Nehemia 9

1 Und am vierundzwanzigsten Tage dieses Monats versammelten sich die Israeliten unter Fasten und in härenen Gewändern und mit Erde auf ihren Häuptern.

Now, on the twenty-fourth day of this month, were the sons of Israel gathered together, with fasting and with sackcloth, having earth upon them.

2 Und die Abkömmlinge der Israeliten hielten sich von allen Ausländern abgesondert, und sie traten hin und bekannten ihre Sünden und die Verschuldungen ihrer Väter.

And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all the sons of the foreigner, —and stood and made confession over their own sins, and the iniquities of their fathers.

3 Sodann erhoben sie sich an ihrem Platze, und man las aus dem Buche des Gesetzes Jahwes, ihres Gottes, während des vierten Teils des Tages vor, und während eines anderen Vierteils bekannten sie ihre Sünden und warfen sich vor Jahwe, ihrem Gotte, nieder.

So they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of Yahweh their God, a fourth part of the day, —and, a fourth part, they were making confession and bowing themselves down, unto Yahweh their God.

4 Und auf dem erhöhten Platze der Leviten standen Jesua, Bani, Kadmïel, Sebanja, Bunni, Serebja, Bani und Chenani und schrieen mit lauter Stimme zu Jahwe, ihrem Gott.

Then stood up on the platform of the Levites, Jeshua and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, Chenani, —and made outcry, with a loud voice, unto Yahweh their God.

5 Und es sprachen die Leviten Jesua, Kadmïel, Bani, Hasabneja, Serebja, Hodia, Sebanja, Pethahja: Wohlan, preiset Jahwe, euren Gott, von Ewigkeit zu Ewigkeit! Und preisen soll man deinen herrlichen und über allen Preis und Ruhm erhabenen Namen!

Then said the Levites—Jeshua and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, Pethahiah, Stand up, bless Yahweh your God, from age to age, —Yea let them bless thy glorious Name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.

6 Und Esra sprach: Du, Jahwe, bist's allein; du hast den Himmel geschaffen, den Himmel bis zu seinen höchsten Höhen mit seinem ganzen Heer, die Erde und alles, was auf ihr ist, das Meer und alles, was in ihm ist, und du machst sie alle lebendig, und das Heer des Himmels verneigt sich vor dir.

Thou, art Yahweh, thou alone, Thou, didst make the heavens, the heavens of heavens, and all their host, the earth and all that is thereon, the seas and all that is therein, and, thou, holdest them all in life, —and, the host of the heavens, unto thee, are bowing down.

7 Du bist's, Jahwe, Gott, der du Abram erwählt und aus Ur in Chaldäa hinweggeführt und ihm den Namen Abraham gegeben hast.

Thou, art Yahweh, God, who didst choose Abram, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, —and madest his name Abraham;

8 Und da du sein Herz treu gegen dich erfandest, so gabst du ihm die feierliche Zusage, daß du das Land der Kanaaniter, Hethiter, Amoriter, Pheresiter, Jebusiter und Girgasiter - daß du es seinen Nachkommen verleihen wollest. Und du hast deine Zusage erfüllt, denn du bist gerecht.

and didst find his heart faithful before thee, and didst solemnize with him a covenant, to give the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite, and the Girgashite, —to give it unto his seed, —and didst confirm thy words, for, righteous, thou art.

9 Und als du das Elend unserer Väter in Ägypten wahrnahmst und ihr Geschrei am Schilfmeer hörtest,

Yea thou sawest the affliction of our fathers, in Egypt, and, their outcry, thou heardest, by the Red Sea;

10 da thatest du Wunder und Zeichen am Pharao und an allen seinen Dienern und an allen Bewohnern seines Landes; denn du hattest bemerkt, daß sie übermütig gegen sie gehandelt hatten. Und so machtest du dir einen großen Namen bis auf den heutigen Tag.

and didst grant signs and wonders against Pharaoh, and against all his servants, and against all the people of his land, for thou hadst taken note, that they ruled proudly over them, —and so thou didst make thee a name, as at this day.

