As Jesus was passing by, he saw a man born blind.
2 Und seine Jünger fragten ihn und sprachen: Meister, wer hat gesündiget, dieser oder seine Eltern, daß er ist blind geboren?
His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, why was this man born blind? Was it him who sinned, or was it his parents?”
3 Jesus antwortete: Es hat weder dieser gesündiget noch seine Eltern, sondern daß die Werke Gottes offenbar würden an ihm.
Jesus replied, “It wasn't because the man or his parents sinned. But so that what God can do may be shown in his life,
4 Ich muß Wirken die Werke des, der mich gesandt hat, solange es Tag ist; es kommt die Nacht, da niemand wirken kann.
we have to keep on doing the work of the one who sent me as long as it is still daytime. The night is coming when no one can work.
5 Dieweil ich bin in der Welt, bin ich das Licht der Welt.
While I'm here in the world I am the light of the world.”
6 Da er solches gesagt, spützete er auf die Erde und machte einen Kot aus dem Speichel und schmierete den Kot auf des Blinden Augen
After he'd said this, Jesus spat on the ground and made some mud with the saliva which he put on the man's eyes.
7 und sprach zu ihm: Gehe hin zu dem Teich Siloah (das ist verdolmetschet: gesandt) und wasche dich. Da ging er hin und wusch sich und kam sehend.
Then Jesus told him, “Go and wash in the Pool of Siloam” (which means “sent”). So the man went and washed, and when he went home he could see.
8 Die Nachbarn, und die ihn zuvor gesehen hatten, daß er ein Bettler war, sprachen: Ist dieser nicht, der da saß und bettelte?
His neighbors and those who had known him as a beggar, asked, “Isn't this the man who used to sit and beg?”
9 Etliche sprachen: Er ist's; etliche aber: Er ist ihm ähnlich. Er selbst aber sprach: Ich bin's.
Some said he was, while others said “no, it's just someone who looks like him.” But the man kept saying, “It is me!”
10 Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Wie sind deine Augen aufgetan?
“So how is it you can see?” they asked him.
11 Er antwortete und sprach: Der Mensch, der Jesus heißet, machte einen Kot und schmierete meine Augen und sprach: Gehe hin zu dem Teich Siloah und wasche dich. Ich ging hin und wusch mich und ward sehend.
He replied, “A man called Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes and told me, ‘Go and wash yourself in the Pool of Siloam.’ So I went and washed, and now I can see.”
12 Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Wo ist derselbige? Er sprach: Ich weiß nicht.
“Where is he?” they asked. “I don't know,” he replied.
13 Da führeten sie ihn zu den Pharisäern, der weiland blind war.
They took the man who had been blind to the Pharisees.
14 (Es war aber Sabbat, da Jesus den Kot machte und seine Augen öffnete.)
Now it was the Sabbath when Jesus had made the mud and opened the blind man's eyes.
15 Da fragten sie ihn abermal, auch die Pharisäer, wie er wäre sehend worden. Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Kot legte er mir auf die Augen, und ich wusch mich und bin nun sehend.
So the Pharisees also asked him how he could see. He told them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and now I can see.”
16 Da sprachen etliche der Pharisäer: Der Mensch ist nicht von Gott, dieweil er den Sabbat nicht hält. Die andern aber sprachen: Wie kann ein sündiger Mensch solche Zeichen tun? Und es ward eine Zwietracht unter ihnen.
Some of the Pharisees said, “The man who did this can't be from God because he doesn't keep the Sabbath.” But others wondered, “How could a sinner do such miracles?” So they were divided in their opinion.
17 Sie sprachen wieder zu dem Blinden: Was sagest du von ihm, daß er hat deine Augen aufgetan? Er aber sprach: Er ist ein Prophet.
So they went on questioning the man. “What's your opinion about him, then, since it's your eyes he opened,” they asked. “He's surely a prophet,” the man replied.
18 Die Juden glaubten nicht von ihm, daß er blind gewesen und sehend worden wäre, bis daß sie riefen die Eltern des, der sehend war worden,
The Jewish leaders still refused to believe that the man who had been blind could now see until they had called in the man's parents.
19 fragten sie und sprachen: Ist das euer Sohn, von welchem ihr saget, er sei blind geboren? Wie ist er denn nun sehend?
They asked them, “Is this your son whom you say was born blind? So how is it that now he can see?”
20 Seine Eltern antworteten ihnen und sprachen: Wir wissen, daß dieser unser Sohn ist, und daß er blind geboren ist.
His parents answered, “We know this is our son who was born blind.
21 Wie er aber nun sehend ist, wissen wir nicht; oder wer ihm hat seine Augen aufgetan, wissen wir auch nicht. Er ist alt genug, fraget ihn; lasset ihn selbst für sich reden.
