1 Im siebenten Jahre Jehus ward Jehoas König und vierzig Jahre regierte er zu Jerusalem; seine Mutter aber hieß Zibja und stammte aus Berseba.

In the seventh year of Jehu, Joash became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem forty years. His mother’s name was Zibiah; she was from Beersheba.

2 Und Jehoas that, was Jahwe wohlgefiel, sein ganzes Leben lang, weil der Priester Jojada ihn unterwiesen hatte.

And Joash did what was right in the eyes of the LORD all the days he was instructed by Jehoiada the priest.

3 Nur wurden die Höhen nicht abgeschafft; das Volk opferte und räucherte noch auf den Höhen.

Nevertheless, the high places were not removed; the people continued sacrificing and burning incense there.

4 Und Jehoas sprach zu den Priestern: Alles Geld, das als Weihgeschenk in den Tempel Jahwes gebracht wird, sowohl das Geld, das einem durch Schätzung auferlegt wird, als auch alles Geld, das irgend jemand aus freien Stücken in den Tempel Jahwes bringt,

Then Joash said to the priests, “Collect all the money brought as sacred gifts into the house of the LORD—the census money, the money from vows, and the money brought voluntarily into the house of the LORD.

5 das sollen die Priester an sich nehmen, ein jeglicher von seinem Bekannten. Und zwar sollen sie davon ausbessern, was am Tempel baufällig ist, alles, woran sich etwas Baufälliges findet.

Let every priest receive it from his constituency, and let it be used to repair any damage found in the temple.”

6 Im dreiundzwanzigsten Jahre des Königs aber hatten die Priester noch immer nicht ausgebessert, was am Tempel baufällig war.

By the twenty-third year of the reign of Joash, however, the priests had not yet repaired the damage to the temple.

7 Da berief der König Jehoas den Priester Jojada und die übrigen Priester und sprach zu ihnen: Warum bessert ihr denn nicht aus, was am Tempel baufällig ist? So sollt ihr auch kein Geld mehr in Empfang nehmen von euren Bekannten, sondern sollt es hergeben für das, was am Tempel baufällig ist.

So King Joash called Jehoiada and the other priests and said, “Why have you not repaired the damage to the temple? Now, therefore, take no more money from your constituency, but hand it over for the repair of the temple.”

8 Und die Priester erklärten sich einverstanden, daß sie kein Geld mehr vom Volk in Empfang nehmen, aber auch nicht ausbessern sollten, was am Tempel baufällig war.

So the priests agreed that they would not receive money from the people and that they would not repair the temple themselves.

9 Darauf nahm der Priester Jojada eine Lade, bohrte ein Loch in ihren Deckel und stellte sie neben den Malstein zur Rechten vom Eingang in den Tempel Jahwes; dahinein thaten die Priester, die die Schwelle hüteten, alles das Geld, das zum Tempel Jahwes gebracht wurde.

Then Jehoiada the priest took a chest, bored a hole in its lid, and set it beside the altar on the right side as one enters the house of the LORD. There the priests who guarded the threshold put all the money brought into the house of the LORD.

10 Sobald sie dann merkten, daß viel Geld in der Lade war, kam der Schreiber des Königs und der Hohepriester herauf, und sie banden das Geld, das sich im Tempel Jahwes vorfand, zusammen und zählten es.

Whenever they saw that there was a large amount of money in the chest, the royal scribe and the high priest would go up, count the money brought into the house of the LORD, and tie it up in bags.

11 Dann übergaben sie das abgewogene Geld den Werkmeistern, die beim Tempel Jahwes die Aufsicht führten; die gaben es aus an die Zimmerleute und die Bauleute, die am Tempel Jahwes arbeiteten,

Then they would put the counted money into the hands of those who supervised the work on the house of the LORD, who in turn would pay those doing the work—the carpenters, builders,

12 und an die Maurer und Steinmetzen, sowie für den Ankauf von Holz und behauenen Steinen, damit das Baufällige am Tempel Jahwes ausgebessert würde, kurz für alles, was die Ausbesserung des Tempels kostete.

masons, and stonecutters. They also purchased timber and dressed stone to repair the damage to the house of the LORD, and they paid the other expenses of the temple repairs.

13 Doch ließ man von dem Gelde, das zum Tempel Jahwes gebracht wurde, keine silbernen Becken, Messer, Sprengschalen, Trompeten, noch irgend ein goldenes oder silbernes Geräte für den Tempel Jahwes anfertigen,

However, the money brought into the house of the LORD was not used for making silver basins, wick trimmers, sprinkling bowls, trumpets, or any articles of gold or silver for the house of the LORD.

14 sondern den Arbeitern gab man es, daß sie davon den Tempel Jahwes ausbesserten.

Instead, it was paid to those doing the work, and with it they repaired the house of the LORD.

15 Mit den Männern aber, denen man das Geld übergab, damit sie es den Arbeitern aushändigten, rechnete man nicht ab, sondern auf Treu und Glauben handelten sie.

No accounting was required from the men who received the money to pay the workmen, because they acted with integrity.

16 Das Geld von Schuldopfern und Sündopfern aber ward nicht zum Tempel Jahwes gebracht; den Priestern gehörte es.

The money from the guilt offerings and sin offerings was not brought into the house of the LORD; it belonged to the priests.

17 Damals zog Hasael, der König von Aram, heran, belagerte die Stadt Gath und eroberte sie. Als nun Hasael Miene machte, Jerusalem anzugreifen,

At that time Hazael king of Aram marched up and fought against Gath and captured it. Then he decided to attack Jerusalem.

18 nahm Jehoas, der König von Juda, alle die Weihegaben, die seine Ahnherren, Josaphat, Jehoram und Ahasjahu, die Könige von Juda, Jahwe geweiht hatten, und seine eigenen Weihegaben, sowie alles Gold, das sich in den Schatzkammern des Tempels Jahwes und des königlichen Palastes vorfand, und sandte es Hasael, dem Könige von Aram. Da stand er von dem Angriff auf Jerusalem ab.

So King Joash of Judah took all the sacred objects dedicated by his fathers—Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah, the kings of Judah—along with his own consecrated items and all the gold found in the treasuries of the house of the LORD and the royal palace, and he sent them to Hazael king of Aram. So Hazael withdrew from Jerusalem.

19 Was aber sonst noch von Jehoas zu sagen ist und alles, was er ausgeführt hat, das ist ja aufgezeichnet im Buche der Geschichte der Könige von Juda.

As for the rest of the acts of Joash, along with all his accomplishments, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?

20 Es erhoben sich aber seine Diener, zettelten eine Verschwörung an und erschlugen Jehoas im Hause Millo, wo es nach Silla hinabgeht.

And the servants of Joash rose up and formed a conspiracy and killed him at Beth-millo, on the road down to Silla.

21 Josachar nämlich, der Sohn Simeaths, und Josabad, der Sohn Somers, seine Diener, schlugen ihn tot; und man begrub ihn bei seinen Vätern in der Stadt Davids. Amazja aber, sein Sohn, ward König an seiner Statt.

His servants Jozabad son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer struck him down, and he died. And they buried him with his fathers in the City of David, and his son Amaziah reigned in his place.