11 Und das Meer zerteiltest du vor ihnen, so daß sie mitten durch das Meer auf dem Trockenen hindurchzogen; aber ihre Verfolger schleudertest du in die Tiefen wie Steine, in gewaltige Gewässer.

And, the sea, didst thou cleave asunder before them, and they passed through the midst of the sea, on dry ground, —whereas, their pursuers, thou didst cast into the depths like a stone, into the mighty waters,

12 Und in der Wolkensäule führtest du sie bei Tage und in der Feuersäule des Nachts, um ihnen den Weg zu erleuchten, auf dem sie ziehen sollten.

And, in a pillar of cloud, didst thou lead them, by day, —and in a pillar of fire, by night, to light up for them the way wherein they should go.

13 Und auf den Berg Sinai stiegst du hinab, und indem du mit ihnen vom Himmel her redetest, gabst du ihnen billige Rechtsforderungen und wahrhaftige Gesetze und gute Satzungen und Gebote.

And, upon Mount Sinai, camest thou down, and spakest with them out of the heavens, —and gavest them just regulations, and faithful laws, good statutes and commandments.

14 Und deinen heiligen Sabbat hast du ihnen kundgethan und ihnen Gebote, Satzungen und Gesetz durch deinen Knecht Mose anbefohlen.

And, thy holy sabbath, didst thou make known to them, —and, commandments and statutes and a law, didst thou command them, through Moses thy servant.

15 Und du gabst ihnen Brot vom Himmel für ihren Hunger und ließest ihnen Wasser aus dem Felsen hervorquellen für ihren Durst. Und du befahlst ihnen, hineinzuziehen, um das Land in Besitz zu nehmen, dessen Verleihung du ihnen mit zum Schwur erhobener Hand versprochen hattest.

And, bread out of the heavens, didst thou give them, for their hunger, and, waters out of the cliff, didst thou bring them, for their thirst, —and badest them go in to take possession of the land, which thou hadst lifted thy hand to give them.

16 Aber sie, unsere Väter, wurden übermütig und halsstarrig und hörten nicht auf deine Gebote.

But, they and our fathers, dealt proudly, —and hardened their neck, and hearkened not unto thy commandments;

17 Sie verweigerten den Gehorsam und gedachten nicht deiner Wunderthaten, die du an ihnen gethan hattest, sondern zeigten sich halsstarrig und wählten einen Anführer, um zu ihrem Sklavendienst in Ägypten zurückzukehren. Du aber bist ein Gott, der gern verzeiht, gnädig und barmherzig, langmütig und reich an Huld, und hast sie nicht verlassen.

but refused to hearken, neither kept in mind thy wonders which thou hadst done with them, but they hardened their neck, and appointed a head that they might return to their servitude, in their perverseness. But, thou, art a God of forgivenesses, gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness, and didst not forsake them.

18 Sogar als sie sich ein gegossenes Kalb machten und sprachen: “Das ist dein Gott, der dich aus Ägypten weggeführt hat”, und große Lästerungen vollführten,

Yea, although they made them a molten calf, and said, This, is thy God, that brought thee up out of Egypt, —and wrought great insults,

19 hast du in deiner großen Barmherzigkeit sie in der Wüste nicht verlassen: die Wolkensäule wich nicht von ihnen bei Tage, um sie auf dem Wege zu geleiten, noch die Feuersäule des Nachts, um ihnen den Weg zu erleuchten, auf dem sie ziehen sollten.

yet, thou, in thine abounding compassions, didst not forsake them in the desert, —the pillar of cloud, departed not from over them by day, to lead them in the way, nor the pillar of fire by night, to light up for them the way wherein they should go.

20 Und du verliehst ihnen deinen guten Geist, um sie zu belehren, und hast ihrem Munde dein Manna nicht vorenthalten und gabst ihnen Wasser für ihren Durst.

And, thy Good Spirit, thou gavest, to instruct them, —and, thy manna, thou withheldest not from their mouth, and, water, thou gavest them, for their thirst.

