2 Chronik 24

1 Joas war sieben Jahre alt, da er König ward, und regierete vierzig Jahre zu Jerusalem. Seine Mutter hieß Zibja von Berseba.

Joash was seven when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem for forty years. His mother's name was Zibiah of Beersheba.

2 Und Joas tat, was dem HERRN wohlgefiel, solange der Priester Jojada lebte.

Joash did what was right in the Lord's sight during the lifetime of Jehoiada the priest.

3 Und Jojada gab ihm zwei Weiber, und er zeugete Söhne und Töchter.

Jehoiada arranged for him to marry two wives, and he had sons and daughters.

4 Danach nahm Joas vor, das Haus des HERRN zu erneuern.

Some time later, Joash decided to repair the Lord's Temple.

5 Und versammelte die Priester und Leviten und sprach zu ihnen: Ziehet aus zu allen Städten Judas und sammelt Geld aus dem ganzen Israel, das Haus eures Gottes zu bessern jährlich; und eilet, solches zu tun! Aber die Leviten eileten nicht.

He summoned the priests and Levites and told them, “Go to the towns of Judah and collect the yearly dues from everyone in Israel to repair the Temple of your God. Do it right away.” But the Levites did not go right away.

6 Da rief der König Jojada, dem Vornehmsten, und sprach zu ihm: Warum hast du nicht acht auf die Leviten, daß sie einbringen von Juda und Jerusalem die Steuer, die Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, gesetzt hat, die man sammelte unter Israel zu der Hütte des Stifts?

So the king called for Jehoiada the high priest and asked him, “Why haven't you ordered the Levites to collect from Judah and Jerusalem the tax that Moses, the Lord's servant, and the assembly of Israel imposed to maintain the Tent of the Law?”

7 Denn die gottlose Athalja und ihre Söhne haben das Haus Gottes zerrissen und alles, was zum Hause des HERRN geheiliget war, haben sie an Baalim vermacht.

(The supporters of that wicked woman Athaliah had broken into God's Temple and had stolen the holy objects of the Lord's Temple and used them to worship the Baals.)

8 Da befahl der König, daß man ein Lade machte und setzte sie außen ins To am Hause des HERRN.

The king ordered a collection chest to be made and placed outside the entrance to the Lord's Temple.

9 Und ließ ausrufen in Juda und zu Jerusalem, daß man dem HERRN einbringen sollte die Steuer von Mose, dem Knechte Gottes, auf Israel gelegt in der Wüste.

A decree was proclaimed throughout Judea and Jerusalem to bring to the Lord the tax that Moses, the Lord's servant, imposed on Israel in the wilderness.

10 Da freueten sich alle Obersten und alles Volk und brachten es und warfen es in die Lade, bis sie voll ward.

All the leaders and all the people were glad to do so and brought their taxes. They dropped them in the chest until it was full.

11 Und wenn's Zeit war, daß man die Lade herbringen sollte durch die Leviten nach des Königs Befehl (wenn sie sahen daß viel Geld drinnen war), so kam der Schreiber des Königs, und wer vom vornehmsten Priester Befehl hatte, und schütteten die Lade aus und trugen sie wieder hin an ihren Ort. So taten sie alle Tage, daß sie Geldes die Menge zuhauf brachten.

Every so often the Levites took the chest to the king's officials. When they saw that it contained a large amount of money, the king's secretary and the chief officer of the high priest would come and empty the chest. Then they would carry it back to its place. They did this every day and collected a great deal of money.

12 Und der König und Jojada gaben es den Arbeitern, die da schafften am Hause des HERRN; dieselben dingeten Steinmetzen und Zimmerleute, zu erneuern das Haus des HERRN; auch den Meistern an Eisen und Erz, zu bessern das Haus des HERRN.

Then the king and Jehoiada would allocate the money of those supervising the work on the Lord's Temple to hire stonecutters and carpenters to restore the Lord's Temple and craftsmen in iron and bronze to repair the Lord's Temple.

13 Und die Arbeiter arbeiteten, daß die Besserung im Werk zunahm durch ihre Hand; und machten das Haus Gottes ganz fertig und wohl zugerichtet; und machten es fest.

The men doing the repairs worked hard and made good progress. They restored God's Temple to its original condition and strengthened it.

14 Und da sie es vollendet hatten, brachten sie das übrige Geld vor den König und Jojada; davon machte man Gefäße zum Hause des HERRN, Gefäße zum Dienst und zu Brandopfern, Löffel und güldene und silberne Geräte. Und sie opferten Brandopfer, bei dem Hause des HERRN allewege, solange Jojada lebte.

