5 Mose 1

1 Dies sind die Worte, welche Mose jenseits des Jordan in der Wüste, in der Steppe, gegenüber von Suph, zwischen Paran, Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth und Disahab zu dem ganzen Israel geredet hat.

These are the words which Moses spoke unto all Israel on this side of the Jordan, in the wilderness, in the plain opposite Suph, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Chazeroth, and Di-zahab.

2 Elf Tagereisen beträgt die Entfernung auf dem Wege nach dem Gebirge Seir vom Horeb bis Kades-Barnea.

It is a journey of eleven days from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadesh-barnea'.

3 Im vierzigsten Jahre, am ersten Tage des elften Monats verkündigte Mose den Israeliten alles, was ihm Jahwe für sie anbefohlen hatte,

And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spoke unto the children of Israel, according to all that the Lord had commanded him concerning them;

4 nachdem er den Amoriterkönig Sihon, der in Hesbon, und Og, den König von Basan, der in Astaroth wohnte, bei Edrei besiegt hatte.

After he had smitten Sichon the king of the Emorites, who dwelt in Cheshbon, and 'Og the king of Bashan, who dwelt at 'Ashtaroth in Edre'i.

5 Jenseits des Jordan im Lande Moab unternahm es Mose, in folgender Unterweisung das Gesetz zu erläutern, indem er sprach:

On this side of the Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to explain this law, saying,

6 Jahwe, unser Gott, hat am Horeb folgendermaßen zu uns geredet: Ihr habt nun lange genug an diesem Berge verweilt.

The Lord our God spoke unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have tarried long enough at this mount;

7 Brecht auf und zieht geradewegs nach dem Gebirge der Amoriter und zu allen ihren Nachbarn, die in der Steppe, auf dem Gebirge, in der Niederung, im Südland und an der Meeresküste wohnen, in das Land der Kanaaniter und zum Libanon bis zu dem großen Strome, dem Euphratstrom.

Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mountain of the Emorites, and unto all its neighboring places, in the plain, in the mountain, and in the lowlands, and in the southern country, and by the coast of the sea, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto the Lebanon, up to the great river, the river Euphrates.

8 Das Land ist euch hiermit von mir übergeben. Zieht hinein und nehmt das Land in Besitz, von dem Jahwe euren Vätern Abraham, Isaak und Jakob geschworen hat, daß er es ihnen und nachmals ihren Nachkommen verleihen wolle.

Behold, I have given up the land before you: go in and take possession of the land which the Lord hath sworn unto your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give it unto them and to their seed after them.

9 Zu eben jener Zeit sagte ich zu euch: Es fällt mir zu schwer, allein für euch Sorge zu tragen.

And I said unto you at that time, as followeth, I am not able alone to bear you:

10 Jahwe, euer Gott, hat euch so zahlreich gemacht, daß ihr schon jetzt den Sternen des Himmels an Menge gleichkommt.

The Lord your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.

11 Möge Jahwe, der Gott eurer Väter, eurer Zahl noch tausendmal soviel hinzufügen und euch segnen, wie er euch verheißen hat!

May the Lord the God of your fathers make you a thousand times as many more as ye are; and bless you, as he hath spoken unto you.

12 Aber wie soll ich ganz allein eure Last, eure Bürde und eure Streitigkeiten tragen?

How can I by myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife!

13 Bringt mir Stamm für Stamm weise, verständige und angesehene Männer her, daß ich sie zu euren Vorgesetzten mache!

Furnish for yourselves wise and understanding men, and those known among your tribes, and I will place them as chiefs over you.

14 Da antwortetet ihr mir und spracht: Das ist gut, was du da angekündigt hast!

And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good to do.

15 Da wählte ich unter euch weise und angesehene Männer aus und machte sie zu euren Vorgesetzten als Oberste über tausend, als Oberste über hundert, als Oberste über fünfzig, als Oberste über zehn und als Amtleute in euren Stämmen.

And I took the chiefs of your tribes, wise and known men, and I set them as heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and as officers for your tribes.

16 Und ich gab zu derselben Zeit euren Richtern folgende Anweisung: Verhört eure Volksgenossen und fällt gerechte Urteile, sei es daß jemand mit einem seiner Volksgenossen oder mit einem Fremdling einen Streit hat!

And I commanded your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously, between a man and his brother, and between his stranger.

