Job 28
1 Wohl giebt es einen Fundort für das Silber, eine Stätte für das Gold, das man läutert.
“Surely there is a mine for silver and a place where gold is refined.
2 Eisen wird aus dem Erdreiche geholt, und Gestein schmilzt man zu Erz.
Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore.
3 Ein Ende hat man der Finsternis gemacht und bis zur äußersten Grenze durchforscht man das im tiefsten Dunkel verborgene Gestein.
Man puts an end to the darkness; he probes the farthest recesses for ore in deepest darkness.
4 Man bricht einen Schacht fern von den droben Wohnenden; vergessen von dem droben schreitenden Fuß, fern von den Menschen hangen, schweben sie.
Far from human habitation he cuts a shaft in places forgotten by the foot of man. Far from men he dangles and sways.
5 Aus der Erde geht Brotkorn hervor, und ihr Tiefen werden wie mit Feuer umgewühlt.
Food may come from the earth, but from below it is transformed as by fire.
6 Des Saphirs Fundstätte ist ihr Gestein, Goldstäubchen werden ihm zu teil.
Its rocks are the source of sapphires, containing flecks of gold.
7 Den Weg kennt nicht der Adler, noch erspäht ihn des Geiers Auge.
No bird of prey knows that path; no falcon’s eye has seen it.
8 Nicht betreten ihn die stolzen Raubtiere, noch schreitet auf ihm der Leu.
Proud beasts have never trodden it; no lion has ever prowled over it.
9 An den Kiesel legt man die Hand, wühlt von Grund aus die Berge um.
The miner strikes the flint; he overturns mountains at their base.
10 Durch die Felsen schlägt man Gänge, und allerlei Kostbares erschaut das Auge.
He hews out channels in the rocks, and his eyes spot every treasure.
11 Die Wasseradern verbindet man, daß sie nicht thränen, und bringt Verborgenes ans Licht.
He stops up the sources of the streams to bring what is hidden to light.
12 Die Weisheit aber, wo findet man sie, und wo ist der Fundort der Erkenntnis?
But where can wisdom be found, and where does understanding dwell?
13 Kein Mensch kennt den Weg zu ihr, und sie ist nicht zu finden im Lande der Lebendigen.
No man can know its value, nor is it found in the land of the living.
14 Die Meerestiefe spricht: “In mir ist sie nicht!” und das Meer spricht: “Sie ist nicht bei mir!”
The ocean depths say, ‘It is not in me,’ while the sea declares, ‘It is not with me.’
15 Mit gediegenem Golde wird sie nicht erkauft, noch wird Silber dargewogen als ihr Preis.
It cannot be bought with gold, nor can its price be weighed out in silver.
16 Sie läßt sich nicht aufwiegen mit Ophirgold, mit kostbarem Schoham und Sapphir.
It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, in precious onyx or sapphire.
17 Gold und Glas kommen ihr nicht gleich, noch tauscht man sie ein für güldenes Geschirr.
Neither gold nor crystal can compare to it, nor jewels of fine gold be exchanged for it.
18 Korallen und Krystall kommen nicht in Betracht, und der Besitz der Weisheit geht über Perlen.
Coral and quartz are unworthy of mention; the price of wisdom is beyond rubies.
19 Äthiopiens Topas kommt ihr nicht gleich, mit reinstem Golde wird sie nicht aufgewogen.
Topaz from Cush cannot compare to it, nor can it be valued in pure gold.
20 Die Weisheit also - woher kommt sie, und wo ist der Fundort der Erkenntnis?
From where then does wisdom come, and where does understanding dwell?
21 Verhüllt ist sie vor den Augen aller Lebenden, auch den Vögeln unter dem Himmel ist sie verborgen.
It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing and concealed from the birds of the air.
22 Abgrund und Tod sprechen: “Wir haben mit unseren Ohren ein Gerücht von ihr gehört.”
Abaddon and Death say, ‘We have heard a rumor about it.’
23 Gott kennt den Weg zu ihr und er weiß um ihren Fundort.
But God understands its way, and He knows its place.
24 Denn er schaut bis zu der Erde Enden; was irgend unter dem Himmel ist, sieht er.
For He looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens.
25 Als er des Windes Wucht abwog und dem Wasser sein Maß bestimmte,
When God fixed the weight of the wind and measured out the waters,
26 als er dem Regen sein Gesetz gab, und seinen Pfad dem Wasserstrahle,
when He set a limit for the rain and a path for the thunderbolt,
27 da sah er sie und machte sie kund, stellte sie hin und durchforschte sie.
then He looked at wisdom and appraised it; He established it and searched it out.
28 Und zum Menschen sprach er: Siehe, Furcht des Herrn, das ist Weisheit, und das Böse meiden, ist Verstand!
And He said to man, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’”
