1 Da zogen die Israeliten aus, und die Gemeinde versammelte sich wie ein Mann von Dan bis Beerseba, dazu das Land Gilead, vor Jahwe in Mizpa.
Then all the children of Israel went out, and the Congregation was gathered together as one man, from Dan to Beersheba, with the land of Gilead, vnto the Lord in Mizpeh.
2 Und die Häupter des ganzen Volkes, alle Stämme Israels, stellten sich bei der Versammlung des Volkes Gottes - 400000 Mann zu Fuß, mit Schwertern bewaffnet.
And the chiefe of all the people, and all the tribes of Israel assembled in the Congregation of the people of God foure hundreth thousand footemen that drewe sword.
3 Aber die Benjaminiten hörten, daß die Israeliten nach Mizpa gezogen seien. Da fragten die Israeliten: Sagt an, wie ist diese schlimme That geschehen?
(Now the children of Beniamin heard that the children of Israel were gone vp to Mizpeh) Then the children of Israel saide, Howe is this wickednesse committed?
4 Da antwortete der levitische Mann, der Mann des gemordeten Weibes also: Nach Gibea, das in Benjamin liegt, war ich mit meinem Kebsweibe gekommen, um über Nacht zu bleiben.
And the same Leuite, the womans husband that was slaine, answered and saide, I came vnto Gibeah that is in Beniamin with my concubine to lodge,
5 Da zeigten sich die Bürger von Gibea feindselig gegen mich und umringten Nachts in feindseliger Absicht gegen mich das Haus: mich selbst dachten sie umzubringen und meinem Kebsweibe haben sie Gewalt angethan, daß sie starb.
And the men of Gibeah arose against me, and beset the house round about vpon mee by night, thinking to haue slaine me, and haue forced my concubine that she is dead.
6 Da erfaßte ich mein Kebsweib, zerstückte sie und sandte sie im ganzen Bereiche des Erbbesitzes Israels umher; denn sie haben ein Verbrechen und eine Schandthat in Israel verübt!
Then I tooke my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the countrey of the inheritance of Israel: for they haue committed abomination and villenie in Israel.
7 Ihr seid hier alle zugegen, Israeliten! So entscheidet nun und ratet allhier!
Behold, ye are al children of Israel: giue your aduise, and counsell herein.
8 Da erhob sich das ganze Volk wie ein Mann und rief: Keiner von uns darf heimgehen, keiner sich nach seinem Hause begeben!
Then all the people arose as one man, saying, There shall not a man of vs goe to his tent, neither any turne into his house.
9 Nun denn, das ist das Verfahren, das wir gegen Gibea anwenden wollen: über sie mit dem Lose!
But now this is that thing which we will do to Gibeah: we wil goe vp by lot against it,
10 Und zwar wollen wir zehn Mann von hundert von allen Stämmen Israels und hundert von tausend und tausend von zehntausend nehmen, daß sie Zehrung für die Leute holen, damit man mit Gibea in Benjamin ganz so verfahre, wie die Schandthat verdient, die es in Israel verübt hat.
And we wil take ten men of the hundreth throughout al the tribes of Israel, and an hundreth of the thousand, and a thousand of ten thousand to bring vitaile for the people that they may do (when they come to Gibeah of Beniamin) according to all the villeny, that it hath done in Israel.
11 Da versammelten sich alle Israeliten bei der Stadt, wie ein Mann verbündet.
So all the men of Israel were gathered against the citie, knit together, as one man.
12 Hierauf sandten die Stämme Israels Leute im ganzen Stamme Benjamin umher mit der Botschaft: Was ist das für eine schlimme That, die unter euch geschehen ist?
And the tribes of Israel sent men through al the tribe of Beniamin, saying, What wickednesse is this that is committed among you?
13 So gebt nun die nichtswürdigen Menschen in Gibea heraus, daß wir sie umbringen und das Böse aus Israel wegtilgen! Aber die Benjaminiten weigerten sich, dem Verlangen ihrer Volksgenossen, der Israeliten, Folge zu leisten.
