Johannes 18
1 Da Jesus solches geredet hatte, ging er hinaus mit seinen Jüngern über den Bach Kidron. Da war ein Garten, darein ging Jesus und seine Jünger.
After saying these things, Jesus went out with his disciples across the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, which he entered along with his disciples.
2 Judas aber, der ihn verriet, wußte den Ort auch; denn Jesus versammelte sich oft daselbst mit seinen Jüngern.
Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.
3 Da nun Judas zu sich hatte genommen die Schar und der Hohenpriester und Pharisäer Diener, kommt er dahin mit Fackeln, Lampen und mit Waffen.
So Judas took a cohort of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, and they went there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
4 Als nun Jesus wußte alles, was ihm begegnen sollte, ging er hinaus und sprach zu ihnen: Wen suchet ihr?
Then Jesus, knowing everything that would happen to him, went out and said to them, “Who are you looking for?”
5 Sie antworteten ihm: Jesum von Nazareth. Jesus spricht zu ihnen: Ich bin's. Judas aber, der ihn verriet, stund auch bei ihnen.
They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” (Judas, who betrayed him, was also standing with them.)
6 Als nun Jesus zu ihnen sprach: Ich bin's, wichen sie zurück und fielen zu Boden.
When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Da fragte er sie abermal: Wen suchet ihr? Sie aber sprachen: Jesum von Nazareth.
So again he asked them, “Who are you looking for?” They said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
8 Jesus antwortete: Ich hab's euch gesagt, daß ich es sei. Suchet ihr denn mich, so lasset diese gehen
Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So if you are looking for me, let these men go.”
9 (auf daß das Wort erfüllet würde, welches er sagte: Ich habe der keinen verloren, die du mir gegeben hast).
He said this to fulfill the word he had spoken: “I have not lost a single one of those yoʋ have given me.”
10 Da hatte Simon Petrus ein Schwert und zog es aus und schlug nach des Hohenpriesters Knecht und hieb ihm sein rechtes Ohr ab; und der Knecht hieß Malchus.
Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.)
11 Da sprach Jesus zu Petrus: Stecke dein Schwert in die Scheide! Soll ich den Kelch nicht trinken, den mir mein Vater gegeben hat?
But Jesus said to Peter, “Put yoʋr sword back in its sheath; shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”
12 Die Schar aber und der Oberhauptmann und die Diener der Juden nahmen Jesum und banden ihn
Then the cohort of soldiers, along with its commander and the Jewish officers, arrested Jesus, bound him,
13 und führeten ihn aufs erste zu Hannas; der war des Kaiphas Schwäher, welcher des Jahrs Hoherpriester war.
and led him away first to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
14 Es war aber Kaiphas, der den Juden riet, es wäre gut, daß ein Mensch würde umgebracht für das Volk.
(It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it was better for one man to perish for the people.)
15 Simon Petrus aber folgte Jesu nach und ein anderer Jünger. Derselbige Jünger war dem Hohenpriester bekannt und ging mit Jesu hinein in des Hohenpriesters Palast.
Now Simon Peter was following Jesus, as was the other disciple. That disciple was known to the high priest, so he went with Jesus into the high priest's courtyard,
16 Petrus aber stund draußen vor der Tür. Da ging der andere Jünger, der dem Hohenpriester bekannt war, hinaus und redete mit der Türhüterin und führete Petrus hinein.
but Peter stood outside at the gate. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out, spoke to the gatekeeper, and brought Peter in.
17 Da sprach die Magd, die Türhüterin zu Petrus: Bist du nicht auch dieses Menschen Jünger einer? Er sprach: Ich bin's nicht.
Then the servant girl who was the gatekeeper said to Peter, “Yoʋ are not also one of this man's disciples, are yoʋ?” He said, “I am not.”
18 Es stunden aber die Knechte und Diener und hatten ein Kohlenfeuer gemacht (denn es war kalt) und wärmeten sich. Petrus aber stund bei ihnen und wärmete sich.
(Now the servants and the officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing there warming themselves. Peter was also standing with them, warming himself.)
19 Aber der Hohepriester fragte Jesum um seine Jünger und um seine Lehre.
Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
20 Jesus antwortete ihm: Ich habe frei öffentlich geredet vor der Welt. Ich habe allezeit gelehret in der Schule und in dem Tempel, da alle Juden zusammenkommen, und habe nichts im Verborgenen geredet.
Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in the synagogues and in the temple courts, where the Jews always assemble together. I have said nothing in secret.
21 Was fragest du mich darum? Frage die darum, die gehöret haben, was ich zu ihnen geredet habe. Siehe, dieselbigen wissen, was ich gesagt habe.
