1 Elisa aber sprach: Hört das Wort Jahwes! So spricht Jahwe: Morgen um diese Zeit wird ein Sea Feinmehl im Thore von Samaria einen Sekel gelten und zwei Sea Gerste auch einen Sekel.

Then said Elisha—Hear ye the word of Yahweh, —Thus, saith Yahweh—About this time to-morrow, a measure of fine meal for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria.

2 Da antwortete der Ritter, auf dessen Arm sich der König stützte, dem Manne Gottes also: Und wenn Jahwe Fenster am Himmel anbrächte, wie könnte solches geschehen? Er erwiderte: Du sollst es mit eigenen Augen sehen, aber nichts davon genießen!

Then the officer on whose hand the king leaned responded to the man of God, and said, Even if Yahweh were making windows in the heavens, could this thing, come to pass? And he said—Lo! thou, art about to see it with thine own eyes, but, thereof, shalt thou not eat!

3 Nun waren vier Männer als Aussätzige vor dem Thore; die sprachen zu einander: Wozu sollen wir hier bleiben, bis wir tot sind?

Now there were, four men, lepers, at the entrance of the gate, —and they said one to another—Why are, we, sitting here until we are dead?

4 Wenn wir uns vornehmen wollten, in die Stadt hineinzugehen, trotzdem daß in der Stadt Hungersnot herrscht, so müßten wir dort sterben; bleiben wir aber hier, so müssen wir auch sterben. So laßt uns denn jetzt ins Lager der Aramäer überlaufen. Lassen sie uns am Leben, so bleiben wir leben; töten sie uns aber, nun so sterben wir!

If we say—Let us enter into the city, Then, the famine, is in the city, and we shall die there, and, if we remain here, then shall we die. Now, therefore, let us fall away unto the camp of the Syrians, if they save us alive, we shall live, and, if they put us to death, we shall die.

5 Also machten sie sich in der Abenddämmerung auf, um sich ins Lager der Aramäer zu begeben. Als sie nun an das vordere Ende des aramäischen Lagers kamen, war dort kein Mensch zu erblicken.

So they rose up in the twilight, to enter into the camp of the Syrians, —and, when they entered the outskirts of the camp of the Syrians, lo! there was not there, a man.

6 Denn der Herr hatte gemacht, daß man im Lager der Aramäer den Lärm von Rossen und den Lärm von Wagen, kurz den Lärm einer großen Heeresmacht vernahm, so daß sie untereinander sprachen: Sicherlich hat der König von Israel die Könige der Hethiter und die Könige von Ägypten wider uns gedungen, daß sie uns überfallen sollen!

Now, the Lord, had caused the camp of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots, noise of horses, a noise of a great host, —and they said one to another—Lo! the king of Israel hath hired against us—the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come against us.

7 So brachen sie denn auf und flohen in der Dämmerung; ihre Zelte aber und ihre Rosse und Esel - das Lager, wie es ging und stand, - ließen sie im Stich und flohen, um nur ihr Leben zu retten.

So they arose, and fled in the twilight, and left their tents, and their horses, and their asses, —the camp, just as it was, —and fled for their lives.

8 Als nun jene Aussätzigen an das vordere Ende des Lagers kamen, gingen sie in ein Zelt hinein, aßen und tranken, schafften dann Silber, Gold und Kleider heraus und gingen hin, die Beute zu vergraben. Dann kamen sie wieder, gingen in ein anderes Zelt, schafften Beute heraus und vergruben sie.

When, therefore, these lepers came in as far as the outskirts of the camp, they entered into one tent, and did eat and drink, and carried from thence silver, and gold, and raiment, and went away and hid them, —and came again, and entered into another tent, and carried from thence—and went and hid them.

9 Darauf aber sprachen sie untereinander: Wir thun Unrecht! Dieser Tag ist ein Tag guter Botschaft. Wenn wir aber schweigen und bis zum lichten Morgen warten, so trifft uns Verschuldung. Laßt uns daher jetzt hineingehen und es im Palaste des Königs melden!

Then said they one to another—Not a right thing, are, we, doing. This day, is, a day of good tidings, and, we, are holding our peace, if we tarry until the light of the morning, there will come upon us, some misfortune, —Now, therefore, come and let us go in, and tell the household of the king.

