2 Chronik 32

1 Nach diesen Begebenheiten und diesem treulichen Eifer rückte Sanherib, der König von Assyrien, an. Der rückte in Juda ein, belagerte die festen Städte und gedachte, sie für sich zu erobern.

Now after these things and this true-hearted work, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, came into Judah, and put his army in position before the walled towns of Judah, designing to make his way into them by force.

2 Als nun Hiskia wahrnahm, daß Sanherib anrückte, mit der Absicht, Jerusalem anzugreifen,

And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come for the purpose of fighting against Jerusalem,

3 da wurde er mit seinen obersten Beamten und seinen Helden schlüssig, die Wasser der Quellen, die sich außerhalb der Stadt befanden, zu verstopfen, und sie unterstützten ihn dabei.

He took up with his rulers and men of war the question of stopping up the water-springs outside the town; and they gave him their support.

4 Da versammelten sich eine Menge Leute und verstopften sämtliche Quellen, sowie den Bach, der mitten durchs Land strömte, indem sie sprachen: Warum sollen doch die Könige von Assyrien, wenn sie anrücken, viel Wasser finden?

So they got together a great number of people, and had all the water-springs and the stream flowing through the land stopped up, saying, Why let the kings of Assyria come and have much water?

5 Alsdann ging er mutig ans Werk, stellte die Mauer überall, wo sie Risse hatte, wieder her, bestieg die Türme und die äußere Mauer draußen, befestigte das Millo in der Stadt Davids und ließ eine Menge Wurfgeschosse und Schilde anfertigen.

Then he took heart, building up the wall where it was broken down, and making its towers higher, and building another wall outside; and he made strong the Millo in the town of David, and got together a great store of all sorts of instruments of war.

6 Sodann stellte er Kriegshauptleute an die Spitze des Volks; diese versammelte er zu sich auf den freien Platz am Stadtthor und redete ihnen freundlich zu, indem er sprach:

And he put war chiefs over the people, and sent for them all to come together to him in the wide place at the doorway into the town, and to give them heart he said to them,

7 Seid mutig und stark! Seid getrost und erschreckt nicht vor dem Könige von Assyrien und vor dem ganzen Haufen, den er bei sich hat! Denn mit uns ist ein größerer, als mit ihm:

Be strong and take heart; have no fear, and do not be troubled on account of the king of Assyria and all the great army with him: for there is a greater with us.

8 Mit ihm ist ein fleischerner Arm; mit uns aber ist Jahwe, unser Gott, daß er uns beistehe und unsere Kriege führe!

With him is an arm of flesh; but we have the Lord our God, helping us and fighting for us. And the people put their faith in what Hezekiah, king of Judah, said.

9 Darnach sandte Sanherib, der König von Assyrien, seine Diener nach Jerusalem (er selbst stand mit seiner ganzen Macht vor Lachis) zu Hiskia, dem Könige von Juda, und zu allen Judäern, die sich zu Jerusalem befanden, und ließ ihnen sagen:

After this, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, sent his servants to Jerusalem (at that time he was stationed with all his army in front of Lachish), to say to Hezekiah and all the men of Judah in Jerusalem,

10 So spricht Sanherib, der König von Assyrien: Worauf verlaßt ihr euch, daß ihr in Jerusalem, in der Belagerungsnot, sitzen bleibt?

Sennacherib, king of Assyria, says, In what are you placing your hope, waiting here in the walled town of Jerusalem?

11 Wahrlich, Hiskia verführt euch, um euch vor Hunger und Durst sterben zu lassen, indem er spricht: Jahwe, unser Gott, wird uns aus der Gewalt des Königs von Assyrien erretten!

Is it not Hezekiah who has got you to do it, causing your death from need of food and water, by saying, The Lord our God will give us salvation out of the hands of the king of Assyria?

