1 Samuel 16

1 Und der HERR sprach zu Samuel: Wie lange trägst du Leid um Saul, den ich verworfen habe, daß er nicht König sei über Israel? Fülle dein Horn mit Öl und gehe hin, ich will dich senden zu dem Bethlehemiter Isai; denn unter seinen Söhnen habe ich mir einen König ersehen.

And the Lord said to Samuel, How long will you go on sorrowing for Saul, seeing that I have put him from his place as king over Israel? Take oil in your vessel and go; I will send you to Jesse, the Beth-lehemite: for I have got a king for myself among his sons.

2 Samuel aber sprach: Wie soll ich hingehen? Saul wird's erfahren und mich erwürgen. Der HERR sprach: Nimm ein Kalb von den Rindern zu dir und sprich: Ich bin kommen, dem HERRN zu opfern.

And Samuel said, How is it possible for me to go? If Saul gets news of it he will put me to death. And the Lord said, Take a young cow with you and say, I have come to make an offering to the Lord.

3 Und sollst Isai zum Opfer laden; da will ich dir weisen, was du tun sollst, daß du mir salbest, welchen ich dir sagen werde.

And send for Jesse to be present at the offering, and I will make clear to you what you are to do: and you are to put the holy oil on him whose name I give you.

4 Samuel tat, wie ihm der HERR gesagt hatte, und kam gen Bethlehem. Da entsetzten sich die Ältesten der Stadt und gingen ihm entgegen und sprachen: Ist's Friede, daß du kommest?

And Samuel did as the Lord said and came to Beth-lehem. And the responsible men of the town came out to him in fear and said, Do you come in peace?

5 Er sprach: Ja, ich bin kommen, dem HERRN zu opfern; heiliget euch und kommet mit mir zum Opfer! Und er heiligte den Isai und seine Söhne und lud sie zum Opfer.

And he said, In peace: I have come to make an offering to the Lord: make yourselves clean and come with me to make the offering. And he made Jesse and his sons clean, and sent for them to be present at the offering.

6 Da sie nun hereinkamen, sah er den Eliab an und gedachte, ob der vor dem HERRN sei sein Gesalbter.

Now when they came, looking at Eliab, he said, Clearly the man of the Lord's selection is before him.

7 Aber der HERR sprach zu Samuel: Siehe nicht an seine Gestalt noch seine große Person; ich habe ihn verworfen. Denn es gehet nicht, wie ein Mensch siehet. Ein Mensch siehet, was vor Augen ist, der HERR aber siehet das Herz an.

But the Lord said to Samuel, Do not take note of his face or how tall he is, because I will not have him: for the Lord's view is not man's; man takes note of the outer form, but the Lord sees the heart.

8 Da rief Isai dem Abinadab und ließ ihn vor Samuel übergehen. Und er sprach: Diesen hat der HERR auch nicht erwählet.

Then Jesse sent for Abinadab and made him come before Samuel. And he said, The Lord has not taken this one.

9 Da ließ Isai vorübergehen Samma. Er aber sprach: Diesen hat der HERR auch nicht erwählet.

Then Jesse made Shammah come before him. And he said, The Lord has not taken this one.

10 Da ließ Isai seine sieben Söhne vor Samuel übergehen. Aber Samuel sprach zu Isai: Der HERR hat der keinen erwählet.

And Jesse made his seven sons come before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, The Lord has not taken any of these.

11 Und Samuel sprach zu Isai: Sind das die Knaben alle? Er sprach: Es ist noch übrig der Kleinste; und siehe, er hütet der Schafe. Da sprach Samuel zu Isai: Sende hin und laß ihn holen; denn wir werden uns nicht setzen, bis er hieher komme.

Then Samuel said to Jesse, Are all your children here? And he said, There is still the youngest, and he is looking after the sheep. And Samuel said to Jesse, Send and make him come here: for we will not take our seats till he is here.

12 Da sandte er hin und ließ ihn holen. Und er war bräunlich, mit schönen Augen und guter Gestalt. Und der HERR sprach: Auf! und salbe ihn; denn der ist's.

So he sent and made him come in. Now he had red hair and beautiful eyes and pleasing looks. And the Lord said, Come, put the oil on him, for this is he.

13 Da nahm Samuel sein Ölhorn und salbete ihn mitten unter seinen Brüdern. Und der Geist des HERRN geriet über David von dem Tage an und fürder. Samuel aber machte sich auf und ging gen Rama.

Then Samuel took the bottle of oil, and put the oil on him there among his brothers: and from that day the spirit of the Lord came on David with power. So Samuel went back to Ramah.

14 Der Geist aber des HERRN wich von Saul, und ein böser Geist vom HERRN machte ihn sehr unruhig.

Now the spirit of the Lord had gone from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord was troubling him.

15 Da sprachen die Knechte Sauls zu ihm: Siehe, ein böser Geist von Gott macht dich sehr unruhig.

And Saul's servants said to him, See now, an evil spirit from God is troubling you.

16 Unser HERR sage seinen Knechten, die vor ihm stehen, daß sie einen Mann suchen, der auf der Harfe wohl spielen könne, auf daß, wenn der böse Geist Gottes über dich kommt, er mit seiner Hand spiele, daß besser mit dir werde.

Now give orders to your servants who are here before you to go in search of a man who is an expert player on a corded instrument: and it will be that when the evil spirit from God is on you, he will make music for you on his instrument, and you will get well.

17 Da sprach Saul zu seinen Knechten: Sehet nach einem Manne, der es wohl kann auf Saitenspiel, und bringet ihn zu mir.

And Saul said to his servants, Then get me a man who is an expert player, and make him come to me.

18 Da antwortete der Knaben einer und sprach: Siehe, ich habe gesehen einen Sohn Isais, des Bethlehemiten, der kann wohl auf Saitenspiel; ein rüstiger Mann und streitbar und verständig in Sachen und schön, und der HERR ist mit ihm.

Then one of the servants in answer said, I have seen a son of Jesse, the Beth-lehemite, who is expert at playing, and a strong man and a man of war; and he is wise in his words, and pleasing in looks, and the Lord is with him.

19 Da sandte Saul Boten zu Isai und ließ ihm sagen: Sende deinen Sohn David zu mir, der bei den Schafen ist!

So Saul sent his servants to Jesse and said, Send me your son David who is with the sheep.

20 Da nahm Isai einen Esel mit Brot und ein Legel Weins und ein Ziegenböcklein und sandte es Saul durch seinen Sohn David.

And Jesse took five cakes of bread and a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them to Saul by David.

21 Also kam David zu Saul und dienete vor ihm, und er gewann ihn sehr lieb, und er ward sein Waffenträger.

And David came to Saul, waiting before him: and he became very dear to Saul, who made him his servant, giving him the care of his arms.

22 Und Saul sandte zu Isai und ließ ihm sagen: Laß David vor mir bleiben, denn er hat Gnade funden vor meinen Augen.

And Saul sent to Jesse saying, Let David be with me, for he is pleasing to me.

23 Wenn nun der Geist Gottes über Saul kam, so nahm David die Harfe und spielete mit seiner Hand; so erquickte sich Saul, und ward besser mit ihm, und der böse Geist wich von ihm.

And whenever the evil spirit from God came on Saul, David took his instrument and made music: so new life came to Saul, and he got well, and the evil spirit went away from him.
