Jeremia 9
1 Ach, daß ich Wasser genug hätte in meinem Haupte und meine Augen Tränenquellen wären, daß ich Tag und Nacht beweinen möchte die Erschlagenen in meinem Volk!
How I wish my head was a spring of water, and my eyes a fountain of tears! Then I would weep day and night over all my people who have been killed.
2 Ach, daß ich eine Herberge hätte in der Wüste, so wollte ich mein Volk verlassen und von ihnen ziehen. Denn es sind eitel Ehebrecher und ein frecher Haufe.
I wish I had a temporary shelter in the desert—I would give up on my people and leave them, because they're all adulterers, a bunch of traitors!
3 Sie schießen mit ihren Zungen eitel Lügen und keine Wahrheit und treiben's mit Gewalt im Lande und gehen von einer Bosheit zur andern und achten mich nicht, spricht der HERR.
Their words are like arrows shot from a bow. Lies win out over the truth throughout the country. They go from one evil thing to the next, forgetting all about me, declares the Lord.
4 Ein jeglicher hüte sich vor seinem Freunde und traue auch seinem Bruder nicht; denn ein Bruder unterdrückt den andern, und ein Freund verrät den andern.
Everyone, watch out for your friends! Don't even trust your brother! Every brother is deceitful, and every friend slanders other people.
5 Ein Freund täuscht den andern und reden kein wahr Wort; sie fleißigen sich darauf, wie einer den andern betrüge, und ist ihnen leid, daß sie es nicht ärger machen können.
Everyone betrays their friends; no one tells the truth. They've made themselves into expert liars; they tire themselves out doing wrong.
6 Es ist allenthalben eitel Trügerei unter ihnen, und vor Trügerei wollen sie mich nicht kennen, spricht der HERR.
Everyone exploits each other, and in all their lies they don't want to know me, declares the Lord.
7 Darum spricht der HERR Zebaoth also: Siehe, ich will sie schmelzen und prüfen. Denn was soll ich sonst tun, weil sich mein Volk so zieret?
So this is what the Lord Almighty says: Look, I'm going to test them and purify them like metal in a furnace. What else can I do because of what my people have done?
8 Ihre falschen Zungen sind mörderische Pfeile; mit ihrem Munde reden sie freundlich gegen den Nächsten, aber im Herzen lauern sie auf denselben.
Their words are arrows that kill; they always tell lies. They're nice to their friends on the outside while plotting against them inside.
9 Sollte ich nun solches nicht heimsuchen an ihnen, spricht der HERR, und meine Seele sollte sich nicht rächen an solchem Volk, als dies ist?
Shouldn't I punish them for all this? declares the Lord. Shouldn't I retaliate for what this nation has done?
10 Ich muß auf den Bergen weinen und heulen und bei den Hürden in der Wüste klagen; denn sie sind so gar verheeret, daß niemand da wandelt, und man auch nicht ein Vieh schreien höret. Es ist beides, Vögel des Himmels und das Vieh, alles weg.
I will weep and wail for the mountains, I will sing a funeral song over the pastures in the countryside, because they have been so badly burned that no one can pass through, and there are no cattle to make any noise. The birds have flown and the wild animals have run away.
11 Und ich will Jerusalem zum Steinhaufen und zur Drachenwohnung machen und will die Städte Judas wüste machen, daß niemand drinnen wohnen soll.
I'm going to make Jerusalem into a heap of rubble, a place where jackals live. I will destroy the towns of Judah, leaving them empty.
12 Wer nun weise wäre und ließe ihm zu Herzen gehen und verkündigte, was des HERRN Mund zu ihm sagt, warum das Land verderbet und verheeret wird, wie eine Wüste, da niemand wandelt!
Who is wise enough to understand this? Has the Lord told anyone so they can explain what's happened? Why has the land been destroyed and burned so it's like a desert, so no one can pass through it?
13 Und der HERR sprach: Darum daß sie mein Gesetz verlassen, das ich ihnen vorgegeben habe, und gehorchen meiner Rede nicht, leben auch nicht danach,
The Lord replied, It's because they have given up keeping my laws that I placed before them. They haven't followed them; they haven't done what I told them.