10 Als sie nun hinkamen, riefen sie den Wächtern am Stadtthor und meldeten ihnen: Wir begaben uns ins Lager der Aramäer, aber da war niemand, uns kein Mensch ließ sich hören, sondern wir fanden nur die Rosse und Esel angebunden, und ihre Zelte, wie sie lagen und standen.

So they came in and called unto the gate of the city, and told them, saying, We entered into the camp of the Syrians, and lo! there was not there, a man, nor sound of human being, —only horses tied, and asses tied, and their tents, just as they were!

11 Da riefen die Thorwächter die Befehlshaber über die Stadt, und diese meldeten es drinnen im Palaste des Königs.

And the watchers of the gate called and told it to the household of the king, within.

12 Da erhob sich der König mitten in der Nacht und sprach zu seinen Dienern: Ich will euch sagen, was die Aramäer gegen uns angestiftet haben. Sie wissen, daß wir Hunger leiden, da haben sie denn das Lager verlassen, um sich draußen herum zu verstecken, indem sie denken: Wenn sie aus der Stadt herauskommen, wollen wir sie lebendig greifen und in die Stadt eindringen!

Then arose the king by night, and said unto his servants, Let me tell you, I pray you, what the Syrians have done to us, —they knew that we were, famished, so they have gone forth out of the camp, to hide in the field, saying, When they come forth out of the city, then shall we take them alive, and, into the city, will we enter.

13 Da antwortete einer von seinen Dienern also: So nehme man doch etliche von den noch übrig gebliebenen Rossen, die hier übriggeblieben sind - es wird ihnen ja doch ergehen, wie der ganzen Menge, die schon dahin ist, - und laßt sie uns aussenden und zusehen!

Then responded one of his servants, and said—Let there be taken, I pray thee, five of the horses that remain, which have been left therein, there they are, according to all the multitude of Israel who have been left therein, there they are, according to all the multitude of Israel, who have been consumed, —and let us send and see!

14 Da holten sie zwei Wagen mit Rossen, die sandte der König dem Heere der Aramäer nach mit dem Auftrag: Zieht hin und seht zu!

So they took two chariots and horses, —and the king sent after the host of the Syrians, saying, Go and see!

15 Als sie ihnen nun bis an den Jordan nachzogen, fand sich, daß der ganze Weg voller Kleider und Waffen lag, die die Aramäer auf ihrer hastigen Flucht weggeworfen hatten. Da kehrten die Boten um und meldeten das dem Könige.

And they followed them as far as the Jordan, and lo! all the way, was full of garments, and utensils, which the Syrians had cast away in their fright, —and the messengers returned, and told the king.

16 Nun ging das Volk hinaus und plünderte das Lager der Aramäer, und es galt ein Sea Feinmehl einen Sekel und zwei Sea Gerste auch einen Sekel, wie Jahwe verheißen hatte.

Then went the people forth and spoiled the camp of the Syrians, —and so there came to be—a measure of fine meal for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, according to the word of Yahweh.

17 Der König aber hatte den Ritter, auf dessen Arm er sich damals gestützt hatte, zum Aufseher der Thore bestellt. Aber das Volk zertrat ihn im Thore, so daß er starb, nach dem Worte des Mannes Gottes, das er geredet hatte, als der König zu ihm hinabkam.

Now, the king, had set the officer on whose hand he leaned, in charge over the gate, and the people trode upon him in the gate, that he died, —as spake the man of God, who said it when the messenger came down to him.

18 Als nämlich der Mann Gottes zum König also sprach: Zwei Sea Gerste werden morgen um diese Zeit im Thore von Samaria einen Sekel gelten und ein Sea Feinmehl auch einen Sekel,

Yea it came to pass, as the man of God had spoken unto the messenger, saying, —Two measures of barley for a shekel, and a measure of fine meal for a shekel, shall there be about this time to-morrow, in the gate of Samaria:

19 da gab der Ritter dem Manne Gottes zur Antwort: Und wenn Jahwe Fenster am Himmel anbrächte, wie könnte dergleichen geschehen? Da erwiderte er: Du sollst es mit eigenen Augen sehen, aber nichts davon genießen!

And when the officer responded to the man of God, and said, Lo! then, if Yahweh were making windows in the heavens, could it be according to this word? And he said, —Lo! thou art about to see it with thine own eyes, but, thereof, shalt thou not eat.

20 Und so erging es ihm: denn das Volk zertrat ihn im Thore, so daß er starb.

Yea it fell out to him, thus, —and the people trode upon him in the gate, that he died.