Why do yoʋ question me? Question those who heard what I said to them. Behold, they know what I said.”
22 Als er aber solches redete, gab der Diener einer, die dabeistunden, Jesu einen Backenstreich und sprach: Sollst du dem Hohenpriester also antworten?
When Jesus said this, one of the officers standing nearby slapped him and said, “Is that how yoʋ answer the high priest?”
23 Jesus antwortete: Hab' ich übel geredet, so beweise es, daß es böse sei; habe ich aber recht geredet, was schlägest du mich?
Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify as to what was wrong; but if I have spoken well, why are yoʋ hitting me?”
24 Und Hannas sandte ihn gebunden zu dem Hohenpriester Kaiphas.
Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
25 Simon Petrus aber stund und wärmete sich. Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Bist du nicht seiner Jünger einer? Er verleugnete aber und sprach: Ich bin's nicht.
Meanwhile, Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “Yoʋ are not also one of his disciples, are yoʋ?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”
26 Spricht des Hohenpriesters Knechte einer, ein Gefreundeter des, dem Petrus das Ohr abgehauen hatte: Sah ich dich nicht im Garten bei ihm?
But one of the servants of the high priest, who was a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Did I not see yoʋ with him in the garden?”
27 Da verleugnete Petrus abermal; und alsbald krähete der Hahn.
Peter denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed.
28 Da führeten sie Jesum von Kaiphas vor das Richthaus. Und es war früh. Und sie gingen nicht in das Richthaus, auf daß sie nicht unrein würden, sondern Ostern essen möchten.
Then the Jews led Jesus away from Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters. It was now early in the morning. They themselves did not go into the governor's headquarters so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover.
29 Da ging Pilatus zu ihnen heraus und sprach: Was bringet ihr für Klage wider diesen Menschen?
So Pilate went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”
30 Sie antworteten und sprachen zu ihm: Wäre dieser nicht ein Übeltäter wir hätten dir ihn nicht überantwortet.
They answered him, “If he were not an evildoer, we would not have handed him over to yoʋ.”
31 Da sprach Pilatus zu ihnen: So nehmet ihr ihn hin und richtet ihn nach eurem Gesetz. Da sprachen die Juden zu ihm: Wir dürfen niemand töten
Pilate said to them, “You take him and judge him according to your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.”
32 (auf daß erfüllet würde das Wort Jesu, welches er sagte, da er deutete, welches Todes er sterben würde).
(This happened to fulfill what Jesus had said when he indicated the kind of death he was going to die.)
33 Da ging Pilatus wieder hinein ins Richthaus und rief Jesu und sprach zu ihm: Bist du der Juden König?
Then Pilate went into his headquarters again, called Jesus over, and said to him, “Are yoʋ the king of the Jews?”
34 Jesus antwortete: Redest du das von dir selbst, oder haben's dir andere von mir gesagt?
Jesus answered him, “Do yoʋ say this of yoʋr own accord, or have others spoken to yoʋ about me?”
35 Pilatus antwortete: Bin ich ein Jude? Dein Volk und die Hohenpriester haben dich mir überantwortet; was hast du getan?
Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Yoʋr own nation and the chief priests have handed yoʋ over to me. What have yoʋ done?”
36 Jesus antwortete: Mein Reich ist nicht von dieser Welt. Wäre mein Reich von dieser Welt, meine Diener würden drob kämpfen, daß ich den Juden nicht überantwortet würde; aber nun ist mein Reich nicht von dannen.
Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would be fighting to keep me from being delivered up to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.”
37 Da sprach Pilatus zu ihm: So bist du dennoch ein König? Jesus antwortete: Du sagst es, ich bin ein König. Ich bin dazu geboren und in die Welt kommen, daß ich die Wahrheit zeugen soll. Wer aus der Wahrheit ist, der höret meine Stimme.
Pilate said to him, “So yoʋ are a king?” Jesus answered, “Yoʋ have said yoʋrself that I am a king. The reason I was born and the reason I came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
38 Spricht Pilatus zu ihm: Was ist Wahrheit? Und da er das gesagt, ging er wieder hinaus zu den Juden und spricht zu ihnen: Ich finde keine Schuld an ihm.
Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he said this, he again went out to the Jews and said to them, “I find no fault in him.
39 Ihr habt aber eine Gewohnheit, daß ich euch einen auf Ostern losgebe; wollt ihr nun, daß ich euch der Juden König losgebe?
But you have a custom that I release for you one man at the Passover. So do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?”
40 Da schrieen sie wieder allesamt und sprachen: Nicht diesen, sondern Barabbas. Barabbas aber war ein Mörder.
They all cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” (Now Barabbas was an insurrectionist.)