21 Und so versorgtest du sie vierzig Jahre in der Wüste, so daß ihnen nichts mangelte: ihre Kleider zerfielen nicht, und ihre Füße schwollen nicht an.

Yea, forty years, didst thou sustain them in the desert, they lacked nothing, —their mantles, waxed not old and, their feet, swelled not.

22 Und du gabst ihnen Königreiche und Völker zur Beute und verteiltest diese nach bestimmten Grenzen, und sie nahmen in Besitz das Land Sihons und das Land des Königs von Hesbon und das Land Ogs, des Königs von Basan.

And thou gavest them kingdoms, and peoples, and allotted to each of them a corner, —and they took possession of the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.

23 Und ihre Kinder machtest du so zahlreich wie die Sterne des Himmels und brachtest sie in das Land, in das sie hineinkommen sollten, um es in Besitz zu nehmen, wie du ihren Vätern verheißen hattest.

Their children also, didst thou multiply, like the stars of the heavens, —and didst bring them into the land which thou hadst promised their fathers they should enter to possess;

24 Und die Söhne kamen hinein und nahmen das Land in Besitz, und du unterwarfst ihnen die Bewohner des Landes, die Kanaaniter, und gabst sie in ihre Gewalt, sowohl ihre Könige als die Bewohner des Landes, daß sie mit ihnen verfahren sollten, wie es ihnen gutdünkte.

so the children entered and possessed the land, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and deliveredst them into their hand, —with their kings, and the peoples of the land, to do with them according to their pleasure;

25 Und sie eroberten befestigte Städte und fettes Land und nahmen Häuser in Besitz, die mit allerlei Gut angefüllt waren, sowie ausgehauene Brunnen, Weinberge und Ölgärten und Obstbäume in Menge. Da aßen sie und wurden satt und fett und schwelgten in deiner großen Segensfülle.

and they captured fortified cities and a fat soil, and took possession of houses full of every good thing, wells digged, vineyards and oliveyards and fruit-trees, in abundance, —so they did eat and were filled and became fat, and luxuriated in thy great goodness.

26 Aber sie wurden widerspenstig und empörten sich gegen dich und warfen dein Gesetz hinter ihren Rücken; ja, deine Propheten, die sie verwarnten, um sie zu dir zurückzuführen, töteten sie und vollführten große Lästerungen.

But they murmured and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their back, and, thy prophets, they slew, who testified against them that they might turn them back unto thee, —and they wrought great insults.

27 Da überliefertest du sie der Gewalt ihrer Bedränger; die bedrängten sie hart. Wenn sie aber in Bedrängnis waren, schrieen sie zu dir, und du erhörtest sie vom Himmel her und gabst ihnen nach deiner großen Barmherzigkeit Retter, damit diese sie aus der Gewalt ihrer Bedränger erretteten.

Therefore didst thou deliver them into the hand of their adversaries, who distressed them, —and, in the time of their distress, they made outcry unto thee, and, thou, out of the heavens, didst hear, and, according to thine abounding compassions, gavest them saviours, that they might save them out of the hand of their adversaries.

28 Sobald sie aber Ruhe hatten, thaten sie wiederum Böses vor dir, und so mußtest du sie aufs neue in die Gewalt ihrer Feinde geraten lassen, daß diese über sie herrschten. Dann schrieen sie abermals zu dir, und du erhörtest sie vom Himmel her und rettetest sie nach deiner großen Barmherzigkeit viele Male.

But, as soon as they had rest, they again wrought wickedness before thee, —and thou didst leave them in the hand of their enemies, who bare rule over them, yet, when they again made outcry unto thee, thou, from the heavens, didst hear and didst deliver them according to thy compassions, many times;

29 Und du verwarntest sie, um sie zu deinem Gesetze zurückzuführen; sie aber waren übermütig und hörten nicht auf deine Gebote und versündigten sich gegen deine Ordnungen, durch die doch leben soll, wer nach ihnen thut. Sie aber kehrten dir widerspenstig den Rücken zu und zeigten sich halsstarrig und gehorchten nicht.

and didst testify against them, to bring them back unto thy law, yet, they, dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy commandments, and, against thy regulations, they sinned, the which—if any son of earth shall do—then shall he live by them, —and yielded a rebellious shoulder, and, their neck, they stiffened, and hearkened not.

