Psalm 40

1 Auf den Siegesspender, von David, ein Lied. Ich hoffe gläubig auf den Herrn; er schenkt mir auch Gehör und hört mein Rufen.

I waited patiently for Adonai. He turned to me, and sh'ma ·heard obeyed· my cry.

2 Er wird mich aus der Mördergrube ziehen, aus Kot und Schlamm, und stellen meinen Fuß auf Felsengrund und meine Schritte sichern.

He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand.

3 Er legt ein neues Lied mir in den Mund ein Lob auf unsern Gott. Das sollen viele hören und sich fürchten und zu dem Herrn Vertrauen fassen.

He has put a new song in my mouth, even tehilah ·praise song· to our God. Many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in Adonai.

4 "Dem Manne Heil, der sein Vertrauen auf den Herrn gesetzt, sich nicht den Frechen beigesellt, die abgefallen sind zum Truge!"

Blessed is the man who makes Adonai his trust, and does not respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.

5 Du tust zahlreiche Wunder, Herr, mein Gott, und Deine Pläne, die Du mit uns hast, - Dir ist nichts gleich - wollt ich sie künden, davon redend, zu viele wären es, sie zu erklären.

Many, Adonai, my God, are the wonderful works which you have done, and your thoughts which are toward us. They can’t be declared back to you. If I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be counted.

6 Du wünschest keine Schlacht- noch Speiseopfer; feinhörig machst Du mich. Du heischest keine Brand- noch Sündenopfer.

Sacrifices and offerings you don’t want; burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin ·missing the goal· you have not required. Instead, you have opened my ears.

7 Drum spreche ich: "Bereit bin ich zu dem, was mir die Buchrolle verzeichnet."

So then I said, “Behold, I have come! In the scroll of a book it is written about me.

8 Mein Gott! Wie gerne tu ich Deinen Willen und trage Dein Gesetz im Herzen.

I delight to do your will, my God. Yes, your Torah ·Teaching· is within my heart.”

9 Verkünden möchte ich das Heil vor zahlreicher Gemeinde; ich täte meinen Lippen keinen Einhalt. Du weißt es, Herr.

I have proclaimed glad news of righteousness in the great assembly. Behold, I will not seal my lips, Adonai, you know.

10 Im Herzen will ich Deine Liebe nicht begraben, von Deiner Treue, Deinem Heile will ich reden und Deine Huld und Treue nicht verhehlen vor der großen Volksgemeinde.

I have not hidden your righteousness within my heart. I have declared your faithfulness and your salvation. I have not concealed your chesed ·loving-kindness· and your truth from the great assembly.

11 So wehre, Herr, auch Du nicht Deiner Güte gegen mich! Mich schütze Deine Huld und Treue immerdar!

Don’t withhold your tender rachamim ·merciful loves· from me, Adonai. Let your chesed ·loving-kindness· and your truth continually preserve me.

12 Denn Leiden ohne Zahl umringen mich; mich treffen meiner Sünden Strafen. Ich kann sie nimmer überblicken; mehr als die Haare meines Hauptes sind es ihrer. So steht mir stille der Verstand.

For innumerable evils have surrounded me. My depravities (moral evils) have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up. They are more than the hairs of my head. My heart has failed me.

13 Herr! Schnell herbei zu meiner Rettung! Zu Hilfe eilends, Herr!

Be pleased, Adonai, to deliver me. Hurry to help me, Adonai.

14 Beschämt und schamrot sollen werden alle, die ernstlich mir nach meinem Leben trachten, mit Schmach die Flucht ergreifen, die mir übelwollen!

Let them be disappointed and confounded together who seek after my soul to destroy it. Let them be turned backward and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt.

15 Erstarren sollen auf der Stelle, die mir entgegenrufen: "Ha!"

Let them be desolate by reason of their shame that tell me, “Aha! Aha!”

16 Doch jubeln sollen über Dich vor Freude alle, die Dich suchen, und allzeit rufen: "Groß der Herr!", die Deinen Sieg sich wünschen!

Let all those who seek you rejoice and be glad in you. Let all who 'ahav ·affectionately love· your salvation say continually, “Let Adonai be exalted and magnified!”

17 Bin ich auch selber arm und elend, der Herr sorgt doch für mich. Du bist mir Rettung und mein Schutz. Mein Gott! Nicht säume.

But I am poor and needy. May 'Adonay [Lord] think about me. You are my help and my deliverer. Don’t delay, my God.
