Esra 4
1 Als aber die Widersacher Judas und Benjamins hörten, daß die aus der Gefangenschaft Zurückgekehrten Jahwe, dem Gott Israels, einen Tempel bauten,
And the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity were building the temple to Jehovah the God of Israel;
2 da traten sie herzu zu Serubabel und zu den Familienhäuptern und sprachen zu ihnen: Wir wollen mit euch bauen, denn gleich euch suchen wir euren Gott und ihm opfern wir seit den Tagen Assarhaddons, des Königs von Assyrien, der uns hierher gebracht hat.
and they came to Zerubbabel and to the chief fathers, and said to them, We would build with you; for we seek your God, as ye; and we have sacrificed to him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assyria, who brought us up hither.
3 Serubabel aber und Jesua und die übrigen israelitischen Familienhäupter sprachen zu ihnen: Wir haben nichts mit euch zu schaffen, daß wir mit euch zusammen unserem Gott einen Tempel bauen sollten, sondern wir für uns wollen Jahwe, dem Gott Israels, bauen, wie uns der König Cyrus, der König von Persien, befohlen hat.
But Zerubbabel and Jeshua and the rest of the chief fathers of Israel said to them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build a house to our God, but we alone will build to Jehovah the God of Israel, as king Cyrus, the king of Persia, has commanded us.
4 Da brachten es die Bewohner des Landes dahin, daß die Bewohner Judas die Hände sinken ließen, und schreckten sie vom Bauen ab
And the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building;
5 und dingten Sachwalter gegen sie, um ihre Absicht zu vereiteln, so lange als Cyrus, der König von Persien, lebte, und bis zur Regierung des Darius, des Königs von Persien.
and they hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
6 Und während der Regierung des Ahasveros, im Anfange seiner Regierung, schrieben Bislam, Mithredath, Tabeel und seine übrigen Genossen eine Anklageschrift gegen die Bewohner von Juda und Jerusalem.
And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
7 Unter der Regierung Arthahsasthas aber schrieben Rehum, der Befehlshaber, und Simsai, der Schreiber, einen Brief gegen die Bewohner von Jerusalem an Arthahsastha, den König von Persien, folgenden Inhalts.
And in the days of Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions, wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in Aramaic, and interpreted in Aramaic.
8 Der Brief war persisich geschrieben und ins Aramäische übersetzt.
Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king after this sort:
9 “Rehum, der Befehlshaber, und Simsai, der Schreiber, und ihre übrigen Genossen, die Dinäer, Apharsathechäer, Tarpeläer, Apharsäer, Arkeväer, Babylonier, Susanchäer, Dehäer, Elamiter
Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions, the Dinaites, and the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites, the Dehaites, the Elamites,
10 und die übrigen Völker, die der große und erlauchte Asnappar aus ihrer Heimat weggeführt und in der Stadt Samarien und in den übrigen Gebieten jenseits des Euphratstroms angesiedelt hat, und so weiter.
and the rest of the peoples whom the great and noble Osnappar brought over and settled in the cities of Samaria, and the rest [of the country] on this side the river, and so forth.
11 Dies ist der Inhalt des Briefs, den sie an den König Arthahsastha sandten: Deine Knechte, die Männer im Gebiete jenseits des Stroms, und so weiter.
This is the copy of the letter that they sent to him: To Artaxerxes the king: Thy servants the men on this side the river, and so forth.
12 Kund sei dem Könige, daß die Juden, die von dir heraufgezogen sind, zu uns, nach Jerusalem, gelangt sind. Sie sind im Begriff, die aufrührerische und böse Stadt wieder aufzubauen und die Mauern zu vollenden, und die Fundamente graben sie bereits aus.
Be it known to the king that the Jews who came up from thee unto us have come to Jerusalem; they are building the rebellious and the bad city, and they complete the walls and join up the foundations.
13 So sei nun dem Könige kund, daß sie, wenn erst diese Stadt wieder aufgebaut und ihre Mauern vollendet sein werden, keine Steuern, Abgaben und Wegegelder mehr entrichten und so das Einkommen der Könige beeinträchtigen werden.
Be it known therefore unto the king, that, if this city be built and the walls be completed, they will not pay tribute, tax, and toll, and in the end it will bring damage to the kings.
14 Da wir nun aber das Salz des königlichen Palastes essen und deshalb die Schädigung des Königs nicht mit ansehen dürfen, darum senden wir und thun es dem Könige kund,
Now, since we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not right for us to see the king's injury, therefore have we sent and informed the king;
15 damit man nachforsche im Buche der Denkwürdigkeiten aus der Zeit deiner Ahnen; so wirst du im Buche der Denkwürdigkeiten finden und erfahren, daß diese Stadt eine aufrührerische und Königen wie Provinzen schädliche Stadt ist, und daß man seit uralten Zeiten Aufruhr in ihr angestiftet hat; deshalb ist diese Stadt auch zerstört worden.
that search may be made in the book of the annals of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the annals and know that this city is a rebellious city, which has done damage to kings and provinces, and that they have raised sedition within the same of old time, for which cause this city was destroyed.
16 Wir thun dem Könige kund, daß du, wenn diese Stadt wieder aufgebaut und ihre Mauern vollendet werden, eben deshalb an dem Gebiete jenseits des Stroms keinen Anteil mehr haben wirst.”
We inform the king that if this city be built and its walls be completed, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.
17 Folgenden Erlaß sandte der König an Rehum, den Befehlshaber, und Simsai, den Schreiber, und ihre übrigen Genossen, die in Samarien und dem übrigen Gebiete jenseits des Stromes wohnten: “Heil! und so weiter.
The king sent an answer to Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and the other places beyond the river: Peace, and so forth.
18 Der Brief, den ihr an uns gesandt habt, ist mir deutlich vorgelesen worden.
The letter that ye sent to us has been read before me distinctly.
19 Und nachdem ich Befehl erteilt, hat man nachgeforscht und gefunden, daß sich diese Stadt seit uralten Zeiten gegen die Könige aufgelehnt hat, und daß Aufruhr und Empörung in ihr angestiftet ward.
And I gave orders, and search has been made, and it has been found that this city of old time has made insurrection against the kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been raised therein.
20 Und mächtige Könige haben über Jerusalem geherrscht und ihre Macht über das ganze Gebiet jenseits des Stroms ausgedehnt, indem ihnen Steuer, Abgabe und Wegegeld entrichtet wurde.
And there have been mighty kings over Jerusalem, who have ruled over all beyond the river; and tribute, tax, and toll were paid to them.
21 So erteilt nun Befehl, daß diese Männer ihre Arbeit einstellen, damit diese Stadt nicht aufgebaut werde, bis von mir Befehl erteilt werden wird.
Now give order to make these men to cease, and that this city be not built, until the order shall be given from me;
22 Und seid auf eurer Hut, daß ihr euch hierbei keine Versäumnis zu Schulden kommen laßt, damit nicht großer Schaden daraus erwachse zum Nachteil der Könige!”
and take heed that ye fail not to do this: why should harm grow to the damage of the kings?
23 Sobald nun der Inhalt des Briefs des Königs Arthahsastha Rehum und Simsai, dem Schreiber, und ihren Genossen vorgelesen worden war, zogen sie in Eile nach Jerusalem zu den Juden und nötigten sie unter Anwendung von Gewalt zur Einstellung der Arbeit.
As soon as the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews, and made them cease by force and power.
24 Damals wurde die Arbeit am Tempel Gottes zu Jerusalem eingestellt und blieb eingestellt bis zum zweiten Jahre der Regierung des Darius, des Königs von Persien.
Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem; and it ceased until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
