Psalm 76

1 Dem Musikmeister, mit Saitenspiel. Ein Psalm Asaphs. Ein Lied. Gott ist in Juda bekannt, in Israel ist sein Name groß.

To the chief Musician. On stringed instruments. A Psalm of Asaph: a Song. In Judah is God known, his name is great in Israel;

2 Ist doch in Salem seine Hütte, und seine Wohnung auf Zion.

And in Salem is his tent, and his dwelling-place in Zion.

3 Dort zerbrach er die Blitze des Bogens, Schild und Schwert und Streit. (Sela)

There broke he the flashings of the bow, shield and sword and battle. (Selah)

4 Furchtbar bist du, herrlich, von den ewigen Bergen her.

More glorious art thou, more excellent, than the mountains of prey.

5 Ausgeplündert wurden, die starkes Mutes waren; sie sanken in Schlaf, und allen Tapferen versagten ihre Hände.

The stout-hearted are made a spoil, they have slept their sleep; and none of the men of might have found their hands.

6 Von deinem Schelten, Gott Jakobs, wurden so Wagen als Roß in tiefen Schlaf versenkt.

At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, both chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep.

7 Du bist furchtbar, und wer kann vor deinem Angesicht bestehn, sobald du zürnst?

Thou, thou art to be feared, and who can stand before thee when once thou art angry?

8 Vom Himmel ließest du das Urteil vernehmen; da erschrak die Erde und ward still,

Thou didst cause judgment to be heard from the heavens; the earth feared, and was still,

9 als Gott sich zum Gericht erhob, um allen Gebeugten auf Erden zu helfen. (Sela)

When God rose up to judgment, to save all the meek of the earth. (Selah)

10 Denn der Grimm der Menschen preist dich; mit dem Überreste der Ausbrüche des Grimms gürtest du dich.

For the fury of man shall praise thee; the remainder of fury wilt thou gird on thyself.

11 Gelobt und bezahlt Gelübde Jahwe, eurem Gott! Alle um ihn her müssen dem Furchtbaren Gaben bringen,

Vow and pay unto Jehovah your God: let all that are round about him bring presents unto him that is to be feared.

12 der Fürsten des Mutes beraubt und den Königen auf Erden furchtbar ist.

He cutteth off the spirit of princes; [he] is terrible to the kings of the earth.