17 Seid unparteiisch im Gericht; hört den Geringsten an, wie den Größten! Scheuet euch vor niemand; denn das Gericht ist Gottes. Aber die Streitfälle, die euch zu schwer sind, laßt an mich gelangen, damit ich Verhör darüber anstelle.

Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; the small as well as the great shall ye hear; ye shall not be afraid of any man; for the judgment belongeth to God: and the cause that is too hard for you shall ye bring unto me, and I will hear it.

18 So gab ich euch damals Anweisung in betreff alles dessen, was ihr thun solltet.

And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do.

19 Sodann brachen wir vom Horeb auf und durchzogen dem Befehle Jahwes, unseres Gottes, gemäß auf dem Wege nach dem Amoritergebirge jene ganze große und furchtbare Steppe, die ihr gesehen habt. Und als wir nach Kades-Barnea gelangt waren,

And we departed from Horeb, and we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye have seen, by the way of the mountain of the Emorites, as the Lord our God had commanded us; and we came as far as Kadesh-barnea'.

20 da sprach ich zu euch: Ihr seid nun beim Amoritergebirge angelangt, das uns Jahwe unser Gott, verleihen will.

And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Emorites, which the Lord our God doth give unto us.

21 Du siehst, das Land ist dir jetzt von Jahwe, deinem Gott, übergeben; ziehe hin, es in Besitz zu nehmen, wie dir Jahwe, der Gott deiner Väter, geboten hat. Sei ohne Furcht und unverzagt!

Behold, the Lord thy God hath given up the land before thee: go up and take possession of it, as the Lord the God of thy fathers hath spoken unto thee; do not fear, and be not discouraged.

22 Da tratet ihr alle zu mir heran und spracht: Laßt uns Männer voraussenden, daß sie uns das Land erforschen und uns Bescheid zurückbringen über den Weg, auf dem wir hinaufziehen sollen, und über die Städte, zu denen wir gelangen werden!

And ye all came near unto me and said, Let us send out men before us, that they may search out for us the land, and bring us word again concerning the way by which we must go up, and the cities to which we shall come.

23 Da mir der Vorschlag gut schien, nahm ich aus euch zwölf Männer, einen von jedem Stamme.

And the thing was pleasing in my eyes; and I took of you twelve men, one man for every tribe:

24 Die zogen geradewegs ins Gebirge hinauf, gelangten bis zum Thale Eskol und kundschafteten das Land aus.

And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and spied it out.

25 Auch nahmen sie etliche von den Früchten des Landes mit sich und brachten sie zu uns herab. Und sie gaben uns Bescheid und sprachen: Das Land ist schön, das uns Jahwe, unser Gott, verleihen will.

And they took in their hand some of the fruit of the land, and brought it down unto us; and they brought us word again, and said, The land which the Lord our God doth give us is good.

26 Aber ihr wolltet nicht hinaufziehen und widersetztet euch dem Befehle Jahwes, eures Gottes.

But you would not go up, and ye rebelled against the order of the Lord your God;

27 Ihr murrtet in euren Zelten und spracht: Aus Haß gegen uns hat uns Jahwe aus Ägypten weggeführt, um uns den Amoritern auszuliefern, damit sie uns vertilgen.

And ye murmured in your tents, and said, On account of the hatred of the Lord toward us, hath he brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Emorites, to destroy us.

28 Wohin ziehen wir denn sonst? Unsere eigenen Volksgenossen haben uns allen Mut genommen, indem sie sprachen: Leute sind es, die größer und von höherem Wuchse sind als wir, Städte, die groß und himmelhoch befestigt sind, und sogar Enakiter haben wir dort gesehen!

Whither shall we go up? our brethren have made faint our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fortified up to heaven; and moreover the sons of the 'Anakim have we seen there.

29 Da sprach ich zu euch: Entsetzt euch nicht und fürchtet euch nicht vor ihnen!

And I said unto you, Have no dread, nor be ye afraid of them.

30 Jahwe, euer Gott, der euch voranzieht, wird selbst für euch streiten, ganz so, wie er euch in Ägypten sichtbar beigestanden hat,

The Lord your God who goeth before you, he it is who will fight for you; all just as he did for you in Egypt before your eyes;

31 und in der Steppe, die du gesehen hast, wo dich Jahwe, dein Gott, getragen hat, wie einer sein Kind trägt, auf dem ganzen Wege, den ihr zurückgelegt habt, bis zu eurer Ankunft an diesem Orte.

