Psalm 17
1 Ein Gebet, von David. - Gerechte Sache höre, Herr! Mein Flehen merk! Vernimm mein Beten mit den Lippen sonder Trug!
“A prayer of David.” Hear, O Lord, [the cause of] righteousness, attend unto my entreaty, give ear unto my prayer, coming from lips without deceit.
2 Nur Recht ergeht von Deinem Angesicht; untrüglich schauen Deine Augen.
Let from thy presence my sentence come forth; let thy eyes behold what is right.
3 Wenn Du das Herz mir prüftest, in der Nacht es überraschtest und gründlich mich durchforschtest, fändst Du nicht, daß ich gedacht, was meinen Mund nicht überschreiten durfte.
Thou hast proved my heart; thou hast thought of me in the night; thou hast refined me—thou couldst find nothing: my purpose doth not pass beyond [the words of] my mouth.
4 Und bei den Löhnen für die Leute gab ich acht nach Deines Mundes Worten auf den Lebensunterhalt.
Among the deeds of men did I observe, by the word of thy lips, the paths of the dissolute.
5 Und meine Schritte hielten fest an Deinen Gleisen nicht wankten meine Tritte.
My steps held firmly to thy tracks, [and] my footsteps did not slip.
6 So rufe ich zu Dir, daß Du mich, Gott, erhörest! Neige Dein Ohr zu mir! Auf meine Rede höre!
I call on thee, for thou wilt answer me, O God: incline thy ear unto me, hear my speech.
7 Erzeige Deine Wundergüte, Retter derer, die vor ihren Widersachern bei Deiner Rechten Zuflucht suchen!
Show marvelously thy loving-kindnesses, O thou that savest those who put their trust [in thee] from those that rise up [against them] by thy right hand.
8 Dem Augensterne gleich behüte mich! Verbirg mich in dem Schatten Deiner Flügel
Keep me as the apple of the eye; conceal me under the shadow of thy wings,
9 vor Frevlern, die mich überfallen, vor meinen Feinden, die mich voller Gier bedrängen!
From the wicked that despoil me, my enemies, who, to take my life, compass me about.
10 Fühllos verschließen sie ihr Herz; im Übermute spricht ihr Mund.
They are enclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly.
11 Sie stürzen sich auf mich, umringen mich; zu Boden senken sie die Augen. -
On our steps they now encompass us: they direct their eyes to turn aside in the land.
12 Er gleicht dem Löwen, der auf Beute lauert, dem Jungleu im Verstecke.
Every man is just like a lion that is greedy to tear his prey, and like a young lion lurking in a covert.
13 Auf, Herr! Tritt ihm entgegen! Wirf ihn nieder! Errette mich vor Bösewichten durch Dein Schwert,
Arise, O Lord, prevent him, cast him down; deliver my soul from the wicked, who is thy sword, —
14 vor Leuten, Herr, durch Deine Hand, vor Leuten, deren Teil im Leben nur die Welt, ja, durch Dein Schwert vor solchen, die ein Schlemmerleben führen, und die samt ihren Kindern voll gesättigt sind, und die, was übrigbleibt, den Enkeln hinterlassen können!
From these men—thy hand—O Lord, from the men of this world, whose portion is in this life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy hidden treasure: they have children in plenty, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes.
15 Ich aber schaue durch Gerechtigkeit Dein Angesicht und labe mich an Deinem Anblick voll Begier.
As for me, in righteousness shall I behold thy face: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with contemplating thy likeness.