30 Und du verzogst mit deinem Einschreiten gegen sie viele Jahre und verwarntest sie durch deinen Geist vermittelst deiner Propheten, und doch hörten sie nicht. Da überliefertest du sie in die Gewalt der Bewohner der heidnischen Länder;

And thou didst suffer many years to pass over them, and didst testify against them by thy Spirit through thy prophets, yet did they not give ear, —therefore didst thou deliver them into the hand of the peoples of the lands.

31 aber in deiner großen Barmherzigkeit hast du ihnen nicht den Garaus gemacht und sie nicht gänzlich verlassen, denn du bist ein gnädiger und barmherziger Gott!

Yet, in thine abounding compassions, thou didst not make of them an end, neither didst thou forsake them, —for, a GOD gracious and full of compassion, thou art.

32 Und nun, unser Gott, du großer, gewaltiger und furchtbarer Gott, der an dem Gnadenbunde festhält, nicht möge dir gering erscheinen all das Ungemach, das uns betroffen hat, unsere Könige, unsere Obersten, unsere Priester, unsere Propheten, unsere Väter und dein ganzes Volk, seit den Tagen der Könige von Assyrien bis auf den heutigen Tag.

Now, therefore, O our God—the GOD great, mighty, and fearful—keeping the covenant and the lovingkindness, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, which hath come upon us—on our kings, on our rulers, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, —from the days of the kings of Assyria, until this day.

33 Doch du stehst gerecht da bei alledem, was über uns gekommen ist; denn du hast Treue geübt, wir aber haben gefrevelt.

But, thou, art righteous, as to all that hath fallen upon us, —for, faithfulness, hast thou wrought, whereas, we, have been lawless;

34 Und unsere Könige, unsere Obersten, unsere Priester und unsere Väter haben dein Gesetz nicht gehalten und haben nicht auf deine Gebote geachtet, noch auf deine Mahnungen, mit denen du sie verwarnt hast.

and, our kings, our rulers, our priests, and our fathers, have not kept thy law, —nor given heed unto thy commandments, or unto thy testimonies, wherewith thou hast testified against them.

35 Und obwohl sie in ihrem eigenen Reiche wohnten und inmitten der großen Segensfülle, die du ihnen schenktest, und in dem weiten und fetten Lande, das du ihnen überließest, haben sie dir doch nicht gedient und ihr schlimmes Treiben nicht aufgegeben.

But, they, in their kingdom, and in thine abundant goodness which thou gavest them, and in the broad and fat land which thou didst set before them, did not serve thee, neither turned they from their wicked doings.

36 Siehe, wir sind jetzt Knechte, und das Land, das du einst unseren Vätern verliehst, damit sie seine Früchte und seine Segensfülle genießen sollten, - in dem sind wir nun Knechte!

Lo! we, to-day, are bondmen—even upon the land which thou gavest our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, lo! we, are bondmen;

37 Seinen reichen Ertrag giebt es den Königen, die du um unserer Sünden willen über uns gesetzt hast; sie verfügen über unsere Leiber und über unser Vieh, wie es ihnen gutdünkt, und so sind wir in großer Bedrängnis!

and, the increase thereof, aboundeth unto the kings whom thou hast set over us, for our sins, —and, over our bodies, are they bearing rule, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and, in great distress, we are.

38 Auf Grund alles dessen gingen wir eine Verpflichtung ein und unterschrieben. Und auf dem Versiegelten waren unterzeichnet unsere Obersten, unsere Leviten und unsere Priester.

Seeing, therefore, all this, we, are plighting our faith, and putting it in writing, —and, upon the sealed scroll, are our rulers, our Levites, our priests.
