Johannes 13
1 Vor dem Passafest aber, da Jesus wußte, daß seine Stunde gekommen war, daß er hingienge aus dieser Welt zum Vater, bewies er den Seinigen die Liebe, die er zu ihnen gehabt in der Welt, bis ans Ende.
Now just before the Feast of the Passover this incident took place. Jesus knew that the time had come for Him to leave this world and go to the Father; and having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.
2 Und bei einer Mahlzeit, als der Teufel schon dem Judas Simons Sohn dem Iskarioten in das Herz gegeben hatte, ihn zu verraten,
While supper was proceeding, the Devil having by this time suggested to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, the thought of betraying Him, Jesus,
3 in dem Bewußtsein, daß der Vater ihm alles in die Hände gegeben, und daß er von Gott ausgegangen sei und zu Gott hingehe,
although He knew that the Father had put everything into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was now going to God,
4 erhebt er sich vom Mahle, legt die Kleider ab, nahm eine Schürze und gürtete sich damit.
rose from the table, threw off His upper garments, and took a towel and tied it round Him.
5 Dann gießt er Wasser in den Waschkrug und fieng an den Jüngern die Füße zu netzen, und mit der Schürze zu trocknen, mit der er sich gegürtet hatte.
Then He poured water into a basin, and proceeded to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel which He had put round Him.
6 So kommt er an Simon Petrus, der sagt zu ihm: Herr, du netzest mir die Füße?
When He came to Simon Peter, Peter objected. "Master," he said, "are you going to wash my feet?"
7 Antwortete Jesus und sprach zu ihm: was ich thue, verstehst du jetzt nicht; du wirst es aber hernach erkennen.
"What I am doing," answered Jesus, "for the present you do not know, but afterwards you shall know."
8 Sagt zu ihm Petrus: du sollst mir nimmermehr die Füße netzen in Ewigkeit. Antwortete Jesus ihm: wenn ich dich nicht netze, hast du keinen Teil an mir. (aiōn g165)
"Never, while the world lasts," said Peter, "shall you wash my feet." "If I do not wash you," replied Jesus, "you have no share with me." (aiōn g165)
9 Sagt zu ihm Simon Petrus: Herr, nicht blos meine Füße, sondern auch die Hände und das Haupt.
"Master," said Peter, "wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head."
10 Jesus sagt zu ihm: der abgewaschen ist, hat nicht nötig, sich weiter netzen zu lassen, sondern er ist ganz rein: ihr seid auch rein, doch nicht alle.
"Any one who has lately bathed," said Jesus, "does not need to wash more than his feet, but is clean all over. And you my disciples are clean, and yet this is not true of all of you."
11 Denn er kannte seinen Verräter; darum sagte er: ihr seid nicht alle rein.
For He knew who was betraying Him, and that was why He said, "You are not all of you clean."
12 Als er ihnen die Füße genetzt und seine Kleider wieder genommen und sich niedergesetzt hatte, sprach er zu ihnen: Versteht ihr, was ich euch gethan habe?
So after He had washed their feet, put on His garments again, and returned to the table, He said to them, "Do you understand what I have done to you?
13 Ihr nennet mich Meister und Herr, und ihr habt recht, denn ich bin es.
You call me 'The Rabbi' and 'The Master,' and rightly so, for such I am.
14 Wenn nun ich, der Herr und Meister, euch die Füße genetzt habe, so seid auch ihr schuldig, einander die Füße zu netzen.
If I then, your Master and Rabbi, have washed your feet, it is also your duty to wash one another's feet.
15 Denn ich habe euch ein Vorbild gegeben, daß auch ihr thuet, wie ich euch gethan habe.
For I have set you an example in order that you may do what I have done to you.
16 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: der Knecht ist nicht mehr als sein Herr, noch der Abgesandte mehr als der ihn gesandt hat.
In most solemn truth I tell you that a servant is not superior to his master, nor is a messenger superior to him who sent him.
17 So ihr das wisset, selig seid ihr, wenn ihr darnach thut.
If you know all this, blessed are you if you act accordingly.
18 Nicht von euch allen rede ich, denn ich weiß, welche ich auserwählt habe; aber es soll die Schrift erfüllt werden: der mit mir das Brot isset, hat seine Ferse wider mich erhoben.
I am not speaking of all of you. I know whom I have chosen, but things are as they are in order that the Scripture may be fulfilled, which says, 'He who eats my bread has lifted up his heel against me.'
19 Nunmehr sage ich es euch, bevor es geschieht, daß ihr glaubet, wenn es geschieht, daß das auf mich geht.
From this time forward I tell you things before they happen, in order that when they do happen you may believe that I am He.
