1 Und Ahab sagte Isebel an alles was Elia getan hatte, und wie er hätte alle Propheten Baals mit dem Schwert erwürget.
Ahab told Jezebel everything that Elijah had done and that he had killed all the prophets of Baal with the sword.
2 Da sandte Isebel einen Boten zu Elia und ließ ihm sagen: Die Götter tun mir dies und das, wo ich nicht morgen um diese Zeit deiner Seele tue wie dieser Seelen einer!
Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods do as much to me and more if by tomorrow I haven't made your life like the lives of those you killed!”
3 Da er das sah, machte er sich auf und ging, wo er hin wollte, und kam gen Berseba in Juda und ließ seinen Knaben daselbst.
Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he arrived in Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there
4 Er aber ging hin in die Wüste eine Tagreise; und kam hinein und setzte sich unter einen Wacholder und bat, daß seine Seele stürbe, und sprach: Es ist genug; nimm nun, HERR, meine Seele! Ich bin nicht besser denn meine Väter.
and traveled another day's journey into the desert. He sat down under a broom tree and asked to die. “I've had enough now, Lord,” he said. “Take my life! I'm no better than my forefathers.”
5 Und legte sich und schlief unter dem Wacholder. Und siehe, der Engel rührete ihn und sprach zu ihm: Stehe auf und iß!
He lay down and fell asleep under the broom tree. All of a sudden an angel touched him and said, “Get up, and eat.”
6 Und er sah sich um, und siehe, zu seinen Häupten lag ein geröstet Brot und eine Kanne mit Wasser. Und da er gegessen und getrunken hatte, legte er sich wieder schlafen.
He looked around, and there beside his head was some bread baking over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and lay down again.
7 Und der Engel des HERRN kam zum andernmal wieder und rührete ihn und sprach: Stehe auf und iß; denn du hast einen großen Weg vor dir.
The angel of the Lord returned a second time and touched him, and said, “Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you.”
8 Und er stund auf und aß und trank; und ging durch Kraft derselben Speise vierzig Tage und vierzig Nächte bis an den Berg Gottes Horeb.
So he got up and ate and drank, and with the strength the food gave him he was able to walk forty days and forty nights to Mount Horeb, the mountain of God.
9 Und kam daselbst in eine Höhle und blieb daselbst über Nacht. Und siehe, das Wort des HERRN kam zu ihm und sprach zu ihm: Was machst du hie, Elia?
There he entered a cave and spent the night. The Lord spoke to Elijah, and asked him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
10 Er sprach: Ich habe geeifert um den HERRN, den Gott Zeboath; denn die Kinder Israel haben deinen Bund verlassen und deine Altäre zerbrochen und deine Propheten mit dem Schwert erwürget; und ich bin allein überblieben, und sie stehen danach, daß sie mir mein Leben nehmen.
“I have worked passionately for the Lord God Almighty,” he replied. “But the Israelites have abandoned your agreement, torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I am the only one who's left, and they are trying to kill me as well.”
11 Er sprach: Gehe heraus und tritt auf den Berg vor den HERRN. Und siehe, der HERR ging vorüber, und ein großer, starker Wind, der die Berge zerriß und die Felsen zerbrach, vor dem HERRN her; der HERR aber war nicht im Winde. Nach dem Winde aber kam ein Erdbeben; aber der HERR war nicht im Erdbeben.
Then the Lord told him, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” Right then the Lord passed by. A tremendously powerful wind ripped into the mountains and smashed rocks before the Lord, but the Lord wasn't in the wind. After the wind there came an earthquake, but the Lord wasn't in the earthquake.
12 Und nach dem Erdbeben kam ein Feuer; aber der HERR war nicht im Feuer. Und nach dem Feuer kam ein still sanftes Sausen.
After the earthquake there came a fire, but the Lord wasn't in the fire. And after the fire came a voice speaking in a gentle whisper.
13 Da das Elia hörete, verhüllete er sein Antlitz mit seinem Mantel und ging heraus und trat in die Tür der Höhle. Und siehe, da kam eine Stimme zu ihm und sprach: Was hast du hie zu tun, Elia?
When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his cloak around his face and went out and stood at the cave entrance. Immediately a voice spoke to him and asked, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
14 Er sprach: Ich habe um den HERRN, den Gott Zebaoth, geeifert; denn die Kinder Israel haben deinen Bund verlassen, deine Altäre zerbrochen, deine Propheten mit dem Schwert erwürget; und ich bin allein überblieben, und sie stehen danach, daß sie mir das Leben nehmen.

15 Aber der HERR sprach zu ihm: Gehe wiederum deines Weges durch die Wüste gen Damaskus; und geh hinein und salbe Hasael zum Könige über Syrien
The Lord told him, “Go back the way you came to the desert of Damascus. When you get there, go and anoint Hazael king of Aram.
16 und Jehu, den Sohn Nimsis, zum Könige über Israel und Elisa, den Sohn Saphats, von Abel-Mehola, zum Propheten an deiner Statt.
Also anoint Jehu, son of Nimshi, king of Israel and Elisha, son of Shaphat, from Abel-meholah, to take over from you as prophet.
17 Und soll geschehen, daß, wer dem Schwert Hasaels entrinnet, den soll Jehu töten, und wer dem Schwert Jehus entrinnet den soll Elisa töten.
Jehu will execute anyone who escapes the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will execute anyone who escapes the sword of Jehu.
18 Und ich will lassen überbleiben siebentausend in Israel, nämlich alle Kniee, die sich nicht gebeuget haben vor Baal, und allen Mund, der ihn nicht geküsset hat.
I still have seven thousand left in Israel, all those who have not bowed their knees to worship and whose mouths have not kissed him.”
19 Und er ging von dannen und fand Elisa, den Sohn Saphats, daß er pflügete mit zwölf Jochen vor sich hin; und er war selbst unter den Zwölfen. Und Elia ging zu ihm und warf seinen Mantel auf ihn.
So Elijah left, and went and found Elisha, son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve pairs of oxen, and he was with the twelfth pair. Elijah went over to him and threw his cloak around him.
20 Er aber ließ die Rinder und lief Elia nach und sprach: Laß mich meinen Vater und meine Mutter küssen, so will ich dir nachfolgen. Er sprach zu ihm: Gehe hin und komm wieder; denn ich habe etwas mit dir zu tun.
Elisha left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, “Please let me go and kiss my father and mother goodbye, and then I will follow you.” “Go on home,” Elijah replied. “I've never done anything for you.”
21 Und er lief wieder von ihm und nahm ein Joch Rinder und opferte es; und kochte das Fleisch mit dem Holzwerk an den Rindern und gab's dem Volk, daß sie aßen. Und machte sich auf und folgte Elia nach und dienete ihm.
Elisha left him, took his pair of oxen, and slaughtered them. Using the wood of the oxen's yoke as fuel, he cooked the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate it. Then he left to follow and serve Elijah.
