1 Ein Mann aber in Cäsarea, mit Namen Cornelius, Hauptmann bei der sogenannten italischen Cohorte,
Now there was a certain man in Caesarea, Cornelius by name, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment,
2 fromm und gottesfürchtig samt seinem ganzen Hause, eifrig in Almosen für das Volk und beständig im Gebete zu Gott,
a devout man, and one who feared God with all his house, who gave gifts for the needy generously to the people, and always prayed to God.
3 sah in einem Gesichte deutlich ungefähr um die neunte Tagesstunde einen Engel Gottes bei sich eintreten, der ihn anredete: Cornelius! Er aber blickte ihn an und sprach erschrocken: Was ist, Herr?
At about three in the afternoon, he clearly saw in a vision an angel of God coming to him, and saying to him, "Cornelius."
4 Er sagte aber zu ihm: deine Gebete und deine Almosen sind aufgestiegen zum Gedenken vor Gott.
He, fastening his eyes on him, and being frightened, said, "What is it, Lord?" He said to him, "Your prayers and your gifts to the needy have gone up for a memorial before God.
5 Und nun schicke Männer nach Joppe, und laß einen gewissen Simon, der den Beinamen Petrus führt, holen.
Now send men to Joppa, and bring one Simon who is surnamed Peter.
6 Der ist zu Gast bei einem Gerber Simon, der ein Haus am Meere hat.
He lodges with one Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the seaside."
7 Wie aber der Engel, der mit ihm sprach, fortgegangen war, rief er zwei von seinen Leuten und einen frommen Soldaten von denen, welche bei ihm den Dienst hatten,
When the angel who spoke to him had departed, he called two of his household servants and a devout soldier of those who waited on him continually.
8 und erzählte ihnen alles, und schickte sie nach Joppe.
Having explained everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.
9 Am folgenden Tage aber, da dieselben ihres Wegs dahin zogen und sich der Stadt näherten, stieg Petrus auf das Dach zu beten, um die sechste Stunde.
Now on the next day as they were on their journey, and got close to the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray at about noon.
10 Er wurde aber hungrig und wünschte zu essen. Während man es ihm aber richtete, kam eine Verzückung über ihn,
He became hungry and desired to eat, but while they were preparing, he fell into a trance.
11 und er schaute den Himmel offen, und ein Geräte herunterkommen wie eine große Leinwand, die an den vier Ecken herabgelassen ward auf die Erde.
He saw heaven opened and a certain container descending to him, like a great sheet let down by four corners on the earth,
12 Darin waren alle vierfüßigen und kriechenden Tiere der Erde, und Vögel des Himmels.
in which were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, crawling creatures and birds of the sky.
13 Und eine Stimme drang zu ihm: stehe auf, Petrus, schlachte und iß.
A voice came to him, "Rise, Peter, kill and eat."
14 Petrus aber sprach: nicht doch, Herr, habe ich doch niemals etwas gemeines oder unreines gegessen.
But Peter said, "Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean."
15 Und wiederum zum zweitenmale sprach eine Stimme zu ihm: was Gott gereinigt hat, das heiße du nicht gemein.
A voice came to him again the second time, "What God has cleansed, you must not call unclean."
16 Dies geschah aber dreimal, und alsbald ward das Gerät zum Himmel aufgenommen.
This was done three times, and immediately the vessel was received up into heaven.
17 Wie aber Petrus sich nicht zu erklären wußte, was das Gesicht bedeute, das er gesehen, siehe da hatten die von Cornelius abgeschickten Männer das Haus des Simon erfragt, und standen am Thore,
Now while Peter was very perplexed within himself what the vision which he had seen might mean, look, the men who were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon's house, stood before the gate,
18 und riefen und forschten, ob hier Simon, der den Beinamen Petrus führe, zu Gast sei.
and called and asked whether Simon, who was surnamed Peter, was lodging there.
19 Da aber Petrus über das Gesicht nachdachte, sprach der Geist zu ihm: siehe es sind Männer da, welche dich suchen.
While Peter was pondering the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Look, three men seek you.
20 Stehe du nur auf und gehe hinunter, und ziehe mit ihnen ohne Bedenken, denn ich habe sie gesandt.
But arise, get down, and go with them, doubting nothing; for I have sent them."
21 Da gieng Petrus hinunter und sagte zu den Männern: hier bin ich, den ihr suchet; warum seid ihr da?
And Peter went down to the men, and said, "Look, I am the one whom you seek. Why have you come?"
22 Sie aber sagten: der Hauptmann Cornelius, ein frommer und gottesfürchtiger Mann, wohlbezeugt vom ganzen Stamm der Juden, hat einen Spruch bekommen, von einem heiligen Engel, dich holen zu lassen in sein Haus, um Worte von dir zu hören.
They said, "Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous man and one who fears God, and well spoken of by all the Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to invite you to his house, and to listen to what you say."
23 Da rief er sie herein und bewirtete sie. Tags darauf aber stand er auf und reiste mit ihnen ab, und einige der Brüder aus Joppe begleiteten ihn.
So he called them in and lodged them. On the next day he arose and went out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him.
24 Tags darauf aber langten sie in Cäsarea an; Cornelius aber wartete auf sie, und hatte seine Verwandten und nächsten Freunde zusammengeladen.
On the next day he entered into Caesarea. Cornelius was waiting for them, having called together his relatives and his near friends.
