Psalm 8

1 Auf den Siegesspender, ein Kelterlied, ein Lied, von David. Herr, unser Herr! Wie glorreich ist Dein Name auf der ganzen Erde! Wie herrlich ist Dein Ruhm am Himmel!

To the Chief Musician. On "the Gittith." A Melody of David. O Yahweh, our Lord! How majestic is thy Name, in all the earth, Who hast set thy splendour upon the heavens.

2 Aus Kindes- und aus Säuglingsmund hast Du Dir Ruhm geschaffen, zum Trutz den Widersachern Dein, und machst so Feind und Groller stumm. -

Out of the mouth of children and sucklings, hast thou laid a foundation of strength, —because of thine adversaries, to make foe and avenger be still.

3 Betrachte ich den Himmel, Deiner Finger Werk, den Mond, die Sterne, die Du all erschaffen:

When I view thy heavens, the work, of thy fingers, moon and stars, which thou hast established,

4 Was ist der Mensch, daß seiner Du gedenkst? Das Menschenkind, daß sein Du achtest?

What was weak man, that thou shouldst make mention of him? or the son of the earthborn, that thou shouldst set him in charge?

5 Nur wenig hast Du ihn der Gottheit nachgesetzt, mit Glanz und Herrlichkeit gekrönt,

That thou shouldst make him little less than messengers of God, with glory and honour, shouldst crown him?

6 ernennest ihn zum Herrn der Werke Deiner Hände und unterwirfst ihm alles:

Shouldst give him dominion over the works of thy hands, —All things, shouldst have put under his feet:

7 die Schafe und die Rinder all, des Feldes Wild,

Sheep and oxen, all of them, —yea even the beasts of the field;

8 des Himmels Vögel und des Meeres Fische, was sonst noch durch die Meeresstraßen zieht.

The bird of the heavens, and the fishes of the sea, — the passer-by on the paths of the seas?

9 Herr, unser Herr! Wie glorreich ist Dein Name auf der ganzen Erde!

O Yahweh, our Lord! How majestic is thy Name, in all the earth.