Nowe therefore deliuer vs those wicked men which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away euill from Israel: but the children of Beniamin would not obey the voyce of their brethren the children of Israel.
14 Da versammelten sich die Benjaminiten aus den übrigen Städten nach Gibea, um zum Kampfe mit den Israeliten auszurücken.
But ye children of Beniamin gathered them selues together out of the cities vnto Gibeah, to come out and fight against the children of Israel.
15 Und zwar belief sich die Zahl der Benjaminiten aus den Städten an jenem Tag auf 26000 mit Schwertern Bewaffnete, abgesehen von den Bewohnern Gibeas, deren Zahl sich auf 700 auserlesene Männer belief.
And ye children of Beniamin were nombred at that time out of the cities sixe and twenty thousand men that drewe sworde, beside the inhabitants of Gibeah, which were nombred seuen hundreth chosen men.
16 Von allen diesen Leuten waren 700 auserlesene Männer linkshändig: jeder derselben verstand haarscharf mit Steinen zu schleudern, ohne zu fehlen.
Of all this people were seuen hundreth chosen men, being left handed: all these could sling stones at an heare breadth, and not faile.
17 Die Männer von Israel hingegen beliefen sich ohne Benjamin auf 400000 mit Schwertern Bewaffnete, lauter Kriegsleute.
Also the men of Israel, beside Beniamin, were nombred foure hundreth thousande men that drew sword, euen all men of warre.
18 Die machten sich auf den Weg nach Bethel hinauf und befragten Gott. Und zwar fragten die Israeliten: Wer von uns soll zuerst zum Kampfe mit den Benjaminiten ausrücken? Jahwe antwortete: Zuerst Juda.
And the children of Israel arose, and went vp to the house of God, and asked of God, saying, Which of vs shall goe vp first to fight against the children of Beniamin? And the Lord said, Iudah shalbe first.
19 Da brachen die Israeliten am Morgen auf und lagerten sich vor Gibea,
Then the children of Israel arose vp earely and camped against Gibeah.
20 und die Männer von Israel rückten aus zum Kampfe gegen Benjamin und die Männer von Israel stellten sich ihnen gegenüber in Schlachtordnung auf in der Richtung nach Gibea zu.
And the men of Israel went out to battell against Beniamin, and the men of Israel put themselues in aray to fight against the beside Gibeah.
21 Die Benjaminiten aber rückten aus Gibea aus und streckten an jenem Tage 22000 Mann von Israel zu Boden.
And the children of Beniamin came out of Gibeah, and slewe downe to the ground of the Israelites that day two and twentie thousand men.
22 Da zogen die Israeliten hinauf und weinten vor Jahwe bis zum Abend und befragten Jahwe und sprachen: Soll ich noch einmal zum Kampfe mit meinen Volksgenossen, den Benjaminiten, ausrücken: Jahwe antwortete: Rückt aus gegen sie!
And the people, the men of Israel plucked vp their hearts, and set their battel againe in aray in the place where they put them in aray the first day.
23 Da ermannte sich das Volk, die Männer von Israel, und stellten sich an dem Platze, wo sie sich am ersten Tag aufgestellt hatten, nochmals in Schlachtordnung auf.
(For the children of Israel had gone vp and wept before the Lord vnto the euening, and had asked of the Lord, saying, Shall I goe againe to battel against the children of Beniamin my brethren? and the Lord said, Go vp against them)
24 Als nun die Israeliten am zweiten Tage wieder gegen die Benjaminiten anrückten,
Then the children of Israel came neere against the children of Beniamin the second day.
25 zogen ihnen die Benjaminiten am zweiten Tag aus Gibea entgegen und streckten von den Israeliten abermals 18000 Mann zu Boden - insgesamt mit Schwertern Bewaffnete.
Also the second day Beniamin came forth to meete them out of Gibeah, and slewe downe to the grounde of the children of Israel againe eighteene thousand men: all they could handle the sword.