20 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: wer aufnimmt, den ich sende, nimmt mich auf; wer aber mich aufnimmt, nimmt den auf, der mich gesandt hat.
In most solemn truth I tell you that he who receives whoever I send receives me, and that he who receives me receives Him who sent me."
21 Als Jesus dieses gesagt, ward er erschüttert im Geiste und zeugte und sprach: wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: einer von euch wird mich verraten.
After speaking thus Jesus was troubled in spirit and said with deep earnestness, "In most solemn truth I tell you that one of you will betray me."
22 Die Jünger sahen einander an, ratlos, wen er meine.
The disciples began looking at one another, at a loss to know to which of them He was referring.
23 Nun lag einer von seinen Jüngern am Busen Jesus, den Jesus lieb hatte.
There was at table one of His disciples--the one Jesus loved-- reclining with his head on Jesus's bosom.
24 Dem also winkt Simon Petrus und sagt zu ihm: frage du, wen er meint.
Making a sign therefore to him, Simon Peter said, "Tell us to whom he is referring."
25 Der neigte sich demgemäß gegen die Brust Jesus und sagte zu ihm: Herr, wer ist es?
So he, having his head on Jesus's bosom, leaned back and asked, "Master, who is it?"
26 Da antwortete Jesus: der ist es, dem ich den Bissen eintauchen und geben werde. Da tauchte er den Bissen ein, nimmt ihn, und gibt ihn dem Judas, dem Sohn Simons des Iskarioten.
"It is the one," answered Jesus, "for whom I shall dip this piece of bread and to whom I shall give it." Accordingly He dipped the piece of bread, and took it and gave it to Judas, the son of the Iscariot Simon.
27 Und nach dem Bissen, hierauf fuhr der Satan in ihn, da spricht Jesus zu ihm: was du thust, thue bald.
Then, after Judas had received the piece of bread, Satan entered into him. "Lose no time about it," said Jesus to him.
28 Aber keiner von den Tischgenossen verstand, was er ihm damit gesagt.
But why He said this no one else at the table understood.
29 Einige meinten wohl, weil Judas den Beutel hatte, Jesus sage zu ihm: kaufe was wir auf das Fest nötig haben, oder er solle den Armen etwas geben.
Some, however, supposed that because Judas had the money-box Jesus meant, "Buy what we require for the Festival," or that he should give something to the poor.
30 Da denn jener den Bissen genommen hatte, gieng er alsbald hinaus. Es war aber Nacht.
So Judas took the piece of bread and immediately went out. And it was night.
31 Als er nun hinausgegangen, spricht Jesus: jetzt ist der Sohn des Menschen verherrlicht, und Gott ist verherrlicht durch ihn.
So when he was gone out, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him.
32 Wenn Gott verherrlicht ist durch ihn, so wird auch Gott ihn verherrlichen durch sich, ja er wird ihn alsbald verherrlichen.
Moreover God will glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him without delay.
33 Kinder, nur noch eine kleine Weile bin ich bei euch: dann werdet ihr mich suchen, und wie ich den Juden sagte: wo ich hingehe, könnet ihr nicht hinkommen, so sage ich jetzt auch zu euch.
Dear children, I am still with you a little longer. You will seek me, but, as I said to the Jews, 'Where I am going you cannot come,' so for the present I say to you.
34 Ein neues Gebot gebe ich euch, daß ihr einander liebet, so wie ich euch geliebt habe, daß so auch ihr einander liebet.
A new commandment I give you, to love one another; that as I have loved you, you also may love one another.
35 Daran wird jedermann erkennen, daß ihr meine Jünger seid, wenn ihr Liebe unter euch habt.
It is by this that every one will know that you are my disciples--if you love one another."
36 Sagt zu ihm Simon Petrus: Herr, wo gehst du hin? Antwortete ihm Jesus: wo ich hingehe, kannst du mir jetzt nicht folgen; du wirst aber später folgen.
"Master," inquired Simon Peter, "where are you going?" "Where I am going," replied Jesus, "you cannot be my follower now, but you shall be later."
37 Sagt zu ihm Petrus: Herr, warum kann ich dir jetzt nicht folgen? mein Leben will ich für dich lassen.
"Master," asked Peter again, "why cannot I follow you now? I will lay down my life on your behalf.
38 Antwortet Jesus: dein Leben willst du für mich lassen? Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage dir: der Hahn wird nicht krähen, ehe du mich dreimal verleugnet hast.
"You say you will lay down your life on my behalf!" said Jesus; "in most solemn truth I tell you that the cock will not crow before you have three times disowned me."