12 Hat nicht derselbe Hiskia seine Höhen und Altäre abgeschafft, indem er Juda und Jerusalem befahl: Vor einem einzigen Altare sollt ihr anbeten und nur auf ihm dürft ihr räuchern?

Has not this same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, Give worship before one altar only, burning offerings on it?

13 Wißt ihr nicht, was ich und meine Väter allen Völkern der verschiedenen Länder angethan haben? Haben etwa die Götter der Völker in den verschiedenen Ländern ihr Land aus meiner Gewalt zu erretten vermocht?

Have you no knowledge of what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of every land? were the gods of the nations of those lands able to keep their land from falling into my hands?

14 Wer von allen den Göttern dieser Völker, an denen meine Väter den Bann vollstreckt haben, hätte sein Volk aus meiner Gewalt zu erretten vermocht, daß euch euer Gott aus meiner Gewalt sollte erretten können!

Who was there among all the gods of those nations, which my fathers put to destruction, who was able to keep his people safe from my hands? and is it possible that your God will keep you safe from my hands?

15 So laßt euch nun nicht von Hiskia bethören und auf solche Art verführen! Glaubt ihm nicht! Denn kein Gott von irgend welchem Volk oder Reich vermochte bisher sein Volk aus meiner Gewalt oder aus der Gewalt meiner Väter zu erretten, geschweige daß euch euer Gott aus meiner Gewalt erretten sollte!

So do not be tricked by Hezekiah or let him get you to do this, and do not put any faith in what he says: for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to keep his people safe from my hands, or the hands of my fathers: how much less will your God keep you safe from my hands!

16 Und so redeten seine Diener noch mehr wider Gott, Jahwe, und wider seinen Knecht Hiskia.

And his servants said even more against the Lord God and against his servant Hezekiah.

17 Auch einen Brief schrieb er, um Jahwe, den Gott Israels, zu lästern und wider ihn zu reden, indem er behauptete: Wie die Götter der Völker in den verschiedenen Ländern ihr Volk nicht aus meiner Gewalt errettet haben, ebensowenig wird auch der Gott Hiskias sein Volk aus meiner Gewalt erretten.

And he sent letters, in addition, to put shame on the Lord, the God of Israel, and to say evil against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not been able to keep their people safe from my hands, no more will the God of Hezekiah keep his people safe from my hands.

18 Und sie riefen die Bewohner Jerusalems, die sich auf der Mauer befanden, mit lauter Stimme auf judäisch an, um sie in Furcht und Schrecken zu versetzen, damit sie die Stadt in ihre Gewalt bekämen,

These things they said, crying out with a loud voice in the Jews' language, to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, with the purpose of troubling them and putting fear into them, so that they might take the town;

19 und redeten vom Gotte Jerusalems wie von den Göttern der Heidenvölker, die nur ein Werk von Menschenhänden sind.

Talking of the God of Jerusalem as if he was like the gods of the peoples of the earth, the work of men's hands.

20 Als nun der König Hiskia und der Prophet Jesaja, der Sohn des Amoz, um dieser Sache willen beteten und zum Himmel schrieen,

And Hezekiah the king, and Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, made prayer because of this, crying out to heaven.

21 da sandte Jahwe einen Engel; der vertilgte sämtliche Krieger, Heerführer und Oberste im Lager des Königs von Assyrien, so daß er mit Schmach bedeckt in sein Land zurückkehrte. Als er sich nun in den Tempel seines Gottes begab, fällten ihn dort welche, die von seinem eigenen Leibe gekommen waren, durchs Schwert.

And the Lord sent an angel who put to death all the men of war and the chiefs and the captains in the army of the king of Assyria. So he went back to his country in shame. And when he came into the house of his god, his sons, the offspring of his body, put him to death there with the sword.

22 So rettete Jahwe Hiskia und die Bewohner Jerusalems aus der Gewalt Sanheribs, des Königs von Assyrien, und aus der Gewalt aller und verschaffte ihnen ringsum Ruhe.