26 Da machten sich sämtliche Israeliten und das ganze Volk auf den Weg nach Bethel hinauf und verweilten hier weinend vor Jahwe und fasteten an jenem Tage bis zum Abend. Dann brachten sie Brand- und Heilsopfer vor Jahwe dar.
Then al the children of Israel went vp and all the people came also vnto the house of God, and wept and sate there before the Lord and fasted that day vnto the euening, and offred burnt offrings and peace offrings before the Lord.
27 Darauf befragten die Israeliten Jahwe - dort befand sich nämlich zu jener Zeit die Lade mit dem Gesetze Gottes,
And the children of Israel asked the Lord (for there was the Arke of the couenat of God in those dayes,
28 und Pinehas, der Sohn Eleasars, des Sohnes Aarons, wartete zu jener Zeit des Dienstes vor ihr - und sprachen: Soll ich noch einmal zum Kampfe mit meinen Volksgenossen, den Benjaminiten, ausrücken oder soll ich es lassen? Jahwe antwortete: Zieht hin, denn morgen gebe ich sie in deine Gewalt.
And Phinehas the sonne of Eleazar, the sonne of Aaron stoode before it at that time) saying, Shall I yet goe anie more to battel against the children of Beniamin my brethren, or shall I cease? And the Lord said, Go vp: for to morowe I will deliuer them into your hand.
29 Nun legte Israel ringsum Leute in den Hinterhalt gegen Gibea;
And Israel set men to lie in waite round about Gibeah.
30 dann rückten die Israeliten am dritten Tage gegen die Benjaminiten heran und stellen sich gegen Gibea in Schlachtordnung auf wie die vorigen Male.
And the children of Israel went vp against the children of Beniamin the third day, and put theselues in aray against Gibeah, as at other times.
31 Die Benjaminiten aber rückten gegen das Volks aus, wurden von der Stadt fortgelockt und begannen, wie die vorigen Male, etliche von dem Volke zu erschlagen, auf den Straßen, deren eine nach Bethel hinaufführt, während die andere durch Gefilde nach Gibea führt - gegen 30 Mann von Israel.
Then the children of Beniamin comming out against the people, were drawen from the citie: and they began to smite of ye people and kill as at other times, euen by the wayes in the fielde (whereof one goeth vp to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah) vpon a thirtie men of Israel.
32 Da dachten die Benjaminiten: Sie erliegen uns wie das erste Mal. Die Israeliten hingegen hatten verabredet: Wir wollen fliehen, daß wir sie von der Stadt weglocken nach den Straßen hin.
(For the children of Beniamin sayd, They are fallen before vs, as at the first. But the children of Israel saide, Let vs flee and plucke them away from the citie vnto the hie wayes)
33 Nun brachen alle Männer Israels von ihrem Standort auf und stellten sich bei Baal Thamar auf, und die Israeliten im Hinterhalte brachen aus ihrem Standort im Westen von Geba hervor.
And all the men of Israel rose vp out of their place, and put themselues in aray at Baal-tamar: and the men that lay in wayte of the Israelites came forth of their place, euen out of the medowes of Gibeah,
34 Darauf rückten Gibea gegenüber 10000 aus ganz Israel erlesene Männer heran, und es entspann sich ein heftiger Kampf, wobei das Verderben sie unversehens ereilte.
And they came ouer against Gibeah, ten thousande chosen men of all Israel, and the battell was sore: for they knewe not that the euill was neere them.
35 So ließ Jahwe Benjamin vor Israel erliegen und die Israeliten hieben von Benjamin an jenem Tage 25100 Mann nieder, lauter mit Schwertern Bewaffnete.
And the Lord smote Beniamin before Israel, and the children of Israel destroyed of the Beniamites the same day fiue and twenty thousand and an hundreth men: all they could handle the sword.
36 Und die Benjaminiten erkannten, daß sie unterlegen waren. Nun gaben die Israeliten Benjamin Raum; denn sie verließen sich auf den Hinterhalt, den sie Gibea gelegt hatten.
So the children of Beniamin sawe that they were striken downe: for the men of Israel gaue place to the Beniamites, because they trusted to the men that lay in waite, which they had laide beside Gibeah.
