Hesekiel 18
1 Und des HERRN Wort geschah zu mir und sprach:
The word of the Lord came to me again, saying,
2 Was treibet ihr unter euch im Lande Israel dies Sprichwort und sprechet: Die Väter haben Herlinge gegessen, aber den Kindern sind die Zähne davon stumpf worden?
Why do you make use of this saying about the land of Israel, The fathers have been tasting bitter grapes and the children's teeth are on edge?
3 So wahr als ich lebe, spricht der HERR HERR, solch Sprichwort soll nicht mehr unter euch gehen in Israel.
By my life, says the Lord, you will no longer have this saying in Israel.
4 Denn siehe, alle Seelen sind mein; des Vaters Seele ist sowohl mein als des Sohnes Seele. Welche Seele sündiget, die soll sterben.
See, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so the soul of the son is mine: death will be the fate of the sinner's soul.
5 Wenn nun einer fromm ist, der recht und wohl tut;
But if a man is upright, living rightly and doing righteousness,
6 der auf den Bergen nicht isset; der seine Augen nicht aufhebet zu den Götzen des Hauses Israel und seines Nächsten Weib nicht befleckt und liegt nicht bei der Frau in ihrer Krankheit;
And has not taken flesh with the blood for food, or given worship to the images of the children of Israel; if he has not had connection with his neighbour's wife, or come near to a woman at the time when she is unclean;
7 der niemand beschädiget; der dem Schuldner sein Pfand wiedergibt; der niemand etwas mit Gewalt nimmt; der dem Hungrigen sein Brot mitteilet und den Nackenden kleidet;
And has done no wrong to any, but has given back to the debtor what is his, and has taken no one's goods by force, and has given food to him who was in need of it, and clothing to him who was without it;
8 der nicht wuchert; der niemand übersetzet; der seine Hand vom Unrechten kehret; der zwischen den Leuten recht urteilet;
And has not given his money out at interest or taken great profits, and, turning his hand from evil-doing, has kept faith between man and man,
9 der nach meinen Rechten wandelt und meine Gebote hält, daß er ernstlich danach tue: das ist ein frommer Mann; der soll das Leben haben, spricht der HERR HERR.
And has been guided by my rules and has kept my laws and done them: he is upright, life will certainly be his, says the Lord.
10 Wenn er aber einen Sohn zeuget, und derselbige wird ein Mörder, der Blut vergeußt oder dieser Stücke eins tut
If he has a son who is a thief, a taker of life, who does any of these things,
11 und der andern Stücke keins nicht tut, sondern isset auf den Bergen und beflecket seines Nächsten Weib,
Who has taken flesh with the blood as food, and has had connection with his neighbour's wife,
12 beschädiget die Armen und Elenden, mit Gewalt etwas nimmt, das Pfand nicht wiedergibt, seine Augen zu den Götzen aufhebet, damit er einen Greuel begehet,
Has done wrong to the poor and to him who is in need, and taken property by force, and has not given back to one in his debt what is his, and has given worship to images and has done disgusting things,
13 gibt auf Wucher, übersetzt: sollte der leben? Er soll nicht leben, sondern weil er solche Greuel alle getan hat, soll er des Todes sterben; sein Blut soll auf ihm sein.
And has given out his money at interest and taken great profits: he will certainly not go on living: he has done all these disgusting things: death will certainly be his fate; his blood will be on him.
14 Wo er aber einen Sohn zeuget, der alle solche Sünde siehet, so sein Vater tut, und sich fürchtet und nicht also tut:
Now if he has a son who sees all his father's sins which he has done, and in fear does not do the same:
15 isset nicht auf den Bergen, hebet seine Augen nicht auf zu den Götzen des Hauses Israel, beflecket nicht seines Nächsten Weib,
Who has not taken the flesh with the blood for food, or given worship to the images of the children of Israel, and has not had connection with his neighbour's wife,
16 beschädiget niemand, behält das Pfand nicht, nicht mit Gewalt etwas nimmt, teilet sein Brot mit dem Hungrigen und kleidet den Nackenden;
Or done wrong to any, or taken anything from one in his debt, or taken goods by force, but has given food to him who was in need of it, and clothing to him who was without it;
17 der seine Hand vom Unrechten kehret, keinen Wucher noch Übersatz nimmt, sondern meine Gebote hält und nach meinen Rechten lebet: der soll nicht sterben um seines Vaters Missetat willen, sondern leben.
Who has kept his hand from evil-doing and has not taken interest or great profits, who has done my orders and been guided by my rules: he will certainly not be put to death for the evil-doing of his father; life will certainly be his.
18 Aber sein Vater, der Gewalt und Unrecht geübet und unter seinem Volk getan hat, das nicht taugt, siehe, derselbige soll sterben um seiner Missetat willen.