So the Lord gave Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem salvation from the power of Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, and from all others, giving them rest on every side.

23 Und viele brachten Jahwe Gaben und Jerusalem und Hiskia, dem Könige von Jerusalem, Kleinodien, und er stand darnach in den Augen aller Völker hoch da.

And great numbers came to Jerusalem with offerings for the Lord, and things of great price for Hezekiah, king of Judah: so that he was honoured among all nations from that time.

24 Zu jener Zeit ward Hiskia todkrank. Da betete er zu Jahwe, und dieser redete zu ihm und gab ihm ein Wunderzeichen.

In those days Hezekiah was ill and near death; and he made prayer to the Lord, and the Lord in answer gave him a sign.

25 Aber Hiskia vergalt nicht die Wohlthat, die ihm widerfahren war, sondern ward hochmütig; darum kam grimmiger Zorn über ihn und über Juda und Jerusalem.

But Hezekiah did not do as had been done to him; for his heart was lifted up in pride; and so wrath came on him and on Judah and Jerusalem.

26 Da demütigte sich Hiskia in seinem Hochmut, er und die Bewohner Jerusalems; daher kam der grimmige Zorn Jahwes nicht schon bei den Lebzeiten Hiskias über sie.

But then, Hezekiah, in sorrow for what he had done, put away his pride; and he and all Jerusalem made themselves low, so that the wrath of the Lord did not come on them in Hezekiah's life-time.

27 Es besaß aber Hiskia sehr großen Reichtum und Macht. Er hatte sich Schatzkammern angelegt für Silber, Gold und Edelsteine, sowie für Spezereien, Schilde und allerlei kostbare Geräte,

And Hezekiah had very great wealth and honour; and he made himself store-houses for his gold and silver and jewels and spices, and for body-covers and all sorts of beautiful vessels.

28 dazu Vorratshäuser für den Ertrag an Getreide, Most und Öl, und Ställe für allerlei Arten von Vieh und Hürden für die Herden.

And store-houses for the produce of grain and wine and oil; and buildings for all sorts of beasts and flocks.

29 Auch legte er sich Städte an und große Herden von Schafen und Rindern; denn Gott hatte ihm überaus viel Habe geschenkt.

And he made towns for himself, and got together much property in flocks and herds: for God had given him great wealth.

30 Derselbe Hiskia verstopfte den oberen Ausfluß der Quelle Gihon und leitete sie hinunter nach der Westseite der Stadt Davids; und bei allem, was er unternahm, hatte Hiskia Gelingen.

It was Hezekiah who had the higher spring of the water of Gihon stopped, and the water taken down on the west side of the town of David. In everything he undertook, Hezekiah did well.

31 Demgemäß gab ihn Gott auch den Gesandten der Fürsten von Babel, die zu ihm geschickt waren, um sich nach dem Wunderzeichen zu erkundigen, das im Lande geschehen war, nur so weit preis, um ihn auf die Probe zu stellen, damit er seine Gesinnung vollständig erfahre.

However, in the business of the representatives sent by the rulers of Babylon to get news of the wonder which had taken place in the land, God gave up guiding him, testing him to see what was in his heart.

32 Die übrige Geschichte Hiskias aber und seine frommen Thaten finden sich aufgezeichnet in den Offenbarungen des Propheten Jesaja, des Sohnes des Amoz, und im Buche der Könige von Juda und Israel.

Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and the good he did, are recorded in the vision of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, and in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.

33 Und Hiskia legte sich zu seinen Vätern, und man begrub ihn am Aufstieg zu den Gräbern der Nachkommen Davids, und ganz Juda und die Bewohner Jerusalems erwiesen ihm Ehre bei seinem Tode. Und sein Sohn Manasse ward König an seiner Statt.

So Hezekiah went to rest with his fathers, and they put his body into the higher part of the resting-places of the sons of David: and all Judah and the people of Jerusalem gave him honour at his death. And Manasseh his son became king in his place.