When they finished, they returned the money that was left to the king and Jehoiada, and with it utensils were made for the Lord's Temple, both for the worship services and for the burnt offerings, also bowls for incense and vessels of gold and silver. Burnt offerings were regularly offered in the Lord's Temple regularly throughout Jehoiada's lifetime.

15 Und Jojada ward alt und des Lebens satt und starb; und war hundertunddreißig Jahre alt, da er starb.

Jehoiada grew old and died at the age of 130, having lived a full life.

16 Und sie begruben ihn in der Stadt Davids unter die Könige, darum daß er hatte wohlgetan an Israel und an Gott und seinem Hause.

He was buried with the kings in the City of David, for all the good he had done in Israel for God and his Temple.

17 Und nach dem Tode Jojadas kamen die Obersten in Juda und beteten den König an; da gehorchte ihnen der König.

But after the death of Jehoiada, the leaders of Judah came to swear their loyalty to the king, and he listened to their advice.

18 Und sie verließen das Haus des HERRN, des Gottes ihrer Väter, und dieneten den Hainen und Götzen. Da kam der Zorn über Juda und Jerusalem um dieser ihrer Schuld willen.

They abandoned the Temple of the Lord, the God of their forefathers, and worshiped Asherah poles and idols. Judah and Jerusalem were punished because of their sin.

19 Er sandte aber Propheten zu ihnen, daß sie sich zu dem HERRN bekehren sollten; und die bezeugten sie; aber sie nahmen es nicht zu Ohren.

The Lord sent prophets to bring the people back to him and to warn them; but they refused to listen.

20 Und der Geist Gottes zog an Sacharja, den Sohn Jojadas, des Priesters. Der trat oben über das Volk und sprach zu ihnen: So spricht Gott: Warum übertretet ihr die Gebote des HERRN, das euch nicht gelingen wird? Denn ihr habt den HERRN verlassen, so wird er euch wieder verlassen.

Then the Spirit of God came to Zechariah, son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood before the people and told them, “This is what God says: ‘Why do you break the Lord's commandments so that you cannot be successful? Since you have abandoned the Lord, he has abandoned you.’”

21 Aber sie machten einen Bund wider ihn und steinigten ihn nach dem Gebot des Königs im Hofe am Hause des HERRN.

Then the leaders hatched a plot to kill Zechariah, and on the orders of the king they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the Lord's Temple.

22 Und der König Joas gedachte nicht an die Barmherzigkeit, die Jojada sein Vater, an ihm getan hatte, sondern erwürgete seinen Sohn. Da er aber starb, sprach er: Der HERR wird's sehen und suchen.

King Joash showed he had forgotten all about the loyalty and love shown to him by Jehoiada, Zechariah's father, by killing his son. As he died, Zechariah cried out, “May the Lord see what you've done and pay you back!”

23 Und da das Jahr um war, zog herauf das Heer der Syrer, und kamen nach Juda und Jerusalem und verderbeten alle Obersten im Volk; und allen ihren Raub sandten sie dem Könige zu Damaskus.

At the end of the year, the Aramean army came to attack Joash. They invaded Judah and Jerusalem and killed all the people's leaders, and sent all their plunder back to the king of Damascus.

24 Denn der Syrer Macht kam mit wenig Männern, noch gab der HERR in ihre Hand eine sehr große Macht, darum daß sie den HERRN, ihrer Väter Gott, verlassen hatten. Auch übten sie an Joas Strafe.

Even though the Aramean army had come with only a few men, the Lord gave them the victory over a very large army, because Judah had abandoned the Lord, the God of their forefathers. In this way they punished Joash.

25 Und da sie von ihm zogen, ließen sie ihn in großen Krankheiten. Es machten aber seine Knechte einen Bund wider ihn um des Bluts willen der Kinder Jojadas, des Priesters, und erwürgeten ihn auf seinem Bette; und er starb. Und man begrub ihn in der Stadt Davids, aber nicht unter der Könige Gräber.

When the Arameans departed, they left Joash badly wounded. But then his own officers plotted against him for murdering the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed him in his bed. He was buried in the City of David, but not in the cemetery of the kings.

26 Die aber den Bund wider ihn machten, waren diese: Sabad, der Sohn Simeaths, der Ammonitin, und Josabad, der Sohn Simriths, der Moabitin.

Those who plotted against him were Zabad, son of Shimeath, an Ammonite woman, and Jehozabad, son of Shimrith, a Moabite woman.

27 Aber seine Söhne und die Summa, die unter ihm versammelt war, und der Bau des Hauses Gottes, siehe, die sind beschrieben in der Historia im Buch der Könige. Und sein Sohn Amazia ward König an seiner Statt.

The story of the sons of Joash, as well as the many prophecies about him and about the restoration of God's Temple, are recorded in the Commentary on the Book of the Kings. His son Amaziah took over as king.