But we've no idea how he can see now, or who healed him. Why don't you ask him, he's old enough. He can speak for himself.”
22 Solches sagten seine Eltern; denn sie fürchteten sich vor den Juden. Denn die Juden hatten sich schon vereiniget, so jemand ihn für Christum bekennete, daß derselbe in Bann getan würde.
The reason his parents said this was because they were afraid of what the Jewish leaders would do. The Jewish leaders had already announced that anyone who declared that Jesus was the Messiah would be thrown out of the synagogue.
23 Darum sprachen seine Eltern: Er ist alt genug, fraget ihn.
That was why his parents said, “Ask him, he's old enough.”
24 Da riefen sie zum andernmal den Menschen, der blind gewesen war, und sprachen zu ihm: Gib Gott die Ehre! Wir wissen, daß dieser Mensch ein Sünder ist.
Once more they called in the man who had been blind, and told him, “Give God the glory! We know this man is a sinner.”
25 Er antwortete und sprach: Ist er ein Sünder, das weiß ich nicht; eines weiß ich wohl, daß ich blind war und bin nun sehend.
The man replied, “Whether he's a sinner or not, I don't know. All I know is that I was blind and now I can see.”
26 Da sprachen sie wieder zu ihm: Was tat er dir? Wie tat er deine Augen auf?
Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
27 Er antwortete ihnen: Ich hab's euch jetzt gesagt; habt ihr's nicht gehöret? Was wollt ihr's abermal hören? Wollt ihr auch seine Jünger werden?
The man replied, “I already told you. Weren't you listening? Why do you want to hear it again? You don't want to become his disciples too, do you?”
28 Da fluchten sie ihm und sprachen: Du bist sein Jünger; wir aber sind Mose's Jünger.
They shouted abuse at him, and said, “You're that man's disciple.
29 Wir wissen, daß Gott mit Mose geredet hat; diesen aber wissen wir nicht, von wannen er ist.
We're disciples of Moses. We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this person, we don't even know where he comes from.”
30 Der Mensch antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Das ist ein wunderlich Ding, daß ihr nicht wisset, von wannen er sei; und er hat meine Augen aufgetan!
The man answered, “That's incredible! You don't know where he comes from but he opened my eyes.
31 Wir wissen aber, daß Gott die Sünder nicht höret, sondern so jemand gottesfürchtig ist und tut seinen Willen, den höret er.
We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but he does listen to anyone who worships him and does what he wants.
32 Von der Welt an ist's nicht erhöret, daß jemand einem gebornen Blinden die Augen aufgetan habe. (aiōn g165)
Never before in the whole of history has anyone heard of a man born blind being healed. (aiōn g165)
33 Wäre dieser nicht von Gott, er könnte nichts tun.
If this man weren't from God, he could do nothing.”
34 Sie antworteten und sprachen zu ihm: Du bist ganz in Sünden geboren und lehrest uns? Und stießen ihn hinaus.
“You were born totally sinful, and yet you're trying to lecture us,” they replied. And they threw him out of the synagogue.
35 Es kam vor Jesum, daß sie ihn ausgestoßen hatten. Und da er ihn fand, sprach er zu ihm: Glaubest du an den Sohn Gottes?
When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, he went and found the man, and asked him, “Do you trust in the Son of man?”
36 Er antwortete und sprach: HERR, welcher ist's, auf daß ich an ihn glaube?
The man replied, “Tell me who he is, sir, so I can put my trust in him.”
37 Jesus sprach zu ihm: Du hast ihn gesehen, und der mit dir redet, der ist's.
“You've already seen him. He's the one speaking with you now!” Jesus told him.
38 Er aber sprach: HERR, ich glaube; und betete ihn an.
“I trust you, Lord!” he said, and he kneeled in worship before Jesus.
39 Und Jesus sprach: Ich bin zum Gerichte auf diese Welt kommen, auf daß, die da nicht sehen, sehend werden, und die da sehen, blind werden.
Then Jesus told him, “I've come into the world to bring judgment so that those who are blind may see, and those who see will become blind.”
40 Und solches höreten etliche der Pharisäer, die bei ihm waren, und sprachen zu ihm: Sind wir denn auch blind?
Some Pharisees who were there with Jesus asked him, “We're not blind too, are we?”
41 Jesus sprach zu ihnen: Wäret ihr blind, so hättet ihr keine Sünde; nun ihr aber sprechet: Wir sind sehend, bleibet eure Sünde.
Jesus answered, “If you were blind, you wouldn't be guilty. But now that you say you see, your guilt remains.”