14 sondern folgen ihres Herzens Gedünken und Baalim, wie sie ihre Väter gelehret haben,
On the contrary, they have followed their own stubborn way of thinking, and went to worship the Baals, just as their forefathers taught them.
15 darum spricht der HERR Zebaoth, der Gott Israels, also: Siehe, ich will dies Volk mit Wermut speisen und mit Galle tränken.
So this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Watch out! I will give these people wormwood to eat and poisoned water to drink.
16 Ich will sie unter die Heiden zerstreuen, welche weder sie noch ihre Väter kennen, und will das Schwert hinter sie schicken, bis daß es aus mit ihnen sei.
I'm about to scatter them among nations unfamiliar to them and their forefathers, and I will send enemies with swords to chase after them until I have wiped them out.
17 So spricht der HERR Zebaoth: Schaffet und bestellet Klageweiber, daß sie kommen, und schicket nach denen, die es wohl können,
This is what the Lord Almighty says: Be aware of what's happening! Call for the professional women mourners, ask for the best of them.
18 und eilend uns klagen, daß unsere Augen mit Tränen rinnen und unsere Augenlider mit Wasser fließen,
Have them come as quickly as possible, and sing a funeral song about us, so we can cry our eyes out, so our tears will flow like streams.
19 daß man ein kläglich Geschrei höre zu Zion, nämlich also: Ach, wie sind wir so gar verstöret und zuschanden worden! Wir müssen das Land räumen, denn sie haben unsere Wohnungen geschleift.
The sound of weeping comes from Zion, “We're completely devastated! We're totally ashamed, because we've had to abandon our country, because our houses have been demolished.”
20 So höret nun, ihr Weiber, des HERRN Wort und nehmet zu Ohren seines Mundes Rede; lehret eure Töchter weinen, und eine lehre die andere klagen, nämlich also:
Women, listen to the Lord's message, hear what he has to say. Teach your daughters to mourn and sing songs of sadness.
21 Der Tod ist zu unsern Fenstern hereingefallen und in unsere Paläste kommen, die Kinder zu würgen auf der Gasse und die Jünglinge auf der Straße.
Death has slipped in through our windows; it has come into our fortresses. It has killed the children playing in the streets and the young people gathering in the town squares.
22 So spricht der HERR: Sage: Der Menschen Leichname sollen liegen wie der Mist auf dem Felde und wie Garben hinter dem Schnitter, die niemand sammelt.
Tell everyone this is what the Lord says: Dead bodies will be left where they fall like manure in the fields, lying there like stalks of freshly-cut grain behind the reaper, with no one to collect them.
23 So spricht der HERR: Ein Weiser rühme sich nicht seiner Weisheit, ein Starker rühme sich nicht seiner Stärke, ein Reicher rühme sich nicht seines Reichtums,
This is what the Lord says: The wise shouldn't boast about their wisdom. The strong shouldn't boast about their strength. The rich shouldn't boast about their riches.
24 sondern wer sich rühmen will, der rühme sich des, daß er mich wisse und kenne, daß ich der HERR bin, der Barmherzigkeit, Recht und Gerechtigkeit übet auf Erden; denn solches gefällt mir, spricht der HERR.
Anyone who wants to boast should boast that they really know and understand me, recognizing that I am the Lord who acts with trustworthy love, who shows fairness, and who does what is right everywhere on earth, because these mean the most to me, declares the Lord.
25 Siehe, es kommt die Zeit, spricht der HERR, daß ich heimsuchen werde alle, die Beschnittenen mit den Unbeschnittenen,
Watch out, for the time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will punish all who are only physically circumcised.
26 nämlich Ägypten, Juda, Edom, die Kinder Ammon, Moab und alle, die in den Örtern der Wüste wohnen. Denn alle Heiden haben unbeschnittene Vorhaut, aber das ganze Haus Israel hat unbeschnitten Herz.
Egypt, Judah, Edom, Ammon, Moab, and all the desert people who trim their hair on the sides of their heads—all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the Israelites are spiritually uncircumcised.
