Roemers 11
1 Ich frage weiter: Hat Gott sein Volk etwa verstoßen? Gewiß nicht. Denn auch ich bin Israelit, aus Abrahams Geschlecht, vom Stamme Benjamin.
But then I ask, “Has God rejected his people?” Of course not! I'm an Israelite myself, from the tribe of Benjamin.
2 Gott hat sein Volk, das er sich auserwählte, nicht verstoßen. Oder wißt ihr denn nicht, was die Schrift in der Geschichte des Elias sagt, als er sich bei Gott über Israel beklagte:
God has not rejected his chosen people. Don't you recall what Scripture says about Elijah? How he complained about Israel to God, saying,
3 "O Herr, sie haben deine Propheten gemordet, Deine Altäre verwüstet; nur ich allein bin übrig, und auch mir trachten sie nach dem Leben."
“Lord they've killed your prophets and destroyed your altars. I'm the only one left, and they're trying to kill me too!”
4 Was sagt ihm dann der Gottesspruch? "Ich habe mir siebentausend Männer aufbewahrt, die ihre Knie vor Baal nicht gebeugt haben."
How did God answer him? “I still have seven thousand left who have not worshiped Baal.”
5 So ist auch in unserer Zeit ein Rest geblieben, den die Gnade sich auserwählt hat.
Today it's just the same: there are still some faithful people left, chosen by God's grace.
6 Hat ihn die Gnade sich auserwählt, dann geschah es nicht auf Grund von Werken; sonst wäre ja die Gnade keine Gnade mehr.
And since it's through grace, then clearly it's not based on what people do, otherwise grace wouldn't be grace!
7 Was nun? Was Israel erstrebte, hat es nicht erreicht. Nur der auserwählte Teil hat es erreicht, die anderen wurden verstockt,
So what do we conclude? That the people of Israel didn't achieve what they were striving for—only the chosen, while the rest became hard-hearted.
8 wie geschrieben steht: "Gott gab ihnen den Geist der Betäubung, Augen, damit sie nicht sehen, und Ohren, damit sie nicht hören bis auf diesen Tag."
As Scripture says, “God dulled their minds so their eyes could not see and their ears could not hear, to this very day.”
9 Und David sagt: "Ihr Tisch soll ihnen zur Schlinge werden, zur Falle, zum Anstoß und zur Vergeltung;
David adds, “May their feasts become a trap for them, a net that catches them, a temptation that brings punishment.
10 ihre Augen sollen finster werden, so daß sie nicht mehr sehen. Für immer beuge ihren Rücken."
May their eyes become blind so they cannot see, and may their backs always be bent low in dejection.”
11 Ich frage nun: Sind sie gestrauchelt, so daß sie nun verloren sind? Gewiß nicht. Vielmehr kam zu den Heiden das Heil erst durch ihr Verderben, um dadurch ihre Eifersucht zu wecken.
So am I saying that they stumbled and consequently failed completely? Not at all! But as a result of their mistakes, salvation came to other nations, to “make them jealous.”
12 Ist aber ihr Verderben für die Welt zum Reichtum und ihr Versagen zum Reichtum für die Heidenwelt geworden, um wieviel mehr dann erst, wenn sie vollzählig werden.
Now if even their failure benefits the world, and their loss profits the foreigners, how much more beneficial it would be if they were to completely fulfill what they were meant to be.
13 Jedoch, ich rede ja zu euch, den Heiden. Soweit ich Apostel für die Heiden bin, will ich meinem Amt Ehre machen.
Now let me speak to you foreigners. Insofar as I'm a missionary to foreigners, I promote what I'm doing
14 Vielleicht kann ich meine Stammesbrüder zur Eifersucht verleiten und dadurch einige aus ihnen retten.
that somehow I might make my people jealous and save some of them.
15 Denn wenn schon ihre Verwerfung Versöhnung für die Welt bedeutet, was mag dann erst die Aufnahme bedeuten? Nichts anderes als ein Leben aus den Toten.
If the result of God's rejection of them is that the world becomes God's friends, the result of God's acceptance of them would be like the dead coming back to life!
16 Denn ist die Erstlingsgabe heilig, dann ist es auch die ganze Masse, und ist die Wurzel heilig, so sind es auch die Zweige.
If the first part of the bread dough given as an offering is holy, then so is all the rest; if the roots of a tree are holy, then so are the branches.