37 Da brachen die im Hinterhalte plötzlich gegen Gibea vor, und der Hinterhalt zog hin und hieb sämtliche Bewohner der Stadt mit dem Schwerte nieder.
And they that lay in wait hasted, and brake forth toward Gibeah, and the ambushment drewe themselues along, and smote all the citie with the edge of the sword.
38 Es war aber zwischen den Israeliten und dem Hinterhalte die Verabredung getroffen worden, daß sie ein Rauchsignal aus der Stadt aufsteigen lassen sollten.
Also the men of Israel had appoynted a certaine time with the ambushmentes, that they should make a great flame and smoke rise vp out of the citie.
39 Als sich nun die Israeliten im Verlaufe des Kampfes zur Flucht wendeten, und die Benjaminiten schon begonnen hatten, etliche von den Israeliten - etwa dreißig Mann - zu erschlagen, weil sie dachten: Sie sind uns ja erlegen, wie in der ersten Schlacht! -
And when the men of Israel retired in the battel, Beniamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirtie persons: for they said, Surely they are striken downe before vs, as in the first battell.
40 da begann das Signal in Gestalt einer Rauchwolke von der Stadt aufzusteigen, und als die Benjaminiten zurückschauten, da stand bereits die ganze Stadt in Flammen, die bis zum Himmel emporschlugen.
But when the flame bega to arise out of the citie, as a pillar of smoke, the Beniamites looked backe, and behold, the flame of the citie began to ascend vp to heauen.
41 Da machten die Israeliten kehrt, und die Benjaminiten gerieten in Bestürzung; denn sie erkannten nun, daß das Verderben sie ereilt hatte.
Then the men of Israel turned againe, and the men of Beniamin were astonied: for they saw that euill was neere vnto them.
42 Sie zogen sich vor den Israeliten in der Richtung nach der Steppe zurück, aber der Kampf gegen sie tobte weiter, und die aus den Städten hieben ihn in seiner Mitte nieder.
Therefore they fled before the men of Israel vnto the way of the wildernesse, but the battell ouertooke them: also they which came out of the cities, slew them among them.
43 Sie umzingelten Benjamin, verfolgten ihn; am Ruheplatze traten sie ihn nieder bis östlich gegenüber von Gibea.
Thus they compassed the Beniamites about, and chased them at ease, and ouerranne them, euen ouer against Gibeah on the Eastside.
44 Dabei fielen von Benjamin 18000 Mann, lauter tapfere Männer.
And there were slaine of Beniamin eyghteene thousad men, which were all men of warre.
45 Da wandten sie sich zur Flucht nach der Steppe gegen den Felsen Rimmon hin; aber jene hielten unter ihnen auf den Straßen noch eine Nachlese von 5000 Mann und setzten ihnen nach bis nach Gideom, wobei sie noch 2000 Mann von ihnen erschlugen.
And they turned and fled to the wildernes vnto the rocke of Rimmon: and the Israelites glayned of them by the way fiue thousand men, and pursued after them vnto Gidom, and slewe two thousand men of them,
46 So betrug die Gesamtheit der gefallenen Benjaminiten an jenem Tage 25000 mit Schwertern bewaffnete, lauter tapfere Männer.
So that all that were slayne that day of Beniamin, were fiue and twentie thousand men that drewe sword, which were all men of warre:
47 Da wandten sie sich zur Flucht nach der Steppe gegen den Felsen Rimmon hin, 600 Mann stark, und verweilten vier Monate beim Felsen Rimmon.
But sixe hundreth men turned and fled to the wildernesse vnto the rocke of Rimmon, and abode in the rocke of Rimmon foure moneths.
48 Die Israeliten aber kehrten zurück zu den noch übrigen Benjaminiten und hieben sie mit dem Schwerte nieder, sowohl Menschen als Vieh, alles, was sich vorfand; dazu steckten sie alle vorhandenen Städte in Brand.
Then the men of Israel returned vnto the children of Beniamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword from the men of the citie vnto the beasts, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they coulde come by.
