1 Naeman aber, der Feldhauptmann des Königs von Aram, galt viel bei seinem Herrn und war hoch angesehen, denn durch ihn hatte Jahwe den Aramäern Sieg verliehen; aber der Mann war bei aller Vortrefflichkeit aussätzig.
Now Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Aram, was a great and honorable man in his master's view, because by him Yahweh had given victory to Aram. He was also a strong, courageous man, but he was a leper.
2 Nun hatten einst Aramäer auf einem Streifzug eine junge Dirne aus dem Lande Israel als Gefangene hinweggeführt; die stand im Dienste der Gemahlin Naemans.
The Arameans had gone out raiding in bands and had taken a little girl from the land of Israel. She served Naaman's wife.
3 Da sprach sie zu ihrer Herrin: Ach, daß mein Herr bei dem Propheten zu Samaria wäre! Der würde ihn von seinem Aussatze befreien.
The girl said to her mistress, “I wish that my master were with the prophet who is in Samaria! Then he would heal my master of his leprosy.”
4 Da ging Naeman hinein zu seinem Herrn und teilte ihm mit: So und so hat die Dirne aus dem Land Israel geredet.
So Naaman went in and told the king what the little girl from the land of Israel had said.
5 Darauf sprach der König von Aram: Ziehe nur hin, ich werde dem Könige von Israel einen Brief senden. Also zog er hin und nahm zehn Talente Silber, sechstausend Sekel Gold und zehn vollständige Anzüge mit sich
So the king of Aram said, “Go now, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel.” Naaman left and took with him ten talents of silver, six thousand pieces of gold, and ten changes of clothes.
6 und überbrachte dem Könige von Israel den Brief, in welchem stand: Wenn nun dieser Brief an dich gelangt, so wisse: ich habe meinen Diener Naeman zu dir gesandt, damit du ihn von seinem Aussatze befreiest.
He also took the letter to the king of Israel that said, “Now when this letter is brought to you, you will see that I have sent Naaman my servant to you, so that you may cure him of his leprosy.”
7 Als aber der König von Israel den Brief gelesen hatte, zerriß er seine Kleider und sprach: Bin ich denn ein Gott, der töten und lebendig machen kann, daß dieser mir entbieten läßt, einen Menschen von seinem Aussatze zu befreien? Da seht ihr ja nun deutlich, wie er Händel mit mir sucht!
When the king of Israel had read the letter, he tore his clothes and said, “Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man wants me to cure a man of his leprosy? It seems he is seeking to start an argument with me.”
8 Sobald aber Elisa, der Mann Gottes, vernahm, daß der König von Israel seine Kleider zerrissen habe, sandte er zum König und ließ ihm sagen: Warum hast du deine Kleider zerrissen? Laß ihn nur zu mir kommen, so soll er erfahren, daß es Propheten in Israel giebt!
So when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent word to the king saying, “Why have you torn your clothes? Let him come now to me, and he will know that there is a prophet in Israel.”
9 Also kam Naeman mit seinen Rossen und Wagen und hielt vor der Thüre des Hauses Elisas.
So Naaman came with his horses and with his chariots and stood at the door of Elisha's house.
10 Da sandte Elisa einen Boten zu ihm und ließ ihm sagen: Gehe hin und bade dich siebenmal im Jordan, so wird dein Fleisch wieder hergestellt werden, und du wirst rein sein!
Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, “Go and dip yourself into the Jordan seven times, and your flesh will be restored; you will be clean.”
11 Naeman aber ward unwillig und ging hinweg mit den Worten: Meinte ich doch, er werde zu mir herauskommen und hertreten, den Namen Jahwes, seines Gottes, anrufen, seine Hand über die Stelle schwingen und so den Aussatz beseitigen.
But Naaman was angry and went away and said, “Look, I thought he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of Yahweh his God, and wave his hand over the place and heal my leprosy.
12 Sind nicht Abana und Pharphar, die Flüsse von Damaskus, besser als alle Wasser in Israel? Könnte ich mich nicht in ihnen baden und rein werden? Also wandte er sich und ging voller Zorn hinweg.
Are not Abanah and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Can I not bathe in them and be clean?” So he turned and went away in a rage.
13 Da traten seine Diener heran und redeten ihm zu und sprachen: Wenn dir der Prophet etwas Schweres anbefohlen hätte, würdest du es nicht thun? Wieviel mehr, da er zu dir gesagt hat: Bade dich, so wirst du rein sein!
Then Naaman's servants came near and spoke to him, “My father, if the prophet had commanded you do some difficult thing, would you not have done it? How much rather then, when he says to you to simply, 'Dip yourself and be clean?'”
14 Da zog er hinab und tauchte siebenmal im Jordan unter, wie der Mann Gottes geboten hatte; da ward sein Fleisch wieder hergestellt wie das eines jungen Knaben, und er war rein.
Then he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, obeying the instructions of the man of God. His flesh was restored again like the flesh of a little child, and he was healed.
15 Da kehrte er mit seinem ganzen Gefolge zu dem Manne Gottes zurück, und als er hinkam, trat er vor ihn und sprach: Wisse, ich habe nun erkannt, daß es keinen Gott giebt in allen Landen, außer in Israel; so nimm denn nun ein Abschiedsgeschenk von deinem Knechte!