17 Wenn einige der Zweige ausgebrochen wurden, und du, der du ein Wildling bist, zwischen ihnen eingesetzt warst und also Anteil an der Wurzel und dem Saft des Ölbaums bekamst,
Now if some of the branches have been broken off, and you—a wild olive shoot—have been grafted in, and have shared with them the benefit of nourishment from the olive tree's roots,
18 alsdann erhebe dich doch nicht über die Zweige. Wenn du dich rühmen wolltest, so bedenke: Nicht du bist es, der die Wurzel trägt, vielmehr trägt die Wurzel dich.
then you shouldn't look down on the other branches. If you're tempted to boast, remember it's not you who are supporting the roots, but the roots that are supporting you.
19 Du magst nun sagen: "Es mußten aber Zweige ausgebrochen werden, damit ich eingepflanzt würde."
You could make the claim, “Branches were broken off so I could be grafted in.”
20 Gut! Sie wurden wegen ihres Unglaubens ausgebrochen, und du bist deines Glaubens wegen eingepflanzt. So werde also nicht stolz; bleibe vielmehr in der Furcht.
All well and good—but they were broken off because of their failure to trust in God, and you stay there because you trust in God. So don't think highly of yourselves, but be respectful,
21 Wenn Gott schon die gewachsenen Zweige nicht verschont hat, so wird er deiner auch nicht schonen.
because if God didn't spare the original branches, he won't spare you either.
22 Also beachte Gottes Güte wie auch seine Strenge: die Strenge gegen die Verworfenen, die Güte Gottes gegen dich, Solange du seiner Güte treu bleibst. Sonst wirst auch du noch ausgehauen werden.
You should recognize both God's kindness and toughness—he was tough on the fallen, but God is kind to you so long as you trust in his kindness—otherwise you'll be removed too.
23 Jedoch auch jene werden wieder eingepflanzt, wenn sie nicht im Unglauben verharren; denn Gott hat Macht genug, sie wieder einzupflanzen.
If they no longer refuse to trust in God, they can be grafted in as well, for God is able to graft them back in again.
24 Wenn du aus dem gewachsenen Wildling, abgeschnitten und gegen den sonstigen Brauch einem edlen Ölbaum eingepflanzt wurdest, um wie viel leichter können diese, die gewachsenen Zweige, dann ihrem eigenen Baume wieder eingepflanzt werden!
If you could be cut from a wild olive tree, and then be grafted artificially onto a cultivated olive tree, how much more easily they could be grafted back naturally to their own tree.
25 Liebe Brüder! Ich will euch folgendes Geheimnis nicht verbergen, auf daß ihr euch selbst vor euch ja nicht weise dünket: Die Verstocktheit eines Teils von Israel wird nur solange dauern, bis die Vollzahl der Heiden eingetreten ist.
I don't want you, my brothers and sisters to miss this previously-hidden truth, for otherwise you could become conceited. The people of Israel have become hard-hearted in part, until the process of the foreigners coming in is complete.
26 Alsdann wird das gesamte Israel das Heil erlangen, wie geschrieben steht: "Von Sion wird ein Retter kommen; wegschaffen wird er die Gottlosigkeit aus Jakob;
This is how all Israel will be saved. As Scripture says, “The Savior will come from Zion, and he will turn Jacob away from his opposition to God.
27 und dies ist mein Bund mit ihnen, wenn ich ihre Sünden tilge."
My promise to them is that I'll take away their sins.”
28 Im Hinblick auf das Evangelium sind diese euretwegen Feinde, im Hinblick aber auf die Auserwählung um der Väter willen seine Lieblinge.
Though they are enemies of the good news—and this is to your benefit—they are still the chosen people, and loved because of their forefathers.
29 Unwiderruflich sind die Gnadengaben und die Erwählung Gottes.
God's gifts and his calling can't be withdrawn.
30 Wie ihr einst Ungehorsam gegen Gott bewiesen, doch jetzt durch ihren Ungehorsam Erbarmen gefunden habt,
At one time you disobeyed God, but now God has shown you mercy as a result of their disobedience.
31 so sind auch diese jetzt ungehorsam geworden, um durch eben das Erbarmen, das ihr gefunden habt, jetzt auch Erbarmen zu erlangen.
In just the same way that they're now disobedient as you were, they will also be shown mercy like you received.
For God treated everyone as prisoners because of their disobedience so that he could be merciful to everyone. (eleēsē g1653)
33 O Abgründe des Reichtums und der Weisheit und der Einsicht Gottes! Wie unbegreiflich sind seine Gerichte, wie unerforschlich seine Wege!
Oh how deep are God's riches, wisdom, and knowledge! How incredible his decisions, how unimaginable his methods!
34 "Wer erkennt den Ratschluß des Herrn? Oder wer will ihn beraten?
Who can know God's thoughts? Who can give him advice?
35 Oder wer gibt ihm zuerst etwas, so daß er ihm vergelten müßte?"
Who has ever given anything to God that God would be obliged to repay?
