1 Acht Jahre war Josia alt, als er König ward, und einunddreißig Jahre regierte er zu Jerusalem. Seine Mutter aber hieß Jedida, die Tochter Adajas, und stammte aus Bozkath.

Josiah [is] a son of eight years in his reigning, and he has reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem, and the name of his mother [is] Jedidah daughter of Adaiah of Boskath,

2 Und er that, was Jahwe wohlgefiel und wandelte durchaus auf dem Wege seines Ahnherrn David und wich nicht ab, weder zur Rechten noch zur Linken.

and he does that which is right in the eyes of YHWH, and walks in all the way of his father David, and has not turned aside [to] the right or left.

3 Im achtzehnten Jahre des Königs Josia aber, im achten Monate, sandte der König den Staatsschreiber Saphan, den Sohn Azaljas, des Sohnes Mesullams, in den Tempel Jahwes, indem er ihm befahl:

And it comes to pass, in the eighteenth year of King Josiah, the king has sent Shaphan son of Azaliah, son of Meshullam, the scribe, to the house of YHWH, saying,

4 Gehe hinauf zum Hohenpriester Hiskia und versiegle das Geld, das zum Tempel Jahwes gebracht worden ist, das die Schwellenhüter vom Volk eingesammelt haben,

“Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, and he completes the silver that is brought into the house of YHWH, that the keepers of the threshold have gathered from the people,

5 damit man es den Werkmeistern übergebe, die am Tempel Jahwes bestellt sind, damit man es den Arbeitern gebe, die am Tempel Jahwes beschäftigt sind, das, was am Tempel baufällig ist, zu bessern,

and they give it into the hand of those doing the work, the overseers, in the house of YHWH, and they give it to those doing the work, that [are] in the house of YHWH, to strengthen the breach of the house,

6 nämlich den Zimmerleuten und den Bauleuten und Maurern, sowie zum Ankaufe von Bauholz und behauenen Steinen, den Tempel auszubessern;

to craftsmen, and to builders, and [to repairers of] the wall, and to buy wood and hewn stones to strengthen the house;

7 doch soll in betreff des Geldes, das man ihnen übergiebt, nicht mit ihnen abgerechnet werden, sondern auf Treu und Glauben handeln sie.

only, the silver that is given into their hand is not reckoned with them, for they are dealing in faithfulness.”

8 Da sprach der Hohepriester Hilkia zum Staatsschreiber Saphan: Ich habe im Tempel Jahwes das Gesetzbuch gefunden. Und Hilkia übergab Saphan das Buch; der las es.

And Hilkiah the high priest says to Shaphan the scribe, “I have found [the] Scroll of the Law in the house of YHWH”; and Hilkiah gives the scroll to Shaphan, and he reads it.

9 Darauf begab sich Saphan, der Staatsschreiber, zum König und erstattet dem Könige Bericht, indem er sprach: Deine Diener haben das Geld ausgeschüttet, das sich im Tempel vorfand, und haben es den Werkmeistern übergeben, die am Tempel Jahwes bestellt sind.

And Shaphan the scribe comes to the king, and brings the king back word, and says, “Your servants have poured out the silver that has been found in the house, and give it into the hand of those doing the work, the inspectors, in the house of YHWH.”

10 Sodann berichtete Saphan, der Staatsschreiber, dem Könige: Der Priester Hilkia hat mir ein Buch gegeben. Und Saphan las es dem Könige vor.

And Shaphan the scribe declares to the king, saying, “Hilkiah the priest has given a scroll to me”; and Shaphan reads it before the king.

11 Als aber der König die Worte des Gesetzbuchs vernahm, zerriß er seine Kleider.

And it comes to pass, at the king’s hearing the words of the Scroll of the Law, that he tears his garments,

12 Sodann gebot der König dem Priester Hilkia und Ahikam, dem Sohne Saphans, und Achbor, dem Sohne Michajas, und Saphan, dem Staatsschreiber, und Asaja, dem Leibdiener des Königs, Folgendes:

and the king commands Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam son of Shaphan, and Achbor son of Michaiah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asahiah servant of the king, saying,

13 Geht hin und befragt Jahwe für mich und für das Volk und ganz Juda in betreff dieses Buchs, das aufgefunden ward; denn groß ist der Grimm Jahwes, der gegen uns entbrannt ist, weil unsere Väter den Worten dieses Buchs nicht gehorcht haben, daß sie genau dem Folge geleistet hätten, was darin geschrieben steht.

“Go, seek YHWH for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this scroll that is found, for great [is] the fury of YHWH that is kindled against us, because that our fathers have not listened to the words of this scroll, to do according to all that is written for us.”

14 Da begab sich der Priester Hilkia mit Ahikam, Achbor, Saphan und Asaja zur Prophetin Hulda, dem Weibe Sallums, des Kleiderhüters, des Sohnes Thikwas, des Sohnes Harhas'; die wohnte zu Jerusalem im zweiten Bezirk, und sie redeten mit ihr.

And Hilkiah the priest goes, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asahiah, to Huldah the prophetess, wife of Shallum, son of Tikvah, son of Harhas, keeper of the garments, and she is dwelling in Jerusalem in the second [quarter], and they speak to her.

15 Da sprach sie zu ihnen: So spricht Jahwe, der Gott Israels: Sagt dem Manne, der euch zu mir gesandt hat:

And she says to them, “Thus said YHWH, God of Israel: Say to the man who has sent you to me,

16 So spricht Jahwe: Fürwahr, ich will Unglück über diesen Ort und seine Bewohner bringen, alle Drohungen des Buches, das der König von Juda gelesen hat;

Thus said YHWH: Behold, I am bringing in calamity to this place and on its inhabitants, all the words of the scroll that the king of Judah has read,

17 darum, daß sie mich verlassen und anderen Göttern geräuchert haben, auf daß sie mich mit all' dem Machwerk ihrer Hände zum Zorne reizten, und mein Grimm soll entbrennen wider diesen Ort und nicht erlöschen.

because that they have forsaken Me, and make incense to other gods, so as to provoke Me to anger with every work of their hands, and My wrath has been kindled against this place, and it is not quenched.

18 Zu dem Könige von Juda aber, der euch gesandt hat, Jahwe zu befragen, sollt ihr also sprechen: So spricht Jahwe, der Gott Israels.

And to the king of Judah, who is sending you to seek YHWH, thus you say to him, Thus said YHWH, God of Israel: The words that you have heard—

19 Weil dein Herz erweicht ward durch die Worte, die du gehört hast, und du dich vor Jahwe gedemütigt hast, als du hörtest, was ich wider diesen Ort und seine Bewohner geredet habe, daß sie ein Gegenstand des Entsetzens und des Fluchs werden sollen, und hast deine Kleider zerrissen und vor mir geweint, so habe auch ich Gehör geschenkt, ist der Spruch Jahwes.

because your heart [is] tender, and you are humbled because of YHWH, in your hearing that which I have spoken against this place, and against its inhabitants, to be for a desolation, and for a reviling, and you tear your garments and weep before Me—I also have heard—a declaration of YHWH—

20 So will ich dich denn zu deinen Vätern versammeln, daß du unbehelligt in deine Grabstätte eingebracht werdest, und deine Augen nicht ansehen müssen all' das Unglück, das ich über diesen Ort bringen werde! Und sie erstatteten dem Könige Bericht.

therefore, behold, I am gathering you to your fathers, and you have been gathered to your grave in peace, and your eyes do not look on any of the calamity that I am bringing in on this place”; and they bring the king back word.