As for his father, because he was cruel, took goods by force, and did what is not good among his people, truly, death will overtake him in his evil-doing.
19 So sprechet ihr: Warum soll denn ein Sohn nicht tragen seines Vaters Missetat? Darum, daß er recht und wohl getan und alle meine Rechte gehalten und getan hat, soll er leben.
But you say, Why does not the son undergo punishment for the evil-doing of the father? When the son has done what is ordered and right, and has kept my rules and done them, life will certainly be his.
20 Denn welche Seele sündiget, die soll sterben. Der Sohn soll nicht tragen die Missetat des Vaters, und der Vater soll nicht tragen die Missetat des Sohnes, sondern des Gerechten Gerechtigkeit soll über ihm sein, und des Ungerechten Ungerechtigkeit soll über ihm sein.
The soul which does sin will be put to death: the son will not be made responsible for the evil-doing of the father, or the father for the evil-doing of the son; the righteousness of the upright will be on himself, and the evil-doing of the evil-doer on himself.
21 Wo sich aber der Gottlose bekehret von allen seinen Sünden, die er getan hat, und hält alle meine Rechte und tut recht und wohl, so soll er leben und nicht sterben.
But if the evil-doer, turning away from all the sins which he has done, keeps my rules and does what is ordered and right, life will certainly be his; death will not be his fate.
22 Es soll aller seiner Übertretung, so er begangen hat, nicht gedacht werden, sondern soll leben um der Gerechtigkeit willen, die er tut.
Not one of the sins which he has done will be kept in memory against him: in the righteousness which he has done he will have life.
23 Meinest du, daß ich Gefallen habe am Tode des Gottlosen, spricht der HERR HERR, und nicht vielmehr, daß er sich bekehre von seinem Wesen und lebe?
Have I any pleasure in the death of the evil-doer? says the Lord: am I not pleased if he is turned from his way so that he may have life?
24 Und wo sich der Gerechte kehret von seiner Gerechtigkeit und tut Böses und lebet nach allen Greueln, die ein Gottloser tut, sollte der leben? Ja, aller seiner Gerechtigkeit, die er getan hat, soll nicht gedacht werden, sondern in seiner Übertretung und Sünden, die er getan hat, soll er sterben.
But when the upright man, turning away from his righteousness, does evil, like all the disgusting things which the evil man does, will he have life? Not one of his upright acts will be kept in memory: in the wrong which he has done and in his sin death will overtake him.
25 Noch sprechet ihr: Der HERR handelt nicht recht. So höret nun, ihr vom Hause Israel: Ist's nicht also, daß ich recht habe und ihr unrecht habt?
But you say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Give ear, now, O children of Israel; is my way not equal? are not your ways unequal?
26 Denn wenn der Gerechte sich kehret von seiner Gerechtigkeit und tut Böses, so muß er sterben; er muß aber um seiner Bosheit willen, die er getan hat, sterben.
When the upright man, turning away from his righteousness, does evil, death will overtake him; in the evil which he has done death will overtake him.
27 Wiederum, wenn sich der Gottlose kehret von seiner Ungerechtigkeit, die er getan hat, und tut nun recht und wohl, der wird seine Seele lebendig behalten.
Again, when the evil-doer, turning away from the evil he has done, does what is ordered and right, he will have life for his soul.
28 Denn weil er siehet und bekehret sich von aller seiner Bosheit, die er getan hat, so soll er leben und nicht sterben.
Because he had fear and was turned away from all the wrong which he had done, life will certainly be his, death will not be his fate.
29 Noch sprechen die vom Hause Israel: Der HERR handelt nicht recht. Sollt ich unrecht haben? Ihr vom Hause Israel habt unrecht.
But still the children of Israel say, The way of the Lord is not equal. O children of Israel, are my ways not equal? are not your ways unequal?
30 Darum will ich euch richten, ihr vom Hause Israel, einen jeglichen nach seinem Wesen, spricht der HERR HERR. Darum so bekehret euch von aller eurer Übertretung, auf daß ihr nicht fallen müsset um der Missetat willen.
For this cause I will be your judge, O children of Israel, judging every man by his ways, says the Lord. Come back and be turned from all your sins; so that they may not be the cause of your falling into evil.
31 Werfet von euch alle eure Übertretung, damit ihr übertreten habt, und machet euch ein neu Herz und neuen Geist. Denn warum willst du also sterben, du Haus Israel?
Put away all your evil-doing in which you have done sin; and make for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit: why are you desiring death, O children of Israel?
32 Denn ich habe keinen Gefallen am Tode des Sterbenden, spricht der HERR HERR. Darum bekehret euch, so werdet ihr leben!
For I have no pleasure in the death of him on whom death comes, says the Lord: be turned back then, and have life.