Naaman returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came and stood before him. He said, “Look, now I know that there is no God in all the earth except in Israel. So therefore, please take a gift from your servant.”
16 Er aber sprach: So wahr Jahwe lebt, in dessen Dienst ich stehe: ich nehme nichts! Und obwohl er in ihn drang, es zu nehmen, weigerte er sich.
But Elisha replied, “As Yahweh lives, before whom I stand, I will receive nothing.” Naaman urged Elisha to take a gift, but he refused.
17 Da sprach Naeman: Wenn denn nicht, so möge wenigstens deinem Knecht eine Last Erde - so viel, als zwei Maultiere tragen können - gegeben werden. Denn dein Knecht will fortan keinen anderen Göttern mehr Brandopfer und Schlachtopfer bringen, sondern nur Jahwe!
So Naaman said, “If not, then I ask you to let there be given to your servant two mule loads of earth, for from now on, your servant will offer neither burnt offering nor sacrifice to any god but Yahweh.
18 Aber in dem Stücke wolle Jahwe deinem Knechte verzeihen: wenn mein Herr in den Tempel Rimmons geht, um daselbst anzubeten, und sich dabei auf meinen Arm stützt, so daß ich mich mit niederwerfe im Tempel Rimmons, wenn er sich dort niederwirft, so wolle doch Jahwe deinem Knecht in diesem Stücke verzeihen!
In this one thing may Yahweh pardon your servant, that is, when my king goes into the house of Rimmon to worship there, and he leans on my hand and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, when I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, may Yahweh pardon your servant in this matter.”
19 Er aber sprach zu ihm: Ziehe hin in Frieden! Als er nun eine Strecke Wegs von ihm fortgezogen war,
Elisha said to him, “Go in peace.” So Naaman left.
20 sprach Gehasi, der Diener Elisas, des Gottesmannes, bei sich selbst: Da hat nun mein Herr diesen Aramäer Naeman geschont und hat von ihm nicht angenommen, was er hergebracht hat. So wahr Jahwe lebt, ich muß ihm nachlaufen und mir etwas von ihm geben lassen!
He had traveled only a short distance, when Gehazi the servant of Elisha the man of God said to himself, “Look, my master has spared this Naaman the Aramean by not receiving from his hands gifts that he brought. As Yahweh lives, I will run after him and receive something from him.”
21 Also rannte Gehasi dem Naeman nach. Als aber Naeman bemerkte, daß ihm einer nachlief, sprang er vom Wagen, ging ihm entgegen und fragte: Steht alles wohl?
So Gehazi followed after Naaman. When Naaman saw someone running after him, he jumped down from his chariot to meet him and said, “Is everything alright?”
22 Er antwortete Ja! Mein Herr sendet mich und läßt dir sagen: Da sind soeben vom Gebirge Ephraim zwei junge Leute, die zu den Prophetenjüngern gehören, zu mir gekommen; gieb mir doch für sie ein Talent Silbers und zwei Anzüge!
Gehazi said, “Everything is alright. My master has sent me, saying, 'See, now there have come to me from the hill country of Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets. Please give them a talent of silver and two changes of clothes.'”
23 Naeman erwiderte: Thue mir den Gefallen und nimm zwei Talente! Und er drang in ihn und band zwei Talente Silbers in zwei Beutel und zwei Anzüge und gab sie seinen beiden Dienern; die trugen sie vor ihm her.
Naaman replied, “I am very happy to give you two talents.” Naaman urged Gehazi and tied two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of clothes, and laid them on two of his servants, who carried the bags of silver before Gehazi.
24 Als er aber an den Hügel gelangt war, nahm er sie ihnen ab, verwahrte sie im Hause und ließ die Männer gehen. Als sie sich entfernt hatten,
When Gehazi came to the hill, he took the bags of silver from their hands and hid them in the house; he sent the men away, and they left.
25 ging er hinein und trat vor seinen Herrn. Elisa aber fragte ihn: Woher, Gehasi? Er antwortete: Dein Knecht war nirgends hingegangen.
When Gehazi went in and stood before his master, Elisha said to him, “Where have you come from, Gehazi?” He answered, “Your servant went nowhere.”
26 Er aber sprach zu ihm: Bin ich nicht im Geiste mit dir gegangen, als ein gewisser Mann sich umdrehte, von seinem Wagen stieg und dir entgegenging? Nun wohl, du hast das Geld bekommen und wirst Kleider, Ölgärten, Weinberge, Schafe, Rinder, Sklaven und Sklavinnen dafür bekommen;
Elisha said to Gehazi, “Was not my spirit with you when the man turned his chariot to meet you? Is this a time to accept money and clothes, olive orchards and vineyards, sheep and oxen, and male servants and female servants?
27 aber der Aussatz Naemans wird dir und deinen Nachkommen immerdar anhangen! Da ging er von ihm hinaus, schneeweiß von Aussatz.
So the leprosy of Naaman will be on you and your descendants forever.” So Gehazi went out from his presence, a leper as white as snow.
