Lukas 14
1 Und es geschah, da er in das Haus eines der Oberen der Pharisäer kam am Sabbat um zu speisen, waren sie auch da und lauerten auf ihn.
One day--it was a Sabbath--He was taking a meal at the house of one of the Rulers of the Pharisee party, while they were closely watching Him.
2 Und siehe, ein wassersüchtiger Mensch trat vor ihn.
In front of Him was a man suffering from dropsy.
3 Und Jesus hob an und sagte zu den Gesetzesmännern und Pharisäern: ist es erlaubt am Sabbat zu heilen oder nicht?
This led Jesus to ask the lawyers and Pharisees, "Is it allowable to cure people on the Sabbath?"
4 Sie aber blieben stille. Und er faßte ihn an, heilte ihn und entließ ihn.
They gave Him no answer; so He took hold of the man, cured him, and sent him away.
5 Und zu ihnen sagte er: Wer von euch, wenn ihm sein Sohn oder sein Ochse in einen Brunnen fällt, wird ihn nicht alsbald heraufziehen am Sabbattage?
Then He turned to them and said, "Which of you shall have a child or an ox fall into a well on the Sabbath day, and will not immediately lift him out?"
6 Und sie vermochten darauf nichts zu erwidern.
To this they could make no reply.
7 Er sprach aber zu den Geladenen ein Gleichnis, da er beobachtete, wie sie sich die ersten Plätze aussuchten, und sagte zu ihnen:
Then, when He noticed that the invited guests chose the best seats, He used this as an illustration and said to them,
8 wenn du von jemanden geladen wirst zur Hochzeit, so nimm nicht den ersten Sitz, damit nicht etwa ein Vornehmerer als du von ihm geladen sei,
"When any one invites you to a wedding banquet, do not take the best seat, lest perhaps some more honoured guest than you may have been asked,
9 und es komme herzu, der dich und ihn geladen hat, und sage zu dir: mache diesem Platz, und du hast alsdann mit Scham den letzten Platz einzunehmen.
and the man who invited you both will come and will say to you, 'Make room for this guest,' and then you, ashamed, will move to the lowest place.
10 Sondern wenn du geladen wirst, so gehe hin und lasse dich nieder auf den letzten Platz, damit der dich geladen hat, wenn er kommt, zu dir sage: Freund, rücke weiter hinauf; dann widerfährt dir die Ehre vor allen deinen Mitgästen.
On the contrary, when you are invited go and take the lowest place, that when your host comes round he may say to you, 'My friend, come up higher.' This will be doing you honour in the presence of all the other guests.
11 Denn jeder, der sich selbst erhöht, wird erniedrigt werden, und wer sich selbst erniedrigt, wird erhöht werden.
For whoever uplifts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be uplifted.
12 Er sagte aber zu dem, der ihn geladen hatte: wenn du ein Frühstück oder Abendmahl richtest, so lade nicht deine Freunde noch deine Brüder, noch deine Verwandten, noch reiche Nachbarn, daß sie dich etwa wieder einladen und dir so Vergeltung werde.
Also to His host, who had invited Him, He said, "When you give a breakfast or a dinner, do not invite your friends or brothers or relatives or rich neighbours, lest perhaps they should invite you in return and a requital be made you.
13 Sondern wenn du eine Gastung hältst, so lade Arme, Krüppel, Lahme, Blinde,
But when you entertain, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind;
14 so sollst du selig sein, weil sie es dir nicht vergelten können; denn es wird dir vergolten werden in der Auferstehung der Gerechten.
and you will be blessed, because they have no means of requiting you, but there will be requital for you at the Resurrection of the righteous."
15 Als aber einer von den Mitgästen dieses hörte, sagte er zu ihm: selig, wer speiset im Reiche Gottes.
After listening to this teaching, one of His fellow guests said to Him, "Blessed is he who shall feast in God's Kingdom."
16 Er aber sagte zu ihm: ein Mensch hielt ein großes Mahl und lud viele ein,
"A man once gave a great dinner," replied Jesus, "to which he invited a large number of guests.
17 und sandte seinen Knecht aus, zur Stunde des Abendmahls den Geladenen anzusagen: kommet, denn es ist jetzt bereit.
At dinner-time he sent his servant to announce to those who had been invited, "'Come, for things are now ready.'
