Prediger 7
1 Besser ein guter Name, als gutes Salböl, und besser der Tag des Todes als der Tag der Geburt.
A good name is better than fine perfume; and the day of death better than the day of one’s birth.
2 Besser in ein Trauerhaus gehen als in ein Trinkhaus gehen; denn jenes ist das Ende aller Menschen, und der Lebende nimmt es zu Herzen.
It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting; for that is the end of all men, and the living should take this to heart.
3 Besser Gram als Lachen, denn bei traurigem Angesicht ist's dem Herzen wohl.
Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the face the heart is made good.
4 Das Herz der Weisen ist im Trauerhause, aber das Herz der Thoren im Hause der Freude.
The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
5 Besser das Schelten eines Weisen zu hören, als daß einer den Gesang der Thoren hört.
It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise than for a man to hear the song of fools.
6 Denn wie das Knistern der Dornen unter dem Topfe, so ist das Lachen des Thoren: auch das ist eitel.
For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool. This also is vanity.
7 Die Erpressung macht den Weisen thöricht, und Bestechung verdirbt das Herz.
Surely extortion makes the wise man foolish; and a bribe destroys the understanding.
8 Besser der Ausgang einer Sache als ihr Anfang; besser ein langmütiger als ein hochmütiger.
Better is the end of a thing than its beginning. The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
9 Übereile dich nicht in deinem Geist, ärgerlich zu werden, denn Ärger ruht im Busen der Thoren.
Don’t be hasty in your spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools.
10 Sage nicht: Wie kommt's, daß die früheren Tage besser waren, als die jetzigen? Denn nicht aus Weisheit fragst du darnach.
Don’t say, “Why were the former days better than these?” For you do not ask wisely about this.
11 Weisheit ist so gut wie Erbbesitz, und ein Vorteil für die, welche die Sonne sehen.
Wisdom is as good as an inheritance. Yes, it is more excellent for those who see the sun.
12 Denn Schatten gewährt die Weisheit, Schatten das Geld, aber der Vorzug der Erkenntnis ist: die Weisheit erhält dem, der sie besitzt, das Leben.
For wisdom is a defense, even as money is a defense; but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.
13 Siehe an das Werk Gottes; denn wer kann gerade machen, was er gekrümmt hat?
Consider the work of God, for who can make that straight which he has made crooked?
14 Am guten Tage sei guter Dinge und am bösen bedenke: auch diesen hat Gott gemacht ganz so wie jenen, damit der Mensch nachher nichts weiter zu erfahren bekomme.
In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider; yes, God has made the one side by side with the other, to the end that man should not find out anything after him.
15 Alles habe ich gesehen in meinen eitlen Lebenstagen: Manch ein Gerechter geht in seiner Gerechtigkeit zu Grunde, und mancher Gottlose lebt lange in seiner Bosheit.
All this I have seen in my days of vanity: there is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who lives long in his evildoing.
16 Sei nicht allzu gerecht und erzeige dich nicht übermäßig weise: warum willst du dich zu Grunde richten?
Don’t be overly righteous, neither make yourself overly wise. Why should you destroy yourself?
17 Frevle nicht zu sehr und sei kein Thor; warum willst du sterben, ehe es Zeit für dich ist?
Don’t be too wicked, neither be foolish. Why should you die before your time?
18 Es ist gut, daß du an diesem festhaltest und auch von jenem deine Hand nicht lässest, denn wer Gott fürchtet, entgeht dem allen.
It is good that you should take hold of this. Yes, also don’t withdraw your hand from that; for he who fears God will come out of them all.
19 Die Weisheit gewährt dem Weisen mehr Stärke als zehn Gewaltige, die in der Stadt sind.
Wisdom is a strength to the wise man more than ten rulers who are in a city.
20 Denn es giebt keinen gerechten Menschen auf Erden, der Gutes thäte und nicht sündigte.
Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and doesn’t sin.
21 Gieb auch nicht acht auf all' das Gerede, das man redet, damit du nicht deinen Knecht dir fluchen hörest.
Also don’t take heed to all words that are spoken, lest you hear your servant curse you;
22 Denn du bist dir vieler Fälle bewußt, wo auch du anderen geflucht hast.
for often your own heart knows that you yourself have likewise cursed others.
23 Alles dies habe ich versucht mit Weisheit; ich dachte: ich will weise werden, aber sie blieb fern von mir.
All this I have proved in wisdom. I said, “I will be wise;” but it was far from me.
24 Fern ist, was da ist, und tief, ja tief: wer kann's ergründen?
That which is, is far off and exceedingly deep. Who can find it out?
25 Ich wandte mich, und mein Sinn war darauf gerichtet, zu erkennen und zu erforschen und Weisheit und kluge Berechnung zu suchen und zu erkennen, daß Frevel Thorheit und Narrheit Tollheit ist.
I turned around, and my heart sought to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know that wickedness is stupidity, and that foolishness is madness.
26 Und bitterer als den Tod erfand ich das Weib; denn sie gleicht einem Netz, und ihr Herz einem Fanggarn, ihre Hände Fesseln. Wer Gott gefällt, entrinnt ihr, aber der Sünder wird durch sie gefangen.
I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and traps, whose hands are chains. Whoever pleases God shall escape from her; but the sinner will be ensnared by her.
27 Siehe, das habe ich gefunden, spricht der Prediger, eins zum andern fügend, um ein Ergebnis zu finden.
“Behold, I have found this,” says the Preacher, “to one another, to find an explanation
28 Was ich fortwährend suchte, aber nicht fand, ist dies: Einen Mann unter tausend habe ich gefunden, aber ein Weib unter allen diesen habe ich nicht gefunden.
which my soul still seeks, but I have not found. I have found one man among a thousand, but I have not found a woman among all those.
29 Nur dies, siehe, habe ich gefunden, daß Gott den Menschen gerade geschaffen hat, sie aber suchen viele Künste.
Behold, I have only found this: that God made mankind upright; but they search for many inventions.”
