Job 22

1 Da antwortete Eliphas von Theman und sprach:

Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said:

2 Was darf Gott eines Starken, und was nützt ihm ein Kluger?

Can a man be profitable unto God? Or can he that is wise be profitable unto Him?

3 Meinest du, daß dem Allmächtigen gefalle, daß du dich so fromm machest? Oder was hilft's ihm, ob du deine Wege gleich ohne Wandel achtest?

Is it any advantage to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? Or is it gain to Him, that thou makest thy ways blameless?

4 Meinest du, er wird sich vor dir fürchten, dich zu strafen, und mit dir vor Gericht treten?

Is it for thy fear of Him that He reproveth thee, that He entereth with thee into judgment?

5 Ja, deine Bosheit ist zu groß, und deiner Missetat ist kein Ende.

Is not thy wickedness great? And are not thine iniquities without end?

6 Du hast etwa deinem Bruder ein Pfand genommen ohne Ursache, du hast den Nackenden die Kleider ausgezogen;

For thou hast taken pledges of thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.

7 du hast die Müden nicht getränket mit Wasser und hast dem Hungrigen dein Brot versagt;

Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.

8 du hast Gewalt im Lande geübet und prächtig drinnen gesessen;

And as a mighty man, who hath the earth, and as a man of rank, who dwelleth in it,

9 die Witwen hast du leer lassen gehen und die Arme der Waisen zerbrochen.

Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

10 Darum bist du mit Stricken umgeben, und Furcht hat dich plötzlich erschrecket.

Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden dread affrighted thee,

11 Solltest du denn nicht die Finsternis sehen, und die Wasserflut dich nicht bedecken?

Or darkness, that thou canst not see, and abundance of waters cover thee.

12 Siehe, Gott ist hoch droben im Himmel und siehet die Sterne droben in der Höhe.

Is not God in the height of heaven? And behold the topmost of the stars, how high they are!

13 Und du sprichst: Was weiß Gott? Sollt er, das im Dunkeln ist, richten können?

And thou sayest: 'What doth God know? Can He judge through the dark cloud?

14 Die Wolken sind seine Vordecke, und siehet nicht, und wandelt im Umgang des Himmels.

Thick clouds are a covering to Him, that He seeth not; and He walketh in the circuit of heaven.'

15 Willst du der Welt Lauf achten, darinnen die Ungerechten gegangen sind,

Wilt thou keep the old way which wicked men have trodden?

16 die vergangen sind, ehe denn es Zeit war, und das Wasser hat ihren Grund weggewaschen,

Who were snatched away before their time, whose foundation was poured out as a stream;

17 die zu Gott sprachen: Heb dich von uns, was sollte der Allmächtige ihnen tun können,

Who said unto God: 'Depart from us'; and what could the Almighty do unto them?

18 so er doch ihr Haus mit Gütern füllete? Aber der Gottlosen Rat sei ferne von mir!

Yet He filled their houses with good things — but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

19 Die Gerechten werden sehen und sich freuen, und der Unschuldige wird ihrer spotten.

The righteous saw it, and were glad, and the innocent laugh them to scorn:

20 Was gilt's, ihr Wesen wird verschwinden und ihr Übriges das Feuer verzehren!

'Surely their substance is cut off, and their abundance the fire hath consumed.'

21 So vertrage dich nun mit ihm und habe Frieden; daraus wird dir viel Gutes kommen.

Acquaint now thyself with Him, and be at peace; thereby shall thine increase be good.

22 Höre das Gesetz von seinem Munde und fasse seine Rede in dein Herz.

Receive, I pray thee, instruction from His mouth, and lay up His words in thy heart.

23 Wirst du dich bekehren zu dem Allmächtigen, so wirst du gebauet werden und Unrecht ferne von deiner Hütte tun,

If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up — if thou put away unrighteousness far from thy tents,

24 so wirst du für Erde Gold geben und für die Felsen güldene Bäche;

And lay thy treasure in the dust, and the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks;

25 und der Allmächtige wird dein Gold sein, und Silber wird dir zugehäuft werden.

And the Almighty be thy treasure, and precious silver unto thee;

26 Dann wirst du deine Lust haben an dem Allmächtigen und dein Antlitz zu Gott aufheben.

Then surely shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.

27 So wirst du ihn bitten, und er wird dich hören; und wirst deine Gelübde bezahlen.

Thou shalt make thy prayer unto Him, and He will hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows;

28 Was du wirst vornehmen, wird er dir lassen gelingen; und das Licht wird auf deinem Wege scheinen.

Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee, and light shall shine upon thy ways.

29 Denn die sich demütigen, die erhöhet er; und wer seine Augen niederschlägt, der wird genesen.

When they cast thee down, thou shalt say: 'There is lifting up'; for the humble person He saveth.

30 Und der Unschuldige wird errettet werden; er wird aber errettet um seiner Hände Reinigkeit willen.

He delivereth him that is innocent, yea, thou shalt be delivered through the cleanness of thy hands.