And in the wilderness which thou hast seen, where the Lord thy God bore thee, as a man doth bear his son, on all the way that ye have gone, until ye came unto this place.

32 Aber trotz alledem hattet ihr kein Vertrauen zu Jahwe, eurem Gotte,

Yet in this thing do ye not believe in the Lord your God,

33 der euch auf dem Wege voranzog, um euch einen Lagerplatz auszusuchen: des Nachts im Feuer, damit ihr sehen könntet auf dem Wege, den ihr ziehen mußtet, und tagsüber in der Wolke.

Who goeth before you on the way to seek out for you a place for your encamping, in fire by night, to cause you to see on the way in which ye are to go, and in a cloud by day.

34 Als Jahwe eure Reden hörte, wurde er zornig und that den Schwur:

And the Lord heard the voice of your words; and he was wroth, and swore, saying,

35 Nicht ein einziger von diesen Männern, von diesem bösen Geschlechte, soll das schöne Land sehen, das ich ihren Vätern zugeschworen habe.

Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I have sworn to give unto your fathers;

36 Nur Kaleb, der Sohn Jephunnes, soll es zu sehen bekommen, und ihm und seinen Kindern will ich das Land geben, das er betreten hat, weil er Jahwe vollen Gehorsam bewiesen hat.

Save Caleb the son of Yephunneh, he shall see it, and to him will I give the land upon which he hath trodden, and to his children; because he hath wholly followed the Lord.

37 Auch auf mich zürnte Jahwe um euretwillen, so daß er sprach: Auch du sollst nicht dorthin gelangen.

also with me was the Lord angry for your sakes, saying, also thou shalt not go in thither.

38 Josua, der Sohn Nuns, der dein ständiger Diener ist, er soll hinein gelangen; ihm sprich Mut ein, denn er wird es unter die Israeliten verteilen.

Joshua the son of Nun, who standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: him encourage; for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.

39 Eure Kleinen aber, von denen ihr sagtet: Sie werden eine Beute der Feinde werden! und eure Söhne, die heute noch nicht zwischen gut und böse zu unterscheiden wissen, sie werden hinein gelangen, ihnen werde ich es geben, und sie sollen es in Besitz nehmen.

And your little ones, of whom ye said, They will become a prey, and your children who know not this day either good or evil, these shall go in thither; and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.

40 Ihr aber macht kehrt und brecht auf in die Steppe auf dem Wege zum Schilfmeer.

But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.

41 Da antwortetet ihr und spracht zu mir: Wir haben uns gegen Jahwe versündigt; wir wollen nun doch hinaufziehen und kämpfen, ganz wie es uns Jahwe, unser Gott, befohlen hat! Und ihr gürtetet euch insgesamt eure Waffen um und zogt leichtsinnigerweise hinauf ins Gebirge.

And ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against the Lord; we indeed will go up and we will fight, according to all that the Lord our God hath commanded us; and ye girded on every man his weapons of war, and ye insisted to go up into the mountain.

42 Da sprach Jahwe zu mir: Sage ihnen: Zieht nicht hinauf und wagt keine Schlacht, denn ich bin nicht unter euch; sonst werdet ihr von euren Feinden eine Niederlage erleiden!

And the Lord said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, and do not fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.

43 Ich redete euch zu, aber ihr hörtet nicht, sondern widerspenstig gegen den ausdrücklichen Befehl Jahwes zogt ihr vermessenen Sinnes hinauf ins Gebirge.

And I spoke unto you; but ye would not hear; and ye rebelled against the order of the Lord, and you were presumptuous, and went up into the mountain.

44 Da rückten die Amoriter, die auf jenem Gebirge wohnten, aus, euch entgegen, verfolgten euch so hartnäckig wie Bienen und versprengten euch in Seir bis Horma.

And the Emorites, who dwelt in that mountain: came out against you, and they pursued you, as the bees do, and they overthrew you in Seir, as far as Chormah.

45 Zurückgekehrt jammertet ihr vor Jahwe; aber Jahwe achtete nicht auf euer Wehklagen und hörte nicht auf euch.

And ye returned and wept before the Lord; but the Lord hearkened not to your voice, nor gave ear unto you.

46 Ihr mußtet in Kades die lange Zeit, die ihr dort wart, verweilen.

And ye tarried in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye tarried there.
