Psalm 107
1 "Dem Herrn sagt Dank! Denn er ist gut. Auf ewig währet seine Huld."
Give thanks to the Lord for his goodness for his kindness endures forever.
2 So singen die vom Herrn Erlösten, die er aus Feindes Hand befreit
Let this be the song of the ransomed, whom the Lord has redeemed from distress,
3 und aus den Ländern sammelt von Morgen, Abend, Mitternacht und Süden. -
gathering them from all lands, east, west, north, and south.
4 Sie irren in der Steppenwüste und finden keine Bahn zur Wohnstatt hin.
In the wastes of the desert some wandered, finding no way to a city inhabited.
5 Sie leiden Durst und Hunger, und ihre Seele sinkt darob in Ohnmacht.
Full of hunger and thirst, their spirit failed.
6 Sie schreien zu dem Herrn in ihrer Not; Er rettet sie aus ihren Ängsten
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distresses,
7 und leitet sie auf rechtem Wege, die Wohnstatt zu erreichen.
guiding them straight on the way, till they reached an inhabited city.
8 Sie sollen dankbar sein dem Herrn für seine Gnade, für seine Wunder an den Menschenkindern,
Let them thank the Lord for his kindness, for his wonderful deeds for people;
9 daß er ihr Lechzen stillt und ihren Hunger mit dem Nötigen befriedigt! -
for the thirsty he satisfies, and the hungry he fills with good things.
10 In Finsternis und Todesschatten sitzen sie, gebannt in Elend und in Eisen;
Some sat in darkness and gloom prisoners in irons and misery,
11 denn Gottes Worten widerspenstig, verschmähen sie des Höchsten Rat.
for rebelling against God’s word, and spurning the Most High’s counsel.
12 Durch Mühsal beugt er ihren Sinn; sie werden machtlos; niemand hilft.
Their heart was bowed with toil; there was no one to help when they stumbled.
13 Sie schrein zum Herrn in ihrer Not; er rettet sie aus ihren Ängsten.
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distresses.
14 Aus Finsternis und Todesschatten führt er sie, und ihre Fesseln sprengt er auf.
Out of darkness and gloom he brought them, and burst their chains.
15 Sie sollen dankbar sein dem Herrn für seine Gnade, für seine Wunder an den Menschenkindern,
Let them praise the Lord for his kindness, for his wonderful deeds for people.
16 daß er zertrümmert eherne Pforten und Eisenriegel bricht! -
For he shattered the gates of bronze, and broke bars of iron.
17 Die Kranken leiden schwer ob ihres Sündenwandels und wegen ihrer Missetaten,
Some were sick from their wicked ways, and suffering because of their sins.
18 daß sie vor jeder Speise ekelt und sie des Todes Pforten schon berühren.
All manner of food they hated; they had come to the gates of death.
19 Sie schreien zu dem Herrn in ihrer Not; er rettet sie aus ihren Ängsten.
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distresses.
20 Er schickt sein Wort, macht sie gesund und rettet sie vor ihren Grüften.
He sent his word and healed them, and delivered their life from the pit.
21 Sie sollen dankbar sein dem Herrn für seine Gnade, für seine Wunder an den Menschenkindern,
Let them praise the Lord for his kindness, for his wonderful deeds for people.
22 ihm Dankesopfer bringen, jubelnd seine Taten künden! -
Let them offer to him thankofferings, and with joy tell what things he has done.
23 Die auf der See in Schiffen fahren und ihr Geschäft auf großen Wassern treiben,
Some crossed the sea in ships, doing business in great waters.
24 erblicken hier des Herren Werke und seine Wunder mit der tiefen Flut.
They have seen what the Lord can do, and his wonderful deeds on the deep.
25 Ein Sturm erhebt sich auf sein Wort, und seine Wellen türmen sich.
At his command rose a tempest, which lifted the waves on high.
26 Sie steigen bis zum Himmel, fahren in die Tiefen. Ihr Leben ist gefährdet.
Up to heaven they went, down to the depths; their courage failed them.
27 Sie tanzen, schwanken wie Betrunkene. Dahin ist ihre ganze Kunst.
They staggered and reeled like drunkards; all their skills useless.
28 Sie schrein zum Herrn in ihrer Not; er rettet sie aus ihren Ängsten.
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distresses.
29 Er macht den Sturm zum Säuselwind; da legen sich des Meeres Wellen.
He stilled the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed.
30 Sie jubeln, daß sie stille liegen und er sie an ihr Endziel führt.
They were glad, because it was quiet; they were led to the haven they longed for.
31 Sie sollen dankbar sein dem Herrn für seine Gnade, für seine Wunder an den Menschenkindern
Let them praise the Lord, for his kindness, for his wonderful deeds for people.
32 und ihn vor allem Volk erheben und ihn im Kreis der Alten loben! -
Where the people assemble, extol him, and praise him in council of elders.
33 Er macht zur Wüste Ströme, zu dürrem Lande Quellenorte,
He turns streams into a wilderness, springs of water into thirsty land,
34 ein fruchtbar Land zum salzigen Grund, der Bosheit der Bewohner wegen.
fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the sin of the people.
35 Er macht zum Wasserteich die Wüste und dürres Land zum Quellenort;
A desert he makes pools of water, a land of drought into springs of water.
36 die Hungrigen läßt er hier wohnen; Sie bauen eine Wohnstatt dort,
He settles the hungry therein, they establish a city to live in.
37 besäen Felder, pflanzen Weinberge, die lohnend Früchte tragen.
They sow fields and plant vineyards, which furnish a fruitful yield.
38 Er segnet sie, daß sie sich riesig mehren, und läßt ihr Vieh sich nicht vermindern.
By his blessing they multiply greatly, and he lets not their cattle decrease.
39 Vermindern sie sich, werden sie gebeugt von Druck und Elend und von Jammer,
Yet when they are bowed and diminished by oppression, misfortune, or sorrow,
40 dann gießt auf Fürsten er Verachtung aus und führt sie in die unwegsame Öde.
he pours contempt upon princes, and on trackless wastes leads them astray
41 Doch aus dem Elend hebt er Arme auf und macht Geschlechter Herden gleich.
He lifts the poor out of misery, and makes families fruitful as flocks.
42 Das sehen Redliche und freuen sich, und jeder Frevelmund verstummt. -
At this sight shall the upright be glad, and all wicked mouths shall be stopped.
43 Wer weise ist, beachtet dies, und Anerkennung finden so des Herren Gnadentaten.
Let those who are wise observe this, and consider the love of the Lord
