Titus 1
1 Paulus, Knecht Gottes, Apostel Jesu Christi, bestimmt, den Auserwählten Gottes Glauben zu vermitteln und die Erkenntnis solcher Wahrheit, die Frömmigkeit erzeugt.
Paul, bondman of God, and apostle of Jesus Christ according to [the] faith of God's elect, and knowledge of [the] truth which [is] according to piety;
2 Beide ruhen auf der Hoffnung auf das ewige Leben, das Gott, der niemals lügt, vor ewigen Zeiten verheißen hat. (aiōnios g166)
in [the] hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before the ages of time, (aiōnios g166)
3 Er offenbarte zu bestimmten Zeiten sein Wort durch die Predigt, mit der ich betraut bin im Auftrage Gottes, unseres Heilands.
but has manifested in its own due season his word, in [the] proclamation with which I have been entrusted, according to [the] commandment of our Saviour God;
4 An Titus, an sein echtes Kind im selben Glauben. Gnade und Friede von Gott, dem Vater, und von Christus Jesus, unserem Heiland.
to Titus, my own child according to [the] faith common [to us]: Grace and peace from God [the] Father, and Christ Jesus our Saviour.
5 Ich habe dich auf Kreta zurückgelassen, damit du, was noch fehlt, vollends ordnest und Presbyter in jeder Stadt einsetzest, wie ich es dir aufgetragen habe.
For this cause I left thee in Crete, that thou mightest go on to set right what remained [unordered], and establish elders in each city, as I had ordered thee:
6 Ein solcher muß unbescholten sein und einmal nur verheiratet, muß gläubige Kinder haben, die nicht im Rufe eines liederlichen Lebens stehen und die nicht unbotmäßig sind.
if any one be free from all charge [against him], husband of one wife, having believing children not accused of excess or unruly.
7 Denn unbescholten muß ein Bischof sein als Gottes Haushalter, nicht selbstsüchtig, nicht jähzornig, nicht trunksüchtig, nicht roh und nicht auf schändlichen Gewinn bedacht,
For the overseer must be free from all charge [against him] as God's steward; not headstrong, not passionate, not disorderly through wine, not a striker, not seeking gain by base means;
8 sondern gastfreundlich, dem Guten zugetan, besonnen, gerecht, fromm und enthaltsam.
but hospitable, a lover of goodness, discreet, just, pious, temperate,
9 Er muß am zuverlässigen Wort der Lehre entsprechend festhalten, damit er imstande sei, nach der gesunden Lehre zu ermahnen sowie die Gegner zu widerlegen.
clinging to the faithful word according to the doctrine taught, that he may be able both to encourage with sound teaching and refute gainsayers.
10 Es gibt ja viele unfolgsame Menschen und eitle Schwätzer und Verführer, zumal bei denen aus der Beschneidung.
For there are many and disorderly vain speakers and deceivers of people's minds, specially those of [the] circumcision,
11 Diesen muß man den Mund stopfen; sie bringen ganze Häuser in Verwirrung, indem sie Ungehöriges lehren nur schändlichen Gewinnes wegen.
who must have their mouths stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which ought not [to be taught] for the sake of base gain.
12 Einer ihrer eigenen Propheten sagte ja: "Die Kreter sind von jeher Lügner, wilde Tiere, faule Bäuche."
One of themselves, a prophet of their own, has said, Cretans are always liars, evil wild beasts, lazy gluttons.
13 Dies Zeugnis ist wahr. Weise sie aus diesem Grunde scharf zurecht, damit sie im Glauben gesund bleiben
This testimony is true; for which cause rebuke them severely, that they may be sound in the faith,
14 und sich nicht auf jüdische Fabeleien einlassen und auf Menschensatzungen, die von der Wahrheit abweichen.
not turning [their] minds to Jewish fables and commandments of men turning away from the truth.
15 Den Reinen ist alles rein; den Unreinen jedoch und Ungläubigen ist nichts rein, ist ihr Verstand und ihr Gewissen doch befleckt.
All things [are] pure to the pure; but to the defiled and unbelieving nothing [is] pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.
16 Sie geben vor, Gott zu kennen, verleugnen ihn jedoch durch Werke. Und so sind sie ein Greuel und ungehorsam, untauglich zu jedem guten Werke.
They profess to know God, but in works deny [him], being abominable, and disobedient, and found worthless as to every good work.