25 Wie es aber geschah, daß Petrus eintrat, gieng ihm Cornelius entgegen, fiel ihm zu Füßen und huldigte ihm.
When it happened that Peter entered, Cornelius met him, fell down at his feet, and worshiped him.
26 Petrus aber richtete ihn auf mit den Worten: stehe auf, ich bin auch ein Mensch.
But Peter raised him up, saying, "Stand up. I myself am also a man."
27 Und im Gespräche mit ihm gieng er hinein, und traf eine zahlreiche Versammlung,
And as he talked with him, he went in and found many gathered together.
28 und sagte zu ihnen: ihr wisset, daß es einem jüdischen Manne nicht erlaubt ist, sich zu einem von anderem Stamme zu halten, oder ihn zu besuchen.
He said to them, "You yourselves know how it is an unlawful thing for a man who is a Jew to join himself or come to one of another nation, but God has shown me that I should not call any man unholy or unclean.
29 Und mich hat Gott gewiesen, keinen Menschen gemein oder unrein zu heißen; darum bin ich der Bestellung auch ohne Widerrede gefolgt. Nun frage ich, zu welchem Zwecke habt ihr mich holen lassen?
Therefore also I came without complaint when I was sent for. I ask therefore, why did you send for me?"
30 Und Cornelius sagte: auf die Stunde vor vier Tagen war ich auch um die neunte Stunde zu Hause im Gebet, und siehe da stand vor mir ein Mann in strahlendem Gewand,
Cornelius said, "Four days ago until this hour, at three in the afternoon, I was praying in my house, and look, a man stood before me in bright clothing,
31 und spricht: Cornelius, dein Gebet ist erhört, und deiner Almosen ward gedacht vor Gott.
and said, 'Cornelius, your prayer is heard, and your gifts to the needy are remembered in the sight of God.
32 So schicke nun nach Joppe und lasse Simon mit dem Beinamen Petrus holen; er ist zu Gast im Hause eines Gerbers Simon am Meer.
Send therefore to Joppa, and summon Simon, who is surnamed Peter. He lodges in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the seaside.'
33 Alsogleich nun schickte ich zu dir, und du hast wohlgethan zu kommen. Nun also sind wir alle vor Gott bereit, zu hören alles, was dir von dem Herrn anbefohlen ist.
Therefore I sent to you at once, and it was good of you to come. Now therefore we are all here present in the sight of God to hear all things that have been commanded you by the Lord."
34 Petrus aber that den Mund auf, und sagte: Ich fasse in Wahrheit, daß Gott nicht auf die Person sieht.
And Peter opened his mouth and said, "Truly I perceive that God does not show favoritism;
35 Sondern wer in irgend einer Nation ihn fürchtet und Gerechtigkeit übt, ist ihm genehm.
but in every nation he who fears him and works righteousness is acceptable to him.
36 Das Wort hat er ausgehen lassen an die Söhne Israels, mit der frohen Botschaft von Frieden durch Jesus Christus. Er ist der Herr über alle.
The word which he sent to the children of Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all—
37 Ihr wisset von der Sache, die ganz Judäa betroffen hat, ausgehend von Galiläa, nach der Taufe, welche Johannes verkündet hat, nämlich:
that spoken word you yourselves know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;
38 Jesus von Nazaret, wie ihn Gott gesalbt hat mit heiligem Geist und Kraft, und er ist umhergezogen, wohlthuend und heilend alle vom Teufel Bewältigten, denn Gott war mit ihm.
even Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
39 Und wir sind Zeugen von allem, was er gethan hat im Lande der Judäer und in Jerusalem, er den sie dann am Holze aufgehängt und getötet haben.
We are witnesses of everything he did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they also killed by hanging on a tree.
40 Diesen hat Gott auferweckt am dritten Tage, und hat ihm verliehen zu erscheinen,
God raised him up the third day, and gave him to be revealed,
41 nicht allem Volke, aber Zeugen, die von Gott zuvor verordnet waren, uns, die wir mit ihm gegessen und getrunken haben nach seiner Auferstehung von den Toten;
not to all the people, but to witnesses who were chosen before by God, to us, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
42 und er hat uns befohlen dem Volke zu verkünden und zu bezeugen, daß er ist der von Gott bestimmte Richter über Lebende und Tote.
He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that this is the one who is appointed by God as the judge of the living and the dead.
43 Für diesen zeugen alle Propheten, daß durch seinen Namen Sündenvergebung empfange jeder, der an ihn glaubt.
All the prophets testify about him, that through his name everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins."
44 Während noch Petrus diese Worte sprach, fiel der heilige Geist auf ale, die das Wort hörten.
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who heard the word.
45 Und die Gläubigen aus der Beschneidung, die mit Petrus gekommen waren, staunten, daß die Gabe des heiligen Geistes auch über die Heiden ausgegossen ward.
They of the circumcision who believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was also poured out on the non-Jewish people.
46 Denn sie hörten sie mit Zungen reden und Gott preisen. Hierauf nahm Petrus das Wort:
For they heard them speaking in other tongues and magnifying God. Then Peter answered,
47 kann jemand das Wasser versagen zur Taufe dieser, die den heiligen Geist empfangen haben, so gut wie wir?
"Can anyone withhold the water, that these who have received the Holy Spirit as well as we should not be baptized?"
48 Er befahl ihnen aber, sich im Namen Jesus Christus taufen zu lassen. Hierauf baten sie ihn einige Tage bei ihnen zu bleiben.
He commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay some days.