18 Und sie fiengen mit einem Male alle an, sich zu entschuldigen. Der erste sagte zu ihm: ich habe einen Acker gekauft, und muß notwendig hingehen ihn zu besehen; ich bitte dich, nimm mich für entschuldigt.
"But they all without exception began to excuse themselves. The first told him, "'I have purchased a piece of land, and must of necessity go and look at it. Pray hold me excused.'
19 Und ein anderer sagte: ich habe fünf Joch Ochsen gekauft und gehe eben sie zu untersuchen; ich bitte dich, nimm mich für entschuldigt.
"A second pleaded, "'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and am on my way to try them. Pray hold me excused.'
20 Und ein anderer sagte: ich habe eine Frau genommen, und darum kann ich nicht kommen.
"Another said, "'I am just married. It is impossible for me to come.'
21 Und der Knecht stellte sich und meldete dieses seinem Herrn. Da ward der Hausherr zornig und sagte zu seinem Knecht: eiligst gehe in die Straßen und Gassen der Stadt, und bringe die Armen und Krüppel und Blinden und Lahmen herein.
"So the servant came and brought these answers to his master, and they stirred his anger. "'Go out quickly,' he said, 'into the streets of the city--the wide ones and the narrow. You will see poor men, and crippled, blind, lame: fetch them all in here.'
22 Und der Knecht sagte: Herr es ist geschehen, was du befohlen hast, und es ist noch Raum.
"Soon the servant reported the result, saying, "'Sir, what you ordered is done, and there is room still.'
23 Und der Herr sprach zu dem Knecht: gehe hinaus auf die Wege und an die Zäune und nötige sie herein, damit mein Haus voll werde.
"'Go out,' replied the master, 'to the high roads and hedge-rows, and compel the people to come in, so that my house may be filled.
24 Denn ich sage euch, keiner von jenen Männern, die geladen waren, wird mein Mahl kosten.
For I tell you that not one of those who were invited shall taste my dinner.'"
25 Es zogen aber große Massen mit ihm, und er kehrte sich um und sprach zu ihnen:
On His journey vast crowds attended Him, towards whom He turned and said,
26 Wenn einer zu mir kommt und haßt nicht seinen Vater, Mutter, Weib, Kinder, Brüder, Schwestern, ja sein eigenes Leben, so kann er nicht mein Jünger sein.
"If any one is coming to me who does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes and his own life also, he cannot be a disciple of mine.
27 Wer nicht sein Kreuz trägt und geht mir nach, kann nicht mein Jünger sein.
No one who does not carry his own cross and come after me can be a disciple of mine.
28 Denn wer von euch, wenn er einen Thurm bauen will, sitzt nicht zuerst hin und berechnet die Kosten, ob er Mittel hat es hinauszuführen?
"Which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not sit down first and calculate the cost, asking if he has the means to finish it? --
29 Damit nicht, wenn er den Grund gelegt und kann es nicht vollenden, alle Zuschauer anfangen, ihn zu verspotten,
lest perhaps, when he has laid the foundation and is unable to finish, all who see it shall begin to jeer at him,
30 und zu sagen: dieser Mensch hat angefangen zu bauen, und konnte es nicht hinausführen.
saying, 'This man began to build, but could not finish.'
31 Oder welcher König, der auszieht um Krieg zu führen mit einem anderen König, sitzt nicht zuerst hin und hält Rat, ob er im Stande ist, mit zehntausend dem zu begegnen, der mit zwanzigtausend gegen ihn anrückt?
Or what king, marching to encounter another king in war, does not first sit down and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand men to meet the one who is advancing against him with twenty thousand?
32 Wofern aber nicht, so schickt er eine Gesandtschaft an ihn, so lange er noch fern ist, und wirbt um Frieden.
If not, while the other is still a long way off, he sends messengers and sues for peace.
33 So kann denn keiner von euch, der nicht allem was er hat entsagt, mein Jünger sein.
Just as no one of you who does not detach himself from all that belongs to him can be a disciple of mine.
34 Das Salz ist wohl gut, wenn aber auch das Salz taub wird, womit soll es hergestellt werden?
"Salt is good: but if even the salt has become tasteless, what will you use to season it?
35 Es ist weder aufs Land noch auf den Mist brauchbar. Man wirft es hinaus. Wer Ohren hat zu hören, der höre.
Neither for land nor dunghill is it of any use; they throw it away. Listen, every one who has ears to listen with!"
